PayPal Phishing Scams are Getting Worse 

This actually happened to me last week. I’m pretty aware of scams and I was mostly sure it was fake but the fact it came from an official PayPal email worried me enough to spend 20 mins to investigate. I thought someone possibly hacked my account. They even embed a fake PayPal support phone number in the message. Luckily I picked up on that and called the official support where they told me there was no activity on my account. Probably tricked a good amount of people. Very clever.

Winning move is to just ignore any mystery internet bills you aren't sure of. If the one sending the bill is legit, you will eventually actually get a paper bill sent to you. No one's life is getting financially ruined over some missed email. Before any legal action begins against you, there for sure will be tons of attempts to make you aware of it going on.

The trick is that i never pay any of my invoices

The best solution is to have your life together at least enough to know who you do and don’t owe money to. Then, when the scam email comes in, you know you don’t owe a damn to whoever is invoicing you.

Man, I have to wonder... These people are getting better and better at scamming people out of thousands. Meanwhile, there is zero resistance from investigative forces, too busy hunting wrongthink. I have to wonder if I'm in the wrong business these days.

After a bad experience trying to get my money back from Paypal after a ebay sale gone wrong, I prefer to just avoid Paypal as much as possible anyways. Back then they took a “the customer is always right” approach, and Paypal should be very liable in this case, but somehow, just somehow I suspect they’re just not going to be all that helpful to anyone that does get ripped off.

Yep, just happened to me today! They wanted my banking info and I wouldn't give it. They actually ended by hanging up on ME!!!!! They were rude, nasty, and had Chinese accents.

I got an email like this the other day. The only reason I knew it was a scam is because I don't even have PayPal and they didn't address me by my name. And the "person" that "sent me money" had a VERY generic name.

I know this is 10 months old but it happened to me the other day and i almost gave them complete control over my phone. Thank fuck i knew about scammers before hand.

Not sure what I'm more disappointed by, the scammers getting better or PayPal not giving a shit when their system gets abused in their favor (fees)...

I actually heard someone mention getting an invoice from somewhere and weren't sure what it was, they never ordered anything recently. Now this video comes up, and I immediately linked it to them. I hope it was just a scam attempt and they didn't actually pay anything. Thanks for covering this!

I always ignore bills and flag them as phishing. I don’t use PayPal often so until I do, I flag all as scams

My first response would be to call the legit Paypal customer support hotline. But having dealt with them a few times, I'd almost rather deal with the scammers.😄

I got one of these a couple years ago, it was obvious once I looked up the invoice on PayPal and the name was in Cyrillic. Don't worry, ill still see my Linux ISOs for you comrades.

Almost got by one. It was in French and about a due payment for a VPN subscription. Immediately jumped to the PayPal website and verified it was fake, but a good scare!

Never call a number you got from a suspicious mail, always go to the website and get the number that way!

I actually got a fake paypal email years ago. Thankfully it was just a link to a youtube video. This is inexcusable that companies are getting hacked this often

They are at it again. In Australia sms the old paypal refund scam - A$1499 sent to R.G.V. with a 2019 date for this mystery transaction LOL

FINALLY someone acknowledges this! This happened to me a couple years ago. It pretended to be from PayPal and talked about how I needed to pay $5 to lift the limit on my account. Ironically, when I logged in, my account TRULY WAS limited because I hadn't checked the account or the email associated with it for a bit so I was "past due" on the invoice payment or whatever. I didn't click anything in the email, but when I logged in and saw there really was a problem, I panicked, I payed it. I did try to stay cool but no one was replying to me at that hour so the urgency got to me. After, I got tipped off when the way it was listed in my bank transaction was written a bit weird. I never found a way to cancel the invoice, and disputing it later resulted in PayPal finding nothing wrong. I froze my linked credit card and I almost did a chargeback through my bank, but knowing how banhammery PayPal is, I knew I'd probably lose my account so I just ate my loss. I'm lucky it was just $5, but it's scary that anyone can just limit your account or slurp money from you because, for some reason, you can't cancel invoices that are randomly sent to you. Edit, Upon watching again this again I may actually still be all alone in the type of scam I experienced, lmao. Mine wasn't from links, it was just a legit invoice from a nonlegit entity that I was forced to pay because paypal is easily exploitable.

The obvious answer to this is to just never click on buttons in an email. If it is important, just go to the website manually on your browser and check what is going on. Though understandably there are a lot of people that just click on the links because convenience.

If only we could teach people to stop falling for this crap then we wouldn't have to deal with it on this scale, unfortunately if that worked alot of things in this world never would of gotten this bad.

My business has a lot of sketchy folks that rip people off. I help people when I can (I've only got one good arm now) and tell people when shops are trying to take them for a ride. My question is why would ANYBODY use a 3rd party like PayPal to pay ANYBODY ANYTHING? Unless I can pay for something DIRECTLY, I'm not going that route! PLUS, PayPal wants YOU to pay THEM a monthly fee for the PRIVILEGE of having THEM make a payment FOR YOU! How in the world does that make ANY SENSE AT ALL!

How the f would they be able to do this through the actual paypal website? You'd think paypal would have that prevented decades ago.

Sometimes I click on them just to enter fake login information.

If you want to give people advice on it, I would advise not to click any links in the email. Got an email from Paypal to pay something; just open the Paypal site. It is barely an inconvenience but helps to avoid a lot. I even got my email client configured to remove hyperlinks, so I cannot get accidentally stupid

You know I hear everyone saying well it’s obvious come on???!! Well here is the problem I do hospice and the lady’s and gentleman that I take care of are dying so they don’t want to leave family with anything that needs to be taken care of and they are elderly so this is all new to them! It saddens me that people are so cruel and think it’s okay to tell ppl “well duh” please understand that maybe you think it’s obvious but not everyone does so I my self an grateful when someone takes the time to educate me or my clients on phishing scams!! I keep getting annoying scam emails like these, and my email is full of annoying crypto scams. At this point, I just wanna leave the internet and go off grid. It's just so annoying how these assholes keep getting through, and yet when I try to create a legitimate email server, it takes a tremendous amount of effort.

This is also a reason why I always go another extra step to login first to PayPal before aby bills from PP I get via e-mail

I got one of these claiming I owed about $600 for a smart phone I "bought". I never use Paypal's shitty anti-user service and don't have any money on it so I just ignored it.

Its pretty easy, if you click the "pay now" link and it brings you to what looks like paypal, but lastpass isn't able to autofill for you, then its a scam and you need to leave that website immediately.

I got 2 of these very emails (literally just today and yesterday) and I must say I was almost convinced of its legitimacy (but then I realized the phone # was fake and the English wasn't too great and wording not very professional, so I didn't even bother investigating any further). I usually examine the "from" field very well however and it appeared 100% legit (I didn't look into the "raw" email contents however). I examine the full, actual urls of links before clicking them as well of course (right-click then "Copy Link"). I use Apple mail and have also turned off automatic loading of images/external resources in the settings. Edit: oh wow it is a legitimate PayPal email so there you go

I have seen a PayPal phishing scam that looked pretty legit. I also didn't use PayPal for a few months and it was an email saying my account was going to expire which sent me to a real looking login page. I picked up it was fake, but I did a little research and entered in fake info which promoted me to another page that basically made me fill out a forum with ssn, dob, mothers maiden name and more with a mock PayPal loading circle each time clicking next.

Oh fuck I got this in my inbox and assumed it was spam because it wasn't in the email i use paypal with and because such a charge would of been noticed by my mom who's my ssi payee, glad i binned it.

I sold a PS5 and I had to pay business fee for $500 and another fee for whatever fee it was for another $500 and no I have to pay $300 for a Vat fee and I'll get around $2,350 back. I never gotten these emails or invoice. Mines was way different. It still looks legit but I'm promised more money for paying fee of the package and the product.

They are using everything now like PayPal, QuickBooks, Amazon, Facebook and even RU-vid is disgusting

I've actually seen a lot of companies email addresses being mimicked this way but I've never really figured out how they do it because it can allow scammers out there to simply gather information on non-financial websites as well

I dumped Pay Pal over a dozen years ago so no worries about me owing them money.

Been getting calls and emails about an iPhone (lul) that "I bought". I ignore the emails and when I get them on the phone I ask them about my Best Buy Geek Squad refund after they explain the iPhone stuff. They hang up too quickly.

THIS is exactly why anytime I ever go to a website I manually type it in even if it says exactly what website I'm on and it's correct

I've had one of these that actually did use my name, about two months ago. Looked completely legit. I've never heard of the company that did the invoice, so I canceled it. PayPal's invoice canceling is an absolute mess, btw. You can eventually do it, but only from the desktop site, and it's very difficult to figure out how to. I can't remember and I've done it once.

This is actually a scary, i definitely could see myself get tricked by this, the fact that this comes from the official PayPal email is scary
