I watched this when it first came out and went down to my local dog track with my mates, my dog won and told my mates that i lost so they all looked at me wondering how come i got paid out. Explained to them this trick and watched them all make idiots of themselves trying to convince the cashier that there loosing ticket was actually a winning one.

Derren doesn't cheat, so theres two explainations. 1. The slap on the window and his subliminal messages are enough to put the tellers into a state of panic, which convinces them it is the winning ticket and they've just made a mistake. They are no longer thinking rationally, and in their panicked state pay the ticket out manually. 2. The same as the above, however Derren had some interaction with the tellers beforehand, where he created a trigger point (the slap on the window)

I have a theory on how this is done but it is too long to explain in a comment. I'll try to summarize a few of the important steps: 1: Create rapport during a long period with the persons behind the counter, both directly and indirectly. Make them very easy to lead. Choose your "victim" carefully, as you need to lead them very strongly. The rapport need to be strong enough to almost be classified as hypnotism. 2: Anchor winning tickets with slam of the palm on the booth and a phrase. "This is the dog your looking for". This requires you playing the game several times to anchor this strongly. Winning tickets from you will be delivered with this phrase and behavior many times to make it feel "standard" for winning. For you to be remembered you need to stand out, with the earlier level of rapport and maybe even some moments where you shared something you have in common. 3: Use these techniques and other techniques as a distraction, so that you can anchor the feeling of a winning ticket when it is read. If attention is directed elsewhere, try to regain focus on you and make them distracted enough to not reflect further. The trick is to make them "feel" that the tickets is a winning ticket when it is read and at the critical moments. Timing is essential. Distractions needs to be applied as soon as there is any doubt or other behaviors that is unwanted. Is this a theory? Yes. Is it much more complicated? Yes. Could I go on about this for a lot longer? Yes. Is a youtube-comment a place to do it? Probably not.

Reading these comments make me smile! This is one of Derren's first televised shows, if not the very first one if it's from Mind Control 1. Look at the cashiers face. She's smirking. Shy people who are being filmed, and know somethings happening in advance smirk when they know now is the time they're being filmed. She can't stop smirking the whole way through. Clearly, Channel 4 pre arranged this. They contacted the dog track and asked them if they'd be up for it. They agreed because it's free advertising for them. Derren Brown makes some amazing stuff, but this was simply pre arranged while he was building up his rep.

Tickets have to be scanned on a barcode reader before any money can be paid out. Don’t get me wrong, I love Derren and have seen him live 6 times now with my Dad and he’s incredible! But this cannot be real.

The only explanation that I can think is that the two cashiers that paid out were not stooges but the cash machine was tampered with (with the dog track owners consent of course) so that when a ticket is scanned again it would pay out as if it had won. It is not possible that there was some sort of hypnosis involved as the computer scans the barcode and pays out accordingly, derren may be able to hypnotise people but he can't deceive a barcode scanner.

If this is real, then there must be a bit more to it which we didn't see (like pre-hypnosis of the staff there). Extremely unlikely that someone else could get paid on a losing ticket, even if they did exactly what Derren did here.

This actually works. Just cashed in one of thoes really long fucking scratch cards that take 10 minutes to check and there was a massive line and she scanned it in the machine and she said it was a loser. I told her to do it again and then i told her to check it and i said i had one a tenner and she just gave me the money

1 - reset the lady by banging on the window (fight or flight) 2 - Use NLP and subliminals (This is the dog you've been looking "four" ; 3 "that's why we came to this "win-though" holding up 4 finger... I guess it works on some people. ... Works even better at horse races, when you say this is the dog you've been looking "four".... a kind mind will correct the error and think, no idiot, it's Horse Number 4 , but you did win-though --- (That's where the number is imprinted by the target) It's fun but works only on 5% of the population. Note that it must be dog/horse/ #4 that wins for this trick to work.

I work in a betting shops and struggle to believe this, maybe just maybe could work on a very small percentage of employees, back to the times of Manuel betting, yeah probably a lot more possible but with the computers this would be nipped in the bud very quickly, What I'm struggling to understand is how he won 109 on a £10 single. He can't have done £5 each way, no body does each way on dogs and its pretty pointless, each way wont even cover the win bet. So on that single he won 99 and return his stake of a tenner, that's 99/10 which odds like that don't exist. Added to that, each way betting on dogs is 1/4 price for 1st, 2nd or 3rd, you haven't got any odds that would equal a £5 each way single to have £109 return. They'd have to be some pence included, 109 return is impossible

I work In a bookies and this would not happen... If you disputed the bet the bet would be checked and if it says trap 3 on your ticket but your subliminally saying trap 4 winner... I.. As the bookie would say "no sorry your bet lost as you chose trap 3" so no matter how you tried to convince the bookie, you have your selection on your slip so this would never happen! 🤔🙈... There are some of Derren's segments where it's easy to see a level of NLP and trickery involved... but this one seems like one where he's hypnotized the cashiers beforehand, which is what some claim he does with many of his tricks. Hence the bang on the window and trigger words. All he had to do was set them off. They even went against what the machine prompted them to do. And no doubt he hypnotized them to forget his face.

The two people being followed around by giant cameras are certainly not making a show. Just FYI places like this HAVE to know why you are bringing in a camera crew.

So in case anyone is looking for the most likely way to do this illusion, get a bet for each dog to win, use sleight of hand to swap the losing ticket for the winning ticket, and that is the trick. Saying all the words is a distraction making you think it is the actual solution.

You don't even need a ticket. You can just give her a shipping list or a playing card or something.

Problem is that at the end of the day her till will be down, and she may get in trouble or have to pay back the money herself. Which I would imagine is why he said it isn't entirely fair.
