I’ll be performing a periodic calibration of the PDK going forward. It is required that PDK fluid is changed before calibration. Hence, I’ll be performing this PDK clutch calibration after my periodic fluid changes every 40K miles. Although I’ll be performing a full calibration, only a clutch bite point recalibration / adaptation is recommended.
A full PDK Calibration includes (1) calibration of the selector level position and transmission range sensor; (2) calibration of the distance sensors and (3) adaptation of the clutch bite points.
This video document my experience with the calibration process.
I did a lot of research on this, and consulted with a reputable Indy shop, that confirmed they actually do the full calibration process after every clutch fluid change as a matter of practice, although they said only the clutch bite adaptation is required (that is how they described it).
As a mechanical engineer with a lot of experience in industrial maintenance, albeit not in automotive engineering, periodic calibration makes sense to me.
With use, sensors tend to drift and mechanical components tend to wear. This is a natural characteristic of systems, whether industrial or automotive. We perform periodic calibration in industrial systems (we call it proactive calibration) to ensure we correct systems drift and as a consequence, optimize signals and mechanical cohesion. Therefore, when I heard this from my friend at this shop, it made a lot of sense given my experience.
As I stated, I didn’t notice any marginal gains that I could feel (with my senses), but I have to assume that given the calibration performed, the PDK is operating at its optimal level. After a few drives, including a 600 mile drive to another state and back, the PDK feels great.
I’m not advocating that everyone should now run and do a calibration. All I’m saying is that I’ll be doing periodic calibration (together with fluid change) on mine because the whole process and outcome makes sense to me from engineering perspective. This is stated in the disclaimer of every video I make… it is me, performing DIY maintenance on my car.

Sure! Let us know how it goes! In my case, PIWIS lost communication with the control module a number of times, so I had to restart the process a number of times. Do not worry, just restart the process.

Also, I need to clarify that this calibration process should not be done as a result of the fluid change. The clutch bite point adaptation should be done periodically and for it to be performed, the fluid must be changed… so it is just good timing to perform the calibration/adaptation after the fluid change.

Great video and great channel! Thanks for sharing this. I have a 2016 Macan Turbo incoming, and when it gets here I need to catch it up on all the deferred maintenance. I plan to get a Piwis 3 so I can do everything myself (nearest dealer is 6+ hours away) and take care of all the surprises that will come along the way. I just joined Macanforums and will PM you for ideas on the best path to getting the Piwis 3.

Santi, please excuse my ignorance, I'm new to Porsche. I Googled the tool you mentioned in the video, "Piwis vas 6154", and results were all over the place with devices ranging from $60 to $2000. Could you possibly point me in the right direction? I'm learning that I'll need something capable of resetting engine oil maintenance warning, PDK calibration, TC calibration... and who knows what-else-calibration lol. I'm used to vehicles where you change the fluid and that's it - no electronic apparatus required to tell the vehicle the fluid was changed! So this is all new to me. Thank you for your incredibly helpful videos and posts on the Macan forum.

You probably be better off getting a Otofix diagnostic tool. If you don’t intend to add and commission new modules, Otofix will be more than enough to do what you are asking. Most Otofix tools have ECU coding capability, as well as you will be able to do TC and PDK calibration. Otofix runs on Autel, and as a matter of fact is manufactured by Autel, but is cheaper and aimed to DIY’s rather than professional shops. Check: www.otofixtech.us

I just recently bought a 15’ Macan Turbo and plan on doing all maintenance and performance parts myself. I came across your videos when researching PDK fluid change. I’ve done a small amount of searching and I’m a bit lost on the best place to purchase PIWIS. I already have a laptop. Can I just buy the software and cable? Thank you! Awesome info.

Hey Santrix, thx for all of your wisdom here. I have an issue, after I changed the PDK oils of my 2017 Macan turbo, the calibration failed when I reached the "clutch bite point adaptation" all the other calibration procedures were carried out, but not this one. Now the car drives but doesn't keep much revs, even in Sport + mode when it reaches 4,000 RPM shifts to a higher gear, where before it used to keep the revs to 7K. For example, before, when driving in 7th gear in normal mode, when Sport+ was selected, it was dropping to 3rd gear, now it drops to 4th, so it doesn't feel as sporty. Any suggestions are much appreciated

Sorry to hear. When you do the clutch calibration, you are in essence resetting the PDK so it needs to learn your habits again. Hence, you will feel it a bit different. Just drive it the way you would want to for a while. I would just repeat the clutch bite point adaptation (this is really the only one you should do honestly, unless you have a PDK that is clunky)…. If it hangs up, repeat until it goes through. Is your PDK throwing any faults? If not, your PDK is fine. Thats about the only thing I can think of right now. EDIT: I just saw your post in MF. Of course the dealer is going to tell you that you broke your PDK, they want more money. But there’s no way you will break your PDK by performing calibration. Sensors tend to drift with time and wear, and with calibration you are just adjusting offsets to bring it back into tolerance.

@@porscheDIY Ah this is good to hear, and so much relief. And cool that you saw my post in MF 🙏🫡 I watched your videos and did the calibration myself, based on your instructions, after changing the four oils: 2 for the Gearbox, 1 for the Transfer case, and 1 for the rear differential. I also changed the two PDK oil filters. The PDK is not throwing any error codes; I just lost the sportines. I've tried to go through the Clutch Calibration about five times, and every time, it failed. So I gave up, but it's been a month since I did this, and the PDK still hasn't learned my driving habits. Maybe I should give it more time to learn or do you suggest that I try the calibration again until it goes through? By the way, your time and wisdom are much much appreciated; you are a savior. Thank you very much again 🙏🙏🙏
@porscheDIY
@porscheDIY 4 месяца назад
@@RossMinchev hmmm…. It should learn rather quickly. But the issue may be the interrupted bite point calibration. Do that again until it goes through. Do the independent bite clutch calibration only. And then, drive it so that it can learn….

@RossMinchev Also, watching the comments in MF reminded me of a question I had. What tool are you using for calibration? Is it PIWIS? Or are you using Autel or Launch? I have done the calibration with Autel with mixed results… it works better with PIWIS. I haven’t tried to do it with Launch, but the commented in MF reports not being successful with it.

hello, I have to make an adaptation for replacement of the torque splitter and new control unit. I have the piwis clone, Do you need to keep a charger connected or just keep the motor running?
@porscheDIY
@porscheDIY 7 месяцев назад
The procedure is fairly quick, and some of the procedure needs to be done with only ignition ON. If the battery is not sufficiently charged and voltage doesn’t meet the pre-requirements, it won’t allow you to proceed. And the procedures that requires ignition ON would not work with engine ON. In this specific case, there is no voltage pre-requisite, so you might be able to complete without a charger. Just make sure your battery is well charged.

Hey so I am new to Porsche and I am just wondering how do you create "VAL" I can't find any information on what it actually is. Thanks in advance.
@porscheDIY
@porscheDIY 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching, and welcome. Do you have PIWIS? Val Logs are created with PIWIS, and you can create them when you select a process (like an adjustment or calibration, the system will ask you if you want to create one), of by pressing F7 at Home Screen (Maintenance of Vehicle information). This will bring a menu that has the option to create a VAL log. A Val Log just records all your car parameters and values, for reference.

Look for me in the MacanForum (santirx) and send me a Private Message. Your best bet is to source a computer image for PIWIS 3 with known sources and source the VAS6154 from aliexpress.com. I can give you all references required. Especially if you have a computer with minimum requirements.
