You are right that the PCV valve is always a good start. Since you know nothing about this vehicle, I would check sparkplugs, (cap and rotor if it has them) and check resistance on the spark plug wires since they look new. Next would be intake/fuel. If carb, try carb cleaners and carb rebuild if you are comfortable. If fuel injected, run some fuel injector cleaner through it, in fact, fuel injector cleaner sometimes can help a carb if it is not too bad. Hope to view the progress on this thing.

SeaFoam it, grab a rag to and clean the throttle body real good with some throttle body cleaner...and maybe replace the plugs I run E3 Plugs and they are awesome. I did all this with my Jeep and it runs like a Raped Ape!
Kind of crazy how lazy people are when you get a used vehicle and a two dollar part has never been replaced in over 20 years. sorry to hear your troubles hopefully you can get it all out without issue.

Do these have Idle Air Control Valves? I just had a similar issue in my little car and went through the Mass Air flow sensor, IAC, PCV valve and they were all cheap replacements too.
Yes they do. That's definitely on the list after the tune up, fuel filter, and crankcase breather filter . Appreciate the suggestion I'm trying to do it scientifically to find exactly what's the cause for the rough idle when in gear with foot on the brake .
I had the same problem with my 93 Dakota 5.2 magnum and sounds like the EGR valve or valve cylinoid the hoses that Crystler used in those years are plastic with rubber fittings and it tends to Crack and break in excessive heat, so for instance the water pump fails and the engine overheats, it's what happend to me.
I have a 97 ZJ 5.2 and having the same issues off and on, I have replaced the IAC and have had some success, however mine is losing power going up inclines now, so I'm going to check the fuel filter this weekend
On 97 or newer fuel filter is in the tank. I sold this ZJ but after complete tune up still had issues. I would suggest checking for plugged cats. Think that was the issue.
Say brother my 5.9 has a loud clacking pic valve I just changed it out and it’s loud as hell. Also my coolant sensor light keeps coming up even after installing a new one as well. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks
So I am guessing you mean PCV valve? Sometimes it could be as simple as a faulty, PCV right out of the box. Sometimes that can be caused by a leaking head gasket or some type of loss of suction. Look for vacuum leaks. It can make noises when there’s not proper flow. I would suggest tracing all the wires for that sensor. If you don’t see anything wrong, try another sensor they are known for coming out of the box Not working nowadays unfortunately. Hopefully that was helpful.

@@johnwwest8407 no I didn’t. I did a basic tune up plugs, wires, cap , rotor but never did find it. I actually sold it. I’m guessing plugged cats to be a culprit. Or a sensor. But after getting it I really didn’t have the time or funds to put the $20k in it to make the crawler I was looking for. Instead we decided to wheel the already built jk a little harder haha.
