PD Simplified | How To Use Your Brakes

Brakes are the most powerful controls on your motorcycle. Even more powerful than your engine. And learning how to use such a potent tool correctly will help you ride better. And one of the worst things to do is grab a handful of your brakes - that WILL do more harm than good. What you want to do is modulate your front brakes with two or one fingers, depending on how powerful they are. Braking transfers all the weight of the motorcycle to the front, and thus increases friction between the front wheel and the road. This also means your rear wheel has little to no traction and using the rear brakes hard can cause a rear-wheel lock-up or the rear ABS to kick in. On the other hand, if you have a pillion and/or luggage, you still have weight on the back, and you should use the rear brake in this case. But there's more to braking which Shumi explains in this episode of PD Simplified.

May be not as simple as it sounds, especially bcz 80% riders doesn't seem to understand when to switch between high beam to low beam and vice versa. Or may be we are not telling them why it's important to do it. So I completely agree with @Namesake but for a different reason.

I have a few more tips. 1. If the tyre skids, release the corresponding brake immediately. You have way less time to do this with the front compared to the rear brake. 2. If you grabbed the throttle hard and some obstacle came in front of you, cut that power with the clutch as you start braking. Normally, you shouldn't pull in the clutch while braking, though. 3. Engine braking while coming down a hill gives a very good control, better than using only brakes. 4. Going uphill- use mainly rear brake. Going downhill- use front brake. 5. Sportsbike, front heavy bikes- use mainly front brake. Cruisers- use a mix of front and rear. Can go harder on the rear brake. 6. With a pillion. The braking distance significantly increases. Also, can use more pressure than usual on the rear. 7. Brake before a turn, unless you're an expert at braking in/ through the turn. 8. Reduce speed if you see vehicles bunching up ahead. 9. Don't overtake close to a bigger vehicle. Create a large gap if you can. Complete overtaking maneuver fast. 10. It is hard to respond to others braking suddenly if you're tailgating. Maintain distance.

@BlackHawkTejas
@BlackHawkTejas 3 месяца назад
@@bane4165Smaller tyres on scooters need a more cautious approach! Use front brakes; left lever more & in emergency or panic braking use both. Also on slippery or less grippy surfaces always be cautious, especially sand & mud! Always reduce the speed of the scooter on wet surfaces, be extra careful during rainy season. Once a week check the whole brake system or clean it properly, especially during monsoon.

Practicing Panic braking also helps with your nerves and your reactions. Earlier I used to really panic and did not think of much things except for slamming the brakes. But now with practice, I'm calmer during such situations and can think of way more variables and be more aware of the situation and hence can make those split-second judgements with a calm mind.

Great information as always. I have spent hours arguing with my peers on how to make the apt usage of the front brakes. This is a topic which applies to everyone but a handful of us who give a thought about the dynamics. Theories like this should be made indispensable for anyone who rides a two-wheeler. Request for a future video : proper handlebar gripping etiquette.

Funny thing about front brakes is if u ask any rider on road who is not much of an enthusiast, they will surely tell u that they use rear brakes more and the front brakes are not safe to use. This is what even I was taught when I was learning to ride. Heck, even my elders at that time had suggested me to stay away from using discs and prefer drum brakes🤣

PD: I know this may sound funny but I feel there should be a Simplified episode on Lighting, cars and bikes both. I can strongly say there are still many riders out there who still have no idea when to use a high beam and when not to, when and why you should be using the pass lights and how to position the auxillay lights. I have seen enough times where riders have more light throwing on the approaching traffic rather than illuminating the road. More ridiculous is mostly cars; they just never turn off high beam in any situation. I feel this topic can aware many riders beacuse night riding is more challenging than riding during the day. This episode was very helpful tho !
@sportstours24
@sportstours24 2 года назад
I can shed light on the car issue since I ride and drive. In India, it is very dangerous to ride a car with low beam on dimly lit highways. You will not see pedestrians on the side of the road until you're too close. I have exceptional eyesight, and after the horrors I have faced, I avoid low beam in cars. This also applies to vehicles which are invisible due to the absence of brake lights/reflectors.

The major advise i used to get about braking from old people, especially dad, was to rely on the back brake as they all thought that it was better to control the bike in case of a tyre lock or the whole sand slippery scenario (No ABS). And i continued to believe so. Although later on, i relied mostly on the engine braking where i just gear down while slightly applying the brakes and this seems very good to control the bike. Now i gotta try to learn with the front brakes as said.

Great video! But you could have added additional information regarding braking of a scooter (At least what's available in India at the moment). I don't think using just the front brake using 2 fingers is going to bring a scooter to a stop, due to it's center of gravity being different from that of a bike and also due to having underpowered set of brakes. I've been waiting for this for a really long time. There's a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding out there. My own father who taught me how to ride told me to almost exclusively use the rare brakes because the front can slide out. I'll show him this video. You guys are amazing! 💖 There's still one doubt tho. Is the front brakes thing still true while turning? Should it still be 70-30/80-20 while you're turning? I guess rare tyre sliding out while turning is much worse than it sliding out when riding straight. How to brake properly while turning if you had to?

I think the best thing to do when blinded by oncoming high beam or any bright head light glare is 1) slow down to below 50-60kmph(subject to your focusing power) whilst keeping to the left , 2) keep left eye vision focused on the left side of the road but simultaneously shut the right eye and only open it after the bright glare has passed. An alternative is to close your eyes by only 10-20%. Or wear night riding/driving glasses to reduce glare, yellow lenses tend to cut it down, if I'm not mistaken. There are slight risks involved but if you focus and actually pay attention to the road, you should be fine. It works but it'll take time and practice to get the hang of.

Nice to bump into this video. Been dog hit and have had a broken wrist and another time a broken shoulder at the slowest of speeds in narrow village roads. Any advice fir braking at slow speeds of say even 35 when suddenly a fog runs across or a man suddenly comes in your way. Braking distance ld be just three to four meters. Due to this experience is chilling to see riders ride at 100 kms on highways. What if an animal or a human just cuts across suddenly. Google showed ktm 390 adv as the safest bike in Bhasat due to traction control. But the power of 43bhp terrifies me. My riding is highway only. 125 kms one way on week ends. Occasional trip pune to goa. I have done goa on my yamaha fz also with a mere 13bhp. Would 43 bhp be needed for my riding. Or is a Ronin with 20 bhp more than sufficient where comfort and handling is very good. I am 185 cms and 53 yo. Love hiking cycling. Now.looking at biking. Can I chat with you on WA to help me decide?? Had a friend who died in an accident a month after buying a 40L Harley. Thus training is essential.

Also consider the aspect of OEMs ignoring braking systems. It's rarely that I hear in a review that bikes brakes are good. They are either spongy, lack feedback at the lever, not enough bite etc. OEMs won't give ABS in 125 cc bikes, why? Cause they will give 124.9 cc engine and law says it has to be 125cc and above.

I totally agree with why front brake is superior to the rear one. But isn't 2 brakes applied together better than just front brake applied? Does it give more stopping power & useful for panic braking? or it doesn't? My view is - Apply rear brake, control a bit, apply front brake while holding onto rear and come to stand still. This feels comfortable as I would start to apply front brake at much lower speed than if I had to brake use with only front. This makes me feel less topply (if such word exist). yeah so, are 2 brakes together better? any views :)

Don't know the reason but previous generation was damn scared of front brakes and some also have the lever tip deformed so they don't use it accidentally. When we were taught to ride, we were forcefully told not to use front brakes ever be it with cycle or motorcycle. It is after purchasing Pulsar in 2010 and getting introduced to front disk brakes, I realized how much powerful and efficient front braking is compared to rear braking which almost instantly sends you sliding.

Perfect..Even I am scared to use rear brakes on my RE classic 350 non ABS model... I use front brake, engine braking max to slow down and it works perfectly... Only caution is keep handle bar straight if u depend on front brakes..

If 80-90% front brake is used (primarily a city ride), then does that mean that a Single Channel ABS is more than enough for a rider's safety?

@powerdrift @shumi Would you still suggest using more front brakes than rear on something heavy like a Bullet? Mine has Drum brakes skinny tires and no ABS!

I was expecting shumi to dicuss scooter braking also, vast majority of Indian two wheelers are scooters which have some sort of a combi braking system ( atleast relatively newer models) and the vast majority of bikes don't have ABS as standard, I have had 3 accidents due to overusing the front brake on my TVS Jupiter as it locks up very easily and slides under you, I have learnt and switched over to using the brakes more rear dominant as in I bring in the front brake to the equation once I have already used the rear brake, the combi system just makes this more confusing as it takes away the confidence which is the most important thing while riding, non the less this was a very good video

Pulsar 220 taught me this ...since no rear disc bite at all. But it also shows with slippery or gravel roads, we need that stopping power from rear discs. So manufacturers shouldn't really compromise on rear disc stopping power.

Great video with very usable and implementable information....on this topic, can PD make a video that talks about Braking ahead of or into corners specifically our Indian roads (not on a track)...I personally have a habit of braking through turns and I'm not sure if that is wrong or not, but given how quickly the bike line or speed needs to be changed (due to an obstacle, pothole, an idiot not looking at their rear view or any other reason) I keep doing it...plz correct me on the best technique in such a situation

I love riding and I probably know where to lean in which way but still if you can explain it in your way. Which is the best leaning postion while cornering, leaning towards the turn, neutral or counter leaning? And I wish to live your life someday, like around the bikes. ❤️

Do these braking fundamentals also work similarly on non-ABS vehicles such as a bit older bikes or mopets such as Activa???

Hi, please respond. I have issue with rr310 brake sensor, with the very light touch to the brake paddle, it turns on the tail light. While riding, It looks like i am continuously applied brakes. Many times my friends told me this. I asked service center guys to fix they told it is built like this only. Please let me know if there is a fix or it is what it is.

These days many bikes already come with around 70% front braking power and 30% back braking power. So even if the user hits the back brake hard it won’t engage fully.

Riding is an art... But braking is a skill. I learnt this skill from my uncle and one day I will pass it on to my younger generation. When you ride And situation goes out of hand. Remember, you can always brake. That One thing will always be in your control.

I have got adjusted my front wheel brakes when I was riding to Lansdown last year ... I observe the same usage of front wheel brakes more effectively & used it most of the time during my ride, though the video was more helpful to learn some more facts.

A nice piece of information. As a rider I would like to see more illustrious description rather than a verbal description. May be you could ride a bike showing the brake patterns which you explained altogether for a better understanding.

Can you please show/suggest how to control the bike on tarmac/cement roads when the road has longitudinal cracks or dips and the front wheel goes into a wobble. It's pretty scarry when this happens. Thank you.
