Thank you to PCBWay for providing the colour stripe PCBs, I really hope it works out.

It turns out that 'Likes/Dislikes' and 'Shares' actually help the channel so, if you want to, please click the thumbs up or share the video.
I don't have a Patreon or a regular donate thingy, I get by fine. That said, if you are mega rich and fancy buying me a coffee, breadboards or CMOS ICs - paypal.me/Davi...
or if you fancy donating something I would find useful then feel free to check out my Amazon wishlist (No pressure) - www.amazon.co.u...
I put lots of my favourite products and stuff that helps me make video up on this Amazon page - www.amazon.com... It is one of those affiliate things.

That UV light is gonna take its sweet time curing anything at 4W, but it's better than nothing. Your best bet to cut costs is search for LED nail lamps that pump out at least 10x more UV. Thanks to gel polish, you can get one for $10 anywhere random crap is sold. I do some printmaking at home, so I bought a 20W UV flood lamp from Amazon.

I’ve used the green Chinese solder resist in the past. I’d print the solder mask pattern on transparency film. Clean the pcb thoroughly. Put a dab of the resist in the board. Put a piece of unprinten transparency film on top. Spread the resist around (underneath the film) with a credit card. Thinner is better (but in your case you actually care about the looks). Place the solder mask pattern on top. Put a piece of glass on top to make it lay flat. I would expose mine with two 1W UV leds for 10 minutes. After that remove the film(s). Scrub away the uncurled paint with acetone and q-tips. You can be relatively hard on it. The only problem I had was that sometimes small corners would lift from the pcb. If you removed all visible paint, go over it again. If there’s even a very thin (invisible) layer of paint left, soldering will be very hard (I learned that the hard way). After that give it another 10-30 minutes under the UV. Or leave it outside in the sun. Hope that helps.

Those displays are nice and I totally feel your fear when having to design your own parts. Glad it all worked out and can't wait to see some rainbow boards and custom soldermask work. And I'm shocked that UV lights are still so expensive with all the resin printer owners buying them these days...then again, that might also be why they are so expensive. I know I have a nice selection of 385-415nm wavelength light sources.

@torstenb5248
@torstenb5248 4 года назад
Those boards look brilliant. Really the price for the components is not all that expensive. Only compared to the dirt cheap aliexpress stuff they are. All in all thats not more than 15 or 20 quid for the whole assembly. Compared to many other hobbies that’s still almost nothing. That‘ll be at least 3 hours of fun. And a good reason to put out another video about it. Which is another 8 hours of „fun“

I used to see Eagle everywhere about 4 years ago, but due to Eagle policies, and KiCAD getting better, it pretty much seams to have disappeared. I like the look of Eagle better, but switching to KiCAD is the better option now that they fixed it up so much - KiCAD 4 years ago wasn't good -.
@DrGreenGiant
@DrGreenGiant 4 года назад
Long time user of Eagle, I love it, but recently I have finally needed to do a long differential pair for a USB connector. I've avoided needing to do anything with impedance and length matching but finally took the hit for an ESP32 project. Turns out Eagle does not have any tools for paired traces or any impedance calculations at all. Gutted
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 4 года назад
KiCad has a differential pair tool under the route menu, though I must confess to having never used it.

Measure twice, order once... I should learn how to do that! Btw... could you tell me the LCSC partnumber? Those extra "mounting" pads looks like they would provide some more strain relieve.
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 4 года назад
Really I didn't measure anything, praise to those mysterious datasheet creators. I think I could probably take another 0.25mm off the width. Which part are you after? The 7 Segments or the USB?

@azyfloof
@azyfloof 4 года назад
You have a centsiecond clock. A millisecond clock would have three decimal places after the seconds. Sorry 😜 It's good though! I wonder if you coulda fooled kicad by placing that LED in one of the cutouts? That's worth an experiment just to see if it runs the gerbers. Failing that, try putting solder mask back over those pads
@ianhaylock7409
@ianhaylock7409 4 года назад
Just stating the bleeding obvious, but couldn't you have put all the components on the front of the pcb. Then just turn the pcb's around when you get them. Et voila, the components are now at the back, and no led on the front.
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 4 года назад
I don't think it was necessarily that it was the front of the board for the soldermask, just that is had no parts on it. It just created gerbers that JLC thought we invalid, adding a part gave it some actual coordinate values and so JLC recognised it.
