In this episode of Know Your Porsche, we will look at the PDK oil change. This Porsche 981 Cayman has not had its PDK oil change since it left the factory.
How will the PDK oil condition be? How often should I change my PDK oil? These are the questions I'll be answering in this video.

UPDATE: The Blackstone Labs transmission oil analysis came back on the OE Porsche fluid on my 991, so I wanted to share it with the Porsche community. With 49,000 miles on the oil, the SUS viscosity @ 210 F was 48.0 (should be between 43 - 51), the cSt Viscosity @ 100 C was 6.67 (should be between 5.1 - 7.9) and flashpoint looked good at 395 F (should be greater than 335 F). However, there was iron in the oil, which is apparently normal as the PDK wears down (gears, bearings, shafts, some cases and clutch plates). Long story short, you can probably run the oil longer without any issues, but you might risk having the iron particles build up too much and cause issues. According to the analysis, these iron particles start showing up more after 29,000 miles.

Thanks for the video. I changed the PDK fluid on my 2014 991 at 49000 miles and was shocked how dirty the fluid and filter were. Since I was the second owner, I wanted the peace of mind of having this done and to help reduce the chances of a future PDK problem. I actually sent out the old oil for an analysis, but the results haven’t come back yet. Thanks again for the video.

Great video about a topic not covered enough. I’m about to spec a new Cayman with my dealer. When I do take delivery of it, I will certainly change the PDK oil every 25,000 miles. Maybe even every 20,000 miles. Thank you for the video!

@@ThePorscheLover The dealer I’m going through vehemently disagrees with changing motor oil or PDK oil earlier than the published schedule. I’m certain that you’re correct, but they are adamant that I’d be wasting my money. They say that Porsche knows what they’re doing when designing a car.

Well, if the PDK gearbox fails it's a bigger win for them as they get to charge you more 😂

What is your engine oil change interval? 5,000 miles? The scheduled 10,000 miles? Also, I love that you’re a watch guy. Very nice! Thank you

I do it every 5,000km actually, overkill I know but I do drive my cars hard 😂 Am guessing you're watch enthusiast too ? Do follow my Instagram (the same name) as I post more wristwatch shots/ videos there too 👍🏼

Thanks for the video and great work. I have a 2019 718 Boxster S and thinking of doing this soon even I'm still under 40K miles. QUESTION: So you only changed the filter in the oil pan and not the whole oil pan? Is that correct? How do you do that? Isn't it potentially dangerous? Has anybody had issues doing it that way? Also, have you ever replaced the plastic oil pan with a reusable Metal one, just replace the filter type? Some people have told me this is not a good idea. I've seem some plastic oil pans online from $50 to $500, any thoughts on the quality of any of the cheaper ones? What type of trans oil do you recommend, just Pentosin, or do you think Liqui Moly or Motul are better? Have you heard of their being a rear wheel alignment required after doing the trans service? Finally, what do you think about Liqui Moly products like the engine oil, or the Ceratec or the Pro Line Engine Flush, or any other products you can think of? Thanks a million and keep up the great work.

Wow, that's quite a few questions there. Let me break it down 1. the filter is built into the pan, so we replace the pan 2. No it's not dangerous 3. That's the way to do it 4. We replace it with an original Porsche part only 5. No we only use original, so no comments on aftermarket parts 6. We use original Porsche oil only 7. No, you dont need a rear wheel alignment for PDK oil change 8. we have never used Liqui Moly or Pro Line products, so we cant comment Thanks for watching!

It it noteworthy to point out the the new PDK filter unit needs to be screwed onto and torqued in a specific sequence and with specific torque settings. Also the temperature of the PDK fluid needs to be within a specific temperature window.....

What about placing a magnet in the oil? If there any metal pieces, the magnet should pick them up.
@ThePorscheLover
@ThePorscheLover 3 года назад
There are some German makes who has magnets in the pans for a long time. Why Porsche didn't install one in this 981, I'm unsure tbh. Only the boffins at Porsche can answer that 😆

Congrats! Is it your first Porsche? And my oh my, that's a very low mileage 981! Yup, I have actually made an earlier video on the 5 service items you should do for a used Porsche ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y4YnvZJlqIQ.html

@@ThePorscheLover Thank you for the video! Your tips are very helpful. And yes it is my first Porsche and a dream car of mine after seeing the 987 Cayman when I was very young. My family rarely drove this 981 after buying it so I jumped on the opportunity when they mentioned selling it.

how about tiptronic oil change
@ThePorscheLover
@ThePorscheLover 3 года назад
According to the workshop manual, Porsche recommends the Tiptronic oil to be changed every 12 years or 180,000km whichever comes first 😆

@dlee9174 2 года назад
Doesn't Porsche recommend 1. PDK clutch oil what you did in the video at 6 years? 2. PDK transmission oil at 12 years? What you showed at 12yr was the PDK transmission oil but actually changed the PDK clutch right? I'm just trying to get clarification.
@ThePorscheLover
@ThePorscheLover 2 года назад
Hi A huge majority of owners I have spoken to do not either renew their warranty once it has expired (and service outside) or sell their cars by then. Hence the PDK oil hasnt replaced when it goes to the second owner. Yup,that's right. The one changed is the PDK clutch oil.

Hey Adrian, notice that there are two types of PDK oil. PDK Transmission gear oil and PDK clutch oil. Did you service both? Btw where is this workshop?
@ThePorscheLover
@ThePorscheLover 3 года назад
Yup, that's right. There are two types of oil, the one replaced in the video is the PDK clutch oil & pan. Yes, we can replaced the oil for both & located in Glenmarie bro. If interested, do whatsapp me at 012-6730363 Adrian 👍🏼

@@ThePorscheLover The clutch interval is not 180K Km / 12 years. That is the gearbox. The clutch is 6 years. It is highly recommended not to do the clutch section without PIWIS.
@ThePorscheLover
@ThePorscheLover 2 года назад
Please refer to 1:07 of the video where I shared a screenshot of the recommended service interval. It states the recommend PDK oil (for both transmission & clutch) is 180,000km or 12 years

25k km mileage. seems too good to be true. either someone tampered with the mileage or the previous owner 6 days out in a week dapao inside garage.
@ThePorscheLover
@ThePorscheLover 3 года назад
Yup, like you pointed out there are cars with this mileage. Usually, garage queens. Can also tell roughly if that 25k is genuine by looking at the wear & tear parts e.g. thr brakes. Brake discs looks new, it means it's been changed meaning mileage is higher a, if it looks worn it also means mileage is higher.
