Good brake fluid can mean the difference between on-point braking and “spongy brakes”. As the brake fluid ages, it absorbs water, or moisture from the atmosphere, and degrades. Heat also causes the brake fluid to become ineffective, and heat is a major byproduct of braking - try touching your brake disc after a ride for a scalding lesson. (JK, don’t do that). The easiest way to keep your braking system in top shape is to replace your brake fluid annually. You can also upgrade your brake fluid for a much more consistent braking performance, for a fraction of a cost as compared to upgrading pads or the master cylinder. In this episode of PD Simplified, Shumi explains how brake fluid can affect your braking performance and what you can do to improve it.
