40,000km update after this mod • THE CORRECT PCV mod 40... As a followup to my video earlier today about my Alloytec PCV cleaning Maintenance for HFV6 3.6L LY7 • Alloytec PCV Location ... and after a few comments I learned that there are specific hole sizes to the mod to increase the hole size on the PCV valve to allow the engine to breathe better this really applies to any GM 3.6L V6 also known as HFV6 (high feature v6) which is used in Australia in Commodore, Rodeo, Camaro, Cadillac, Equinox, Captiva and other models and ranges that used the GM 2.8L 3.0L 3.2L and 3.6L ALLOYTEC LF1 LFW LY7 LLT engines as far as I am aware LFX received the fix for this in the mid of 2013 (could be 2014 in some parts of the world) from the factory.
From some googling some reports that bottom holes are 1.5mm and 2mm with a 3mm top hole, while others say both bottoms are 2mm and the top is 3mm previously I used the 3.5mm top and 2mm bottom which resulted in quite an increase in oil return into the intake, so I decided to grab another PCV Valve I had laying around today and did 1.5mm, 2mm bottoms and 3mm top, reinstalled and see what the outcome might be like in a few month time as now I know I have a healthy engine in my Adventra.
I do not wish to install a catch can, so if this mod returns oil I will revert, but if it doesn't and the PCV Valve collects I might pull the PCV Valve again and try to go larger on the holes again by 0.5mm - also after checking my drill bits are the correct size as I have a feeling my 1.5mm isn't the right size (which I realised later when comparing my holes to other pictures around on the internet).

Did think about doing this, but ultimately my intake is mostly always dry anyway. I don’t know how people end up with some much oil in theirs. I wonder if it’s because we hardly do high rpm work and mostly low rpm as we use them off road. We use full synthetic 5w30 same as you?

Yes he? is very resourceful, 👍 I found out something new which I have video footage of but not yet done an upload. If PCV is drilled beyond these specific sizes when you pull the oil cap off you get feedback from intake pressure and NO OIL is visible hitting top of the reflection plate at the fill hole on idle. Replace it with a correctly sized drilled or factory one and oil instantly returns visible hitting top of inside engine and flowing down over the plate visible at the fill point. I wonder if this means anything with further negative effects as a result of oversized hole or total removal of the PCV beyond the mentioned specifications by @Fu Manchu ❓

I think this mod is a very good idea. I pulled my pcv out at about 223, 000k for the first time lm in a v6 with very good oil hygene. The pcv was clean and clear but the top of the pcv had a black soot crust.There was evidence at the rim of the hole in the crank case that the black layer was lining the crank case cover. I drilled 2mm both tops and 3mm bottom hole before i saw the recommendation for 2mm 1.5 and 3mm. I with have to see what effect this has. Sizes came from a US video which may not have had the precision of this one. I have a catch can as well Anyone got any experience with the effects of the 2mmx 2 and 3mm pcv hole set up?

@AllTerrainAction

yeah if engine is very.. sludged 100% do not use any engine clean additives, I think diesel oil is a bit more sensible as its a longer process time to break down. If you know your engine is bad, I tell people change to diesel spec oil, same viscosity but check your OIL FILTER at 500km, 1,000km and 2,000km at any point if it looks like its full of sludge or contamination, change oil again early/stright away and monitor again until your seeing a clean filter again just because this is the most saftest way to clean up an engine over time.

I've always added a baffled catch can setup and not used the pcv valve in most my car's. If you end up getting excessive blow by you could always add one in before it returns back into the air intake. I'll add but I'm not 100% sure how it all works on the alloytec.
@AllTerrainAction
@AllTerrainAction Год назад
PCV is just PCV so same same, ours is not a one way valve but it seems if the passthrough is too large you'll get excessive oil return, I think if it was a through system and you had a catch can its fine but from what I now understand these micro adjustments to hole sizes (2mm bottom, 3mm top) lets the factory ventilation system breathe so much better that the engine behaves better. I found when I pulled driver side cam covers off, the way the case is setup if you abused your alloytec and did not service well and also neglected PCV maintenance there is a chamber at the rear side of the motor that will get clogged up underneath the cam cover, and even though the PCV valve might get cleared the passage under the cam cover is still, clogged and has build up of burnt oil and deposits. Diesel grade engine oil helps break it down over time, but I would think a heavily neglected alloytec would need cam covers off and a manual tidy up followed by Diesel grade oil for awhile if not indefinitely after. People say Diesel grade oil lacks the zinc needed for the alloytec, but we and many hundreds of other v6 Adventra's owners have not seen a side effect for almost half a decade and some of those engines are on original timing chains and getting up near 400,000km range with the last 200,000km's of that been following this diesel oil use. 5W-30 Full Syn at 7,000 - 10,000 km intervals. First oil change with diesel, beware of build up of sludge and change oil and filter early if your oil filter shows signs of collection of high amounts of sludge in the first 500-1,000km's after your first diesel oil use.

Yes you are correct about the PCV valve. I was getting mixed up with the EVAP valve which is to do with the fuel vapour from the fuel tank. It would also appear that the VE Commodore does not have a EGR valve as you mentioned. Something we have noticed @@bathtime21 which isnt relevent to your case relating to fuel vapor if you get negative pressure in your fuel system (unscrew fuel cap and get air suction sound/release) your charcoal canister might be packed up. This can also lead to engine crank but no turn over problem occuring often on a warm day, or randomly when you have still fuel in the tank but engine will cut out or run poorly at idle. We are seeing more VZ's with this issue at this age and is becoming quite common.

@AllTerrainAction
@AllTerrainAction 10 месяцев назад
Yes 5w30 full synthetic is the way, to slowly clean up built up sludge over oil changes use diesel spec oil that is dexos1 or dexos2 approved and it’s safe for your alloytec 3.6 - check filter every 1000km to ensure clean up process isn’t building too much sludge on the filter and change as nessasary. First oil change after 5k then 7-10k changes there after. If engine was very sludgy you may need to change the filter once at 500km and again at 1000km for the very first due of diesel spec oil.

That PCV valve is not a 'valve', more accurately it should be called a breather or even a PC breather regulator. If you open it up there is no 'valve'.
@AllTerrainAction
@AllTerrainAction Год назад
Yeah this is correct, we probably could have said this - originally PCV systems where one way with a valve on these particular engines it’s as you say really a breather with limited flow based on hole size. Drilling this too excessively will permit negative pressure in the crankcase and blocked will prevent normal operation of the engine, linked to timing chain failure relating to lower oil pressure. Left bank has a straight through breather, while right bank has this breather/valve.

The holes your drilling are insignificant and do little to nothing to relieve crankcase pressure! It would be better to simply drill the holes as large as possible to help relieve crankcase pressure!

Not when we opened ours... was nice and golden yellow/brown this is primarily an issue for early life abused alloytecs but it's better to do this than not, drilling huge holes for no reason is actually more of a waste of time than anything unless you have a catch can.
