Peak Cavern, also known as the Devil's Arse is one of the four show caves in the Castleton , Derbyshire.
A popular tourist attraction thats known for its impressive limestone formations and its large cave entrance, the cavern has a rich history and has been used by humans for thousands of years.
It has served various purposes over time, including as a shelter for early humans, a place for rope making during the Industrial Revolution, and even as a concert venue due to its unique acoustic properties.
For a small fee tourists to Peak Cavern can explore its chambers and passages, learn about its history, and enjoy guided tours that provide insights into the geological and cultural significance of the cave.
Experienced cavers however can access its somewhat 18km of underground passages though prior arrangements.
Todays trip which would involve myself and other members of the Derbyshire based caving club 'Peak Caving Club' would be heading and ascending to 'Victoria Aven'.
This aven is a huge fault‐controlled shaft that towers above the Upper Gallery just a few meters beyond the end of Five Arches and the original show cave.
Victoria Aven is 75m high and upto 15m long. Extensive bolting operations in 1984 and 1985 led to two series of passages leading off from the north and south ends at the top, our plan was to ascend the aven and head through and down into 'George coopers aven' arriving at 'Echo Chamber'.

Peak Caving Club is a Derbyshire based caving club with members from all over the UK.
Our community (now over 1000 strong and growing!) welcomes both new and experienced cavers providing opportunities to learn, share and enjoy the underground spaces beneath our feet safely.
We host trips every weekend and plenty midweek around the Derbyshire area to keep our members busy.
There's also regular trips throughout the year taking us to hotspot caving locations across the UK such as the Yorkshire Dales, Wales, the Mendips and many more.
