For others trying to get all the info :) PCOS suggestions: Foods (low GI diet/lower carb): whole wheat bread, citrus fruits, milk, bulgur, sweet potatoes, chick peas, steel cut oats, lentils, healthy fats and proteins, higher fiber carbs, stabilize higher GI carbs with lean/healthy proteins and fats, be careful with restricting/too low calories/too few meals. Supplements: vitamin d, probiotics, omega 3, inositol (!!) Herbs, etc: macca root, ashwaghanda, holy basil, licorice, chase berry, tribulis terrestris. Anti-inflammatory foods, reduce CRP Get a lot of sleep (7-9 is the typical recommendation) and stress management, quit smoking cigarettes, get acupuncture, avoiding known potential endocrine disrupters (eg BPA). Exercise, yoga, meditation and massage, etc? (Not mentioned) weight loss for overweight women? More in-depth info in video. Eat enough food! Especially protein, and in AM and before bed. Medications (eg metformin, etc) Move your body in the way that fits for you Work on loving your body and RESPECTING your body! Have compassion for your body and gratitude for what it can do. ❤️😊

@@halima4355 Yes, as far as I know, most adults, especially those with PCOS, will benefit from eliminating milk/dairy. Alternative "milks" such as nut milks (almond, hazelnut, cashew etc), coconut milk and flaxseed milks are best. They won't mess with our hormones like dairy. Just make sure you're not allergic to any of these alternatives.

I also already struggled with a binge eating disorder and let me just say it has got much worse. Hi Hailey, consider checking your nutrient profile i.e. tracking everything you eat and comparing to RDA for each nutrient. I tend to want to eat more (in the I'm-not-satisfied-and-I-have-no-idea-why way) when I'm deficient in iron. You'll be surprised at how difficult it is to get 100% iron RDA even when you eat meat. So you never know, it could be a deficiency not a disorder (not necessarily iron, but anything your body needs, which translates to, cravings). Also RDA is for the average person. Your body might need more than RDA depending on its own needs. Like I have naturally higher levels of testosterone (very tall, lots of hair) so I might need more iron than the average woman.

Hi Hailey, have you ever been screened for ADHD? I have PCOS too and have always thought about food constantly and felt completely powerless to eat in a way that felt healthy (as opposed to slamming 3 bags of sour gummy bears in my car while crying). I was diagnosed this year with ADHD as an adult, and treatment has made a huge difference in the mental barrage of cravings. I'm actually able to notice my physical hunger cues. Just something worth looking into; might not be relevant to you but it was something I had never considered. Feel free to reach out if you have questions. ❤️

I'm literally on the verge of tears because this is the first time I've ever felt understood with my PCOS. I have been through 4 doctors in the past 5 years because they won't help me with any medical issues except just telling me to lose weight and putting me on experimental weight loss drugs. I have been pressured multiple times to have extreme weight loss surgery as my fix. This just confirms to me that I need to continue trying to find someone here who actually understands PCOS and how it affects me specifically.

Me too! No more toast, starchy cereals, or “dry carbs” for breakfast, and usually not for lunch. I used to love eating toast every morning with my breakfast, and be YEARNing for a nap by 11:00 AM. Now I will start my day with a black tea (and sometimes a green apple), followed by a polyphenol-rich smoothie (+collagen) for breakfast, and a big salad + 2 eggs scrambled for lunch. I will have a delicious helping of white basmati rice, a big salad, and sautéed chicken/shrimp/salmon for dinner. Sadly, I’m not eating red meat these days because it makes me constipated. I usually try to stop eating before 6 or 6:30 PM. I also try to drink Spearmint tea 2ce a day because it is clinically proven to lower androgen levels. I might snack on a date or two throughout the day, I might not. With this routine, my sugar and junk food cravings are no where NEAR as insane as they used to be. Good luck. And just remember, you’re not too big, or too skinny, or too hairy, or a hopeless case. You are loved.

A few points - 1. this is why we need OB's or doctors specifically trained in PCOS. The lack of medical knowledge of PCOS is really sad. 2. Once you do find a doctor who knows about PCOS it helps so much. I was put on metformin and i dropped weight effortlessly with intuitive eating. They said - of course you couldn't loose weight before, your body was literally fighting against you for every calorie! Ladies - get a doctor how knows about PCOS and have them treat you. It makes a world of difference.

I literally cried while watching... I've PCOS since my periods started and I'm 27 years old now at 81 kgs. All my doctor could tell me is to reduce my weight and take Glucophage or birth controls. Got fed up of taking Glucophage thrice daily 3years ago so I switched to birth controls which only worsened my situation and lead to more weight gain. So I switched back to Glucophage. Went through an abusive marriage including a miscarriage unknowingly that I was pregnant and was teased by my now ex husband every other day about my weight even to an extent that he restricted my food intake as per his choices. Now all I want is to eat as I wish, but everyone tells me to reduce weight. Weight loss has always been so difficult and no one ever understands the cravings you get. Its really hard to maintain a healthy body weight while dealing with other emotional factors too. But most people don't get it and it really hurts when doctors even don't understand. Its not as easy as it always seems on social media to shed lots of pounds. My best wishes to everyone out there struggling with PCOS.

When I moved to Romania, I lost 85 lbs and all my PCOS symptoms went away for the two years I was there. My symptoms and weight returned when I returned to the US. I believe this happened because the traditional Romanian diet aligns with the typical recommendations for PCOS - a Mediterranean diet, slightly elevated in protein with protein at every meal, no soy additives, very little dairy and relatively low in sugar and refined carbs.

@@AbbeysKitchen Unfortunately, it only works when I'm outside of the US. In the US, I'm morbidly obease whereas my weight drops to slightly overweight when I'm abroad through intuitive eating and jumps back up when I return. I've tried, unsuccessfully, to duplicate the same diet here but it doesn't work. After this happening 3 different time I've moved abroad, I'm almost convinced there is an environmental or food additives that my body is having trouble with in the US. I'm about to move abroad again and hopefully it will happen again because I feel much healthier, more energetic and I don't have the same food cravings.

its easy to say just give in to the cravings and eat but we cant though? I cant just give into my cravings every hour and eat crap, cakes, pizza's, donner, burgers, I think maybe we should have jumped more into what to eat rather than saying give way to your cravings I've had pcos for 10 years and I feel as though that's bad advice because we would only get bigger by doing that? i was told that at 13 and now I'm 4x bigger than i was. if they say give into your cravings and eat healthy it don't work like that either if I have nuts for example and healthy food when i crave crap it makes me worse, ill eat the nuts then 15 min later ill want more again, and again, its like an addiction, i have even resorted to starving myself ect and only having liquid diets and tbf it actually worked at the time when i did it and i lost over a stone, but obviously when u go back to reality you put it all back on so its not sustainable and makes u feel worse. im now 23 and at my witts end, metformin dont help, inositol does nothing, supplements don't, i do not ovulate at all, i don't eat bad carbs but still feel like I'm bloated to the point where I'm gonna pop, i cant control pcos, PCOS controls me.

The beginning few weeks of taking metformin is SO AWFUL!!! It would be lovely to also talk about the benefits of metformin during pregnancy for those with PCOS. I was told by my doctor that it lowers my miscarriage rate from the 50% that is typical for those with PCOS, back down the normal rate for the average woman. I'm sorry but women with PCOS are at a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes among other things. Having less visceral fat, the fat around your stomach can help reduce that risk. So weight loss is a good idea. I think the doctors and obgs are just not doing a good job of helping their patients. You don't just tell someone "go and lose weight" these doctors are supposed to be helping them not leaving them with more questions. It is not about dieting it's about finding the right diet for you because not everyone with PCOS has the same struggles. I am very happy I got diagnosed when I did if I would've been diagnosed when I was a teenager I would probably have an eating disorder. Because all I cared about was being skinny, now my goal is healthy now I know there is a difference. I exercise every day for 2 hours and I eat whole foods, I make sure I eat enough protein since I exercise so much, I make sure I eat my healthy fats and I no longer eat processed carbs and I still have not lost my desired weight. It can get frustrating and if you're not patient that's when those harmful diet culture tips come to play. Instead of telling people "don't lose weight", we should be giving them information about how to in a healthy way. The bottom line, I don't think losing weight its a bad idea women just need to be better informed on how they can do that with PCOS.

Seconded! There's so much out there that seems like weird advice and it's hard to know what's silly or tapping into trendy advice for the clicks, vs what's actually useful, or what's even less relevant if, say, one's condition is properly managed with medication. Some places suggest there's very little one might want to avoid or even limit, other sites are like "never eat XYZ" and it's like... really? I have Hashimoto's, am well-medicated and monitored, and have never really done anything specific with food - but I see so many people out there asking if there's a special way they should be eating with Hashimoto's or another kind of hypothyroidism and I suppose it makes me wonder if there's something to it, or if it's just Wellness Trend rearing its head again.

This was informative, but this may not apply to all Women diagnosed with PCOS. This may also be a little misleading. I was diagnosed with PCOS at 15 and for the next 15 years I never had a regular menstrual cycle,I gained weight rapidly (100lbs.), my complexion got shades Darker with discoloration on my neck and cheeks , I grew facial hair and I had never been pregnant even after being married and having unprotected sex without birth control. The advice my Dr. Gave me Was a nutrition plan, meds, and the assurance that if I Take my meds, maintain my health And eating that I will be free of symptoms and free of medication eventually. I DID NOT TAKE HER ADVICE OR ANY OTHER DR.’s ADVICE UNTIL I WAS 30 AND I WAS 295lbs at 5’3 STRUGGLING TO CONCEIVE. I said that to say, you are Right! You are also wrong. We should not diet, but we should change what we consume and how we consume it. I had to change my entire mindset about food and it’s value In my life. Literally, LIVE OR DIE! For over 2years I reduced portion size, substituted proteins, eliminated sugary drinks, cut sugars, reduced alcohol and resisted ice cream, until I Reached my target weight (195lbs). My levels regulated and I eliminated my meds. I don’t have any PCOS symptoms, I don’t take medication, I’ve had a cycle every month for almost 3yrs(annoying lol)my skin and neck cleared up including facial hair. I was pregnant and I had a miscarriage, but I’m just glad to even be able to conceive on my own. At least I know it’s possible now. I Also, look and feel much healthier. I can’t speak for anyone else, but this is my personal experience with PCOS AND WEIGHT LOSS. I got down and maintain a weight where my body can function properly on its on without assistance from meds. I’m not saying that this will help everyone or weight is everyone’s issue, but this may encourage women who have tried to loose weight in hopes of becoming as close to being cured as you can get.

I feel like I want to cry after watching this. I've had so many bad experiences with doctors that didn't care to help me and were so focused on making me feel guilty for my weight gain. Once, an endocrine prescribed me anxiolytics because as he put it 'i was gaining weight because i was probably anxious which was making me not follow the diet correctly and snacking too much'. I'm so glad i decided to stop seeing him after that and stop trying to find an explanation or cure for my PCOS through health professionals. The best I did for my health was to stop dieting and start exercising more, I have always eaten very healthy, so to me it was easier to manage listening to my body, than following stupid calorie counting diets. I don't care anymore if I don't loose weight, what matters to me is being healthy and getting strong. PS. Im not saying all doctors are bad, I just haven't been able to find a good one for this particular issue of mine.

4:00 & after... about how insulin & blood sugar are affected by certain diets, especially timing of eating (around 4:45) - delaying time between meals instead of frequent meals is MUCH more stabilizing for your blood sugar if you are eating low carb. So pretty much you need to do some more research or don't talk about this topic if you don't know what you're talking about. Especially since PCOS & insulin resistant go hand in hand, you need to stabilize your blood sugar & insulin, and the way to do that is eating low carb & fasting.

(And if you insist on using it, DM him on Instagram for advice.) - Take it daily for 6 months. Results can come much sooner but for some people/issues it can take that long. I was diagnosed with pcos and the first thing that was recommended to me was to see a nutritionist but was pushed to follow a 1200 calorie diet which spiraled into calorie counting and made my relationship with food so toxic and I would get frustrated when the weight would come back when I cheated on that diet. Now I’ve learned to love my body as it is and eat a healthy diet that isn’t calorie restricted but full of whole foods and I feel like my body feels nurished and better then ever. Doctors still tell me I’m overweight and need to be 125 range when I’m not but when i was “skinny” I never felt so unhealthy. I love this content! I was diagnosed with severe pcos at the age of 17 (didn't have a period for a year in my teens which was a big red flag) and my specialist told me to aim for protein but never lift weights as weightlifting is "testosterone producing". I followed his advice for years and honestly started to hate walking (recommended 1 hour of walking every day) and that made it worse. So I started to ignore his advice and started lifting and it REALLY helped me out so much, and has helped with cravings. Now I crave lifting weights more than sweets (though the craving for sugar is INTENSE).

This is so crazy... I've recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and my endo said that it is likely I have PCOS as well. When I attempt to eat healthy I get the most intense sugar/carb cravings I have to drop everything for a chocolate bar or pasta. I always thought it was withdrawals from eating healthy.

I have been struggling so bad with binge eating and INSANE cravings and never knew it was related to PCOS. Thank you so much for this video! I know we just learned a lot about loving our bodies and not dieting, but what do you both recommend for someone with PCOS who DOES want to lose weight? I did keto in the past and lost 50 pounds but it’s obviously unsustainable long term and I quit long ago. I have maintained my weight for two years but would like to lose a bit of additional weight and feel stuck.

Wow... I was diagnosed a few years ago with PCOS but given very little guidance on how to manage it (aside from “take birth control”). After watching this video, I’ve made so many connections between my chronic insomnia, and cravings... the cravings especially I always chalked up to being “weak willed” when it comes to food, but like you mentioned, they are like primal cravings! Thank you so much for this content!

The day I got my diagnosis was the day I decided to love my body and treat it the way it deserves to be treated. What others view as broken I realised works incredibly hard for me everyday just to make it through (one of my symptoms is extreme menorrhagia) . I love my body, she fights for me & we get through it together every month ❤️

Exactly how I feel. I’ve been fasting for 3 weeks exercising 5 days a week and have lost 6 lbs. but I can’t seem to lose lose weight. It’s like I have to starve to lose. I realized all of this walking on the treadmill tonight. I really proud of myself. Crying happy tears bc I will continue to fight. I didn’t jog or incline to 10. I walked for 45 min comfortably

Omg Thank you so much for this! The lack of information, research and solutions for PCOS is crazy to me. I struggled for years before my diagnosis and then 6 years to get pregnant. I read about people’s success with Keto and PCOS and decided to give it a try. I did it for 5 months, lost 40lbs and got pregnant! It completely changed my life and all my symptoms. I’m glad a low glycemic diet is being recommended here, no doctor I ever saw in 12 years ever brought up food as a method of control for PCOS. So discouraging.

Omg thank you so much. This video shocked me in a good way. My doctor told me exactly what you said, lose weight. And I managed to, im 160 now and 5'5' but i realized ive def binged multiple times in fact two days ago i kept eating chips with cheese and i was full but i kept eating it, i didnt want to think of stopping. But eventually i did and now my cravings make so much more sense. Also if i dont eat when im hungry and i wait until i become ravenous i just start crying? Its really embarassing, is this because im way too emotional or does this connect to my pcos? Sorry for my rambling I really want to thank u for making this video, u probably wont see this but its so helpful thank you

Thanks for making this video. When I was diagnosed with PCOS, when trying to conceive, my fertility doctor would tell me to lose weight. Yes duh of course I knew this. My fertility doctor would weigh me and take my bmi every time I went in for a check up and I felt so shamed if I didn’t lose any weight or didn’t meet the goals they wanted. For a year she did this and refused to help treat my infertility until I lost a certain amount of weight (I was definitely overweight but not unhealthy). I was doing everything I could but it just never seemed enough for them. I felt like crying every time I was in her office as she just didn’t seem to understand. I was so frustrated at them for wasting a year of my time that I just left and felt like giving up. My GP did put me on metformin, which I do believe helped in some way. Also the stress of not needing to keep up this unattainable weight loss regime. 6 months later I got pregnant on my own.

Abbey, 2019 was the worst year of my life. I found out I have PCOS while trying to conceive, had to undergo fertility treatments and just had a miscarriage after finally getting pregnant... I can't mentally get to a place where I don't despise my body and feel betrayed by it. I don't feel like "honoring" my body when it has brought me only suffering. Thanks for the reminder.

Abbey, thank you for reaching out. At my initial appointment I wasn’t even offered treatment, the doctor just said “lose 5% of your body weight and come back”. I’m slowly recovering after my recent miscarriage and honestly, learning to eat again has been extremely difficult because I was made to feel like I brought this on myself. Thanks for sharing your painful past with us, we all appreciate it.

Thank you so much for this!! PCOS is such a confusing diagnosis and I never know what the right questions are to ask my doctor because I have never gotten a full understanding of my PCOS nor did I get a lot of information because it's just that confusing and not a lot of doctors know a great deal about it (despite how common PCOS is)

THANK YOU. Just for real. I’ve spent years trying to get a logical hold on PCOS and have struggled with the “right” diets that caused me to yo-yo in eating habits (slim PCOS here, too, so it took longer to get a dr to diagnose me correctly). Rean Manalili hi there! Personally I just try to stay away from "diets" like keto and similar as they are never sustainable for me and I end up breaking them. I’ve very slowly removed dairy and I’m always trying to stop eating processed sugar (sigh pastries) so I can keep insulin levels in check. That seems to help my acne stay away, too. Still learning what works for me. I try to incorporate any androgen blocking foods like salmon, nuts and spearmint tea (and others). I think a huge part is just trying to de-stress and rest. Very strict diets are stressful for me lol. Best of luck to you in your journey! :)

NOTE FOR YOUR VIDEO: Weight loss is recommended and helpful because adipose tissue aka fat cells in our body stores estrone, another form of estrogen. Excess fat cells means excess estrogen.

Yes! I felt as though this was dismissed. The recommendation for weight loss isn’t purely based on weight shaming. The video was great for slimmer individuals but there are individuals out there (50-80% of those with PCOS) that would greatly benefit from a 5-10% weight reduction.

I have just been diagnosed with PCOS, within the last 2 months, and I’m so glad you’ve made this video! I turn 23 in a few months and since puberty I’ve had trouble managing my weight and acne. I’ve also been borderline eating disordered (I only are small dinners for 5 years, not regular meals) so my metabolism is pretty screwy anyway. I trust your advise and will be bringing up what was mentioned in this video with my gyno, psychiatrist, and dermatologist, all the women who have helped me find my PCOS diagnosis.

This is a tribute not a criticism first of all so stay away silly people Abbey ... is not, like Margaret Atwood in Northrup Frye's intro to one of her lectures a free standing structure needing no introduction. Just something I needed to write. I am a recovering alcohlic sp and went from a UofT lecturer to sleeping in bank machines after the death of my parents. The 12 steps work for me but exercise and nutrition are not things addressed in this program and over the last 20 yrs I slowly transitioned from pescatarian cheating often because my parents were wonderful and there was nothing like either a jewish Berliner bean soup with a ham hock or Serbian pasoujl ditto with a lamb shank.I am a healthy vegan and even after a back injury I get about 1.5 hours in with my Mighty Peke Kiwi during Covid 19 and the careful community of dog walkers all know my dog who is a true emissary of good will. I turned 65 this month and was reflecting on what women do to feel bien dans leur peau and I can see how this leads to disordered eating. My one caveat is that Abbey is a nutritionist and intuitive eating for her is now instinctive but informed ... I know goji man wrote about this let it go. My sister went vegan over night for ethical reasons and unlike me loves to eat hates to cook so bloating due to too much kale and huge infusion of legumes led to ... KETO! Oy vey! Her loving wonderful husband developed gout after 6 months of grass fed everything and no starch and what is left ... diet wars. He does his own thing now which sounds like lots of plants, adequate protein etc. all round good guy. I am lucky to have a job as a translator during this period gratitude is how I begin my day; just a general testimony for people struggling with various issues,

Where I live there's so little information about PCOS. First I was misdiagnosed, then after I got diagnosed, first thing a doctor said was to get a surgery to remove cysts, then other doctor didn't even test me for insulin resistance, I don't think they knew it's related. And she put me on hormonal medicines, which had more side effects than it cured anything, and only kept asking when I was going to get pregnant, like that was a remedy. After realizing that she was not providing me with good answers and really curing rather than just curing results, I stopped and went to natural remedies, and now I get so much more results without all that side effects from birth pills and hormones. It's sad that I found out more about PCOS than those Doctors did.

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. For the past three years I've been in the gym and tried to eat very clean and have only gained weight. A part of me knew I'd have it because my mom does. I was pretty devastated because I really want to lose weight and I knew that it'll be hard to do. With PCOS, it's pretty difficult to lose weight. This video is super informational and helpful about what I should try eating to help with weight issues. I'm hoping I can drop some pounds soon, and all the foods for the GI diet are ones I actually love. Can't wait to try it.
