I love that Ozio shot a 279 and was rooting for Aulby to beat him and get that 300. He was even the first person to run up to him with his hands up in the air smiling. Instead of moping and being pissed off, he was happy for him and you can tell. This was when bowling was bowling. Love watching this match.
David Ozio showed incredible sportsmanship, what a difference 1 spare can make, Ozio saw that Aulby was the better man and gave him a high five after the winning throw, and after the 300 was the first to congratulate him, awesome!!
As a fellow left-hander, Mike Aulby was my idol. Total class by Ozio when you're one strike from perfection and still lose. Aulby's perfect game was so dominant. Every single shot was a solid pocket shot.
Wow! I'm the first comment! I remember watching this on TV! One of the most epic bowling battles in PBA HISTORY!! I also love how David Ozio shows such great sportsmanship! The strike winning shot was followed by a high five inniated immediately by David to Mike Aulby. Then Dave cheered him on to the 300 game! Only 1 strike separated their scores. Incredible!!! The only thing better? A 300 to 300 tie then a roll off! Still so epic! Thanks for posting this great video!!!!!!!
man this final match was awesome, david put in a great fight almost getting a 7-10 on the 8th frame, but mike man, that was great, you can never see a match like this again, maybe in the future.
To the Younger Bowlers out there. Pay attention to Bowlers like Mike Aulby, Earl Anthony( RIP), Mark Roth( RIP). Brin Voss, Dick Weber( RIP), Steve Cook, John Gant, David Ozio,Joe Berardi , Lisa Wagner. One of the Greatest Female Bowlers in the History of Bowling.
Favorable scoring conditions to be sure, but both of these guys were rock solid, technically savvy players. Ozio showed a lot of class in high-fiving Aulby when he knew he was beaten. When you shoot 279 and lose, you can't really be too upset. The only thing that decided this match was carry.
Always felt like David Ozio should have e been a breakfast ceral... "Did you eat your Ozio's today?" Sweet whole grain bowling balls with marshmallow pins!! Part of a balanced breakfast.
2nd straight clip with a 300 game in the championship match. When did the PBA reduce the prize money for a perfect 300 game from 100 grand to 10 thousand dollars? It had been 5 years since the last 300 game had been thrown on TV.
Bowling has a way of leveling things out. Ozio also had a trip 4-9 that could have been a split. Funny how you can throw a bad shot and get a great break sometimes...and other times, you throw a great shot and get a bad break, like that near 7-10 that really should have been a strike.
If I remember correctly, I believe that Brunswick gave him $100K because of the shirt/ball combination 300 game. Happened to Gene Stus the year prior on the Senior Tour. And then with Brian Davis' 299 game that he had a chance for the $100K..
Aulby’s ball gets to the line a perfect microsecond later than his foot and I’m guessing he gets a pleasant little tug on the fingers when he launches it. Ozio is the perfect statesman for the PBA in his honest enthusiasm for Aulby’s perfect game, as well he should be-it’s good for business. Besides, who would be angry to see a guy beat the terrorist lanes man and his oiling toy?
This is a very good game, but I can't quite tell if or even when he got his lucky pin carry, but it felt like maybe one or two of those strikes were just a little left of target, in particular around 3:13
I remember watching this back in the day when I was 6 years old. I was blown away. I hope we can see a 300-300 tie some day. This is about as close as it's ever come. David Ozio got robbed on the shot he missed, too.
Nearly happened twice because at the 1996 flagship open Bob Learn shot 300 to Johnny Petraglia's 279. Learn would go on to set the all-time four game record which still stands today.
