I never realised until recently how scary, and specially, how surreal PoP2 was. It had: a magic carpet, skeleton swordmen, lava pools, deep pits with spikes on the bottom, flying fleshless heads, deadly venomous snakes, bissecting blades traps, swordmen wearing bird heads, a giant spider that worked as a platform, chess pieces with human heads on top of them, a final boss arena with a complete mindscrewing perspective and a final scene where a creepy witch watched Prince and the Princess riding a flying horse on her crystal ball. Damn! And on top of that, a rather spooky soundtrack with Arabic/Persian motifs that scared me as a kid. For a platform adventure game, it sure had a good deal of horror elements in it, that's one of the reasons I love this game so much, Jordan Mechner is friggin genius.
@@ankur9254 The witch was supposed to have a more bigger role in it and was supposed to replace Jaffar as the antagonist. However it was scrapped for unknown reasons.
no, back in those days, you had to buy PC GAME magazines, in hopes someone makes a note with walkthroughs or tips..........I didn't heard of someone doing it with Prince of Persia (thou they did mention the prince megahit cheat codes), and I think in some they mention vagely some tips to go through some levels, but not specific points like the multiple ways of turning into a ghost, etc.... but for example, in one magazine, I got the FULL maps of Blues Brothers game, full A2 poster..........also, it wasn't like today, that games were solved in 3hs (if you skip the 8hs of cutscenes).....a graphic adventure like Monkey Island 2 could take you MONTHS to finish.......you had to share all your info with school mates, to see where they were at the moment,
That's why I never finished Prince of Persia 1 or 2 - I had hard time getting past level 1 actually :) and since there was time limit of 60 minutes I was thinking it have 6 or maybe 8 levels. When later I learned it has 12(!) I stopped trying..
Well.....it was a way for them to sell more copies. And they never published solutions of new games, but rather of at least 1 year old games. They focused more on show new games and tech, since there is were developers and publishing companies give them the $$$. Even if this sounds like they made their ratings depending on how much they got paid, back then a magazine had a name for themselves and they took this way above any publisher (unlike today that any stupid youtuber says whatever they get paid to by companies, in order to promote their crap of games).
same here, ditto the soundtrack ! not only it always dynamically fits the pacing and action taking place at a given moment on screen (something extremely rare at the time in gaming) but we can almost feel the frenetic hits of the Tombak and Santur reverberating everywhere around you. This game gains even more immersive depth if played with powerful contemporary sound systems with good bass. Try it, you'll see what I mean rafigh !
I had a bottle of whiskey which i was planning to drink while watching a good movie but hell i stumbled upon this video and almost shed tears of nostalgia. I remember the days when i was too young to play games like these and was watching my uncle playing this game on his ms dos pc like 20 years ago... Damn time goes by too fast.
Önder Ceyhan me too man. Playing this on my uncles pc. Didn’t even know it was prince of Persia back then. Just remember this game. Nostalgic. Memories.
The cutscene where the ruined castle shifts into the past when it was still standing, the ghost/memory of Prince's mother asking him to avenge his parents and finally him picking up his father's sword always gives me goosebumps.
"Don't hurt him! he's just a poor mad beggar" She says looking at him like he was a stain on the carpet left by a dog. Wow Prince, You definitely picked a good person to spend your life with.
Well, notice that the narrator only mentioned how beautiful the princess was, without saying anything about her virtue as a person with things like mercy or kindness.... :P
The nostalgia to this game is so strong, not because I liked the game, but because this game was my moms favourite, and the time she played that, was one of the very rare times I could see her happy and excited before she passed away from lung cancer Watching this video, I could remember every funny comment she made on the mobs, and the sceneries, and when I used to joke and make fun of her when she was defeated or fall or got stuck, she would call me with her smily and sarcastic face "!!تعال نططني ولا" which can roughly translates to "yo, come help me with that jump!!" We never finished the game, that was back in 1999 and 2000 Thank you so much for uploading this, it brought to me precious beautiful memories from my childhood with my mom.
I played this when I was about 5 years old and I didn't speak English. This is the first time seeing what the hell it meant. I used to guess the symbol :D
From what I've heard, originally the beach puzzle before you enter the cave was going to be the copy protection room. Presumably it be the same puzzle but all five rocks would have symbols on them instead of just four being blank.
@@OrangeOwl1000 I remember I played without guessing the symbol and eventually got stucked in the magic carpet level. The ceiling would stay closed, resulting in the prince smashing against it.
As a kid, I never made it past the temple ruins, and reaching them was already a big achievement to me. 15 years later I decided to give the game another shot, since it held so many good memories ; ims I made it to the bird temple, second level (there's a jump at the beginning I could never get right, and I got bored after a while and moved on). I can't remember how many times I died trying to memorize all the jumps to get to the magic horse. And that was with a cheat to disable the time limit, as I'm really not a fan of this mechanic. You people saying you actually and legitimately beat the game as kids are amazing.
the freaking flying heads are insane. They deal 3 damage if you miss a sword hit. That's way too punishing. And then you have to restart the game every time you lose its so crazy. This was the super meatboy of the 1990s
@@elmariachi5133 I did not speak English back when I played this so I got stuck at this part. Found a couple of hidden tricks though. For example if you had enough health, you could commit a suicide and turn into a shadow by repeatedly turning left and right, I never knew what the point was but it was cool.
Also the times were sometimes the way ahead was hidden in some convoluted way which would be imposible formthe player to discover unless they either bought the guides or go pixel hunting.
I played and finished the game when I was 6! The scariest thing about this game for me at that time was the BLADE TRAP! HOLY SHIT when that came to me the first time! I didn't play this game for a week or so!
I assume the birdmen live in this temple with all the traps, but for some reason they don't seem to pay much attention to them. And my favorite one of all is the guy at 1:06:45 who is so anxious to duel you and then so outraged that you ignored him that he just kills himself.
I know it was confirmed otherwise, but I choose to believe she is Jaffar’s mother. She resurrected her son the first and was furious when she found out the prince scattered her son’s ashes making it difficult to resurrect him for the second time, so she decided to avenge her son herself.
49:10 epic moment.. It took me like 1 week to understand that puzzle.. It was too long and i wasn't able tp finish this game today after all these years i have seen how it ended.. Sitting on that horse that's the last thing i remember about this game..
I finished this game when I was 10 years old. Those who realize how difficult Prince is, will understand.. Im proud of myself. Just me and the game, and angry parents .) No walkthru, nothing like that. All you had was the box with a game and your 386 I guess :)
When I was a kid, I could’t pass that red eagle castle and got stuck at the blue fire stage having no idea how to get the blue fire and I couldn’t understand the sign on the wall. There wasn’t any tutorial and RU-vid back then. If you get stuck you’re stuck and you can’t ask anyone.
@@Ben-rc9br Hi :) As a kid, over 20 years ago, my dad was playing for the most part, so I sort of learned the game by watching him. So when I beat it when I was about 17, it felt easier because I had had some second-hand experience. But I don't think I would have been able to beat it then!
What a hard but addicting game this was back then! I remember getting squished in the gate with the flying carpet the first time. Also when doing a running jump in the red temple and not noticing the slicing blades, ended up split in half. They should make a new one with the similar gory traps and consequences!
Apparently the Prince didn't take any life extension bottles in the 1st PoP, because now in PoP 2 he is back to 3 life points. Maybe he lost all the extra life points in just 11 days? Or maybe the cold shadow, which passed by the Prince before he entered the throne chamber It also seems tha 12 life points is the maximum points
Good memories from this game, I also played the previous. Those heads gave me nightmares as a teen. This game is better than many of the movies made today
46:44 i never ever gone further. I remember running in this damn desert and trying to click randomly around the horse statue to maybe unlock a secret door... i also asked help to my friends at sxhool but, back in this days, i was the only one playing videogames. So yeah, i've quitted and never finished this masterpiece
@@llSuperSnivyll It wasn’t. You had to punch the tile yourself for it to fall down. I checked just now because I was worried I didn’t know about some feature of the game while having every room memorized. Also, the solution isn’t obvious, because technically you could knock down the tile in advance by running over it.
@@sridrawings4510 The 2003 video game called Sands of Time was when Reboot happend, which takes place in Ancient Persian Empire. Prince of Persia before that in video games was medieval Persia basically.
23:03 Many years ago, I had this weird image inside my head of a battle with a skeleton on a bridge. Then I found out that was one of my very early childhood memories of a videogame when I played Prince of Persia 2 with my father during the 90's.
"all these squares make a circle... all these squares make a circle.... all these squares make a circle ... all these squares make a circle..." Mr. Popo , TFS DBZA
The graphics were simple but yet we had so much fun playing it at the time. I'd spent many nights until the wee hours playing Prince of Persia 1 and 2! Brings back lots of nice memories from my college days! I hate to fight against Madusa.
So was this ending a pre-cursor to a planned third game? What's with the witch and the S-sign on her forehead that's seen throughout the game? This is arguably the best game ever made, along with the most obnoxiously difficult and filled with cheap deaths. It's beautiful, engaging, mysterious, scary, long and amazing. I played it a lot on DOS and if it were out for the Genesis, I would've played it alot on it too...
@@janussciencegaming Kinda sad that the actual third Prince of Persia game of the original trilogy never came into fruition. Continuing after The Shadow of the Flame left off, we could see the Prince facing off the Army of Darkness and the old witch, who will be the final boss of the game. Jaffar would return in PoP3 (not Prince of Persia 3D) as a phantom and the mid-boss. The Prince would probably gain new weapons like several new swords and the he can also use a bow and arrow. He will also learn new spells, most are elemental spells for offense and defense, while another spell will be a healing spell that can only use three or five times for each level. There will new levels and they are different, as instead of traveling the whole country, he will travel around the world to find the artifacts to destroy the witch for good. Also, there will be new playable characters along the way as the Prince will meet them during his travels. The Prince will have 80 days to travel the world and returning back home while he brings his allies there. But the actual gameplay itself lasted 3 hours but must complete it less than 3 hours. Somebody should make a KickStarter for PoP 3.
@@Isaac-gh5ku bows were historically inaccurate for the time. Even in the begining of the game, after you jump of the window and jump to the right of the balcony you see a guard holding a sword. That guard was supposed to have a bow and arrows, but since it was inaccurate Jordan Mechner just made the guard have a sword. He basically does nothing.
@@WealdaLupinus What are you talking about - historically or from game mechanics "at this time"? Because bows are one of the oldest weaponry of mankind, dated back to 9000 BCE - how could archery be "historically inaccurate" for the ancient persian kingdoms?
@@lolwhat19 yes. or you can turn left-right-left-right but don't let your shadow escape your body. just do it to make your life bottles empty and you die. it was really interesting back then when i and perhaps most players didn't have cheats or hints but we managed to solve it ourselves. i am surprised and amazed that i wasn't the only one.
@@erkascazuchi8443 i remember i was like 5 years and played it with my father (he did de fingers part, i memorized the dungeons) , i remember we stuck on flame like a month, and then just making him dance for fun i discovered the shadow coming out, i remember being so happy to have a new clue, also wainting for my father to came from work and show him, like two hours later we got it (first time by accident, left the prince death, went for a drink and when we came back, surprise, the bastard was alive)
I swear that voice 'Come to me !' still haunts me to this day. I was 7 when I played this game and am 36 now but somehow that voice has made its way into subconscious memory and I have not been able to get over it fully !
