The Paxman VP185 is a 12 or 18 cylinder engine. Development cost around 15 million pounds. Development started late 1987, the 12 cylinder version was offered on market in 1993 and the 18 cylinder version in 1998. 6 turbochargers as standard, all joined in a common inlet box - on later models three chargers per box covering 6 cylinders each to accomodate the 18 cylinder version aswell. On some of the engines, it is still possible to attach a ball governor to it if the digital one fails :)
@@sylviaelse5086 If you've not already found the answer to this, an IRV (Integrated Relay Valve) is fitted to the starter, the valve stays shut until the SDV is closed and this has to be manually reset which would then prime the IRV ready for next start up.
Yes MTU engines are quieter; they were fitted to the IC125. MTU of Germany now part of Rolls-Royce. I understand that the characteristic knock is subdued when the fuel is `stuttered' into the cylinder as per VW TDI.
