I own a bunch of different PeakDesign products and the most useful for me is the tech pouch. I was initially skeptical that I even needed this but after purchasing it on a whim it is by far the best bang for the buck. It fits perfectly in my Everyday Backpacks, keeps all of my accessories organized and conveniently accessible.

Honestly this is super informative, being able to see it how it's like along with the travel backpack , even though I ordered the 35L I still can visualize how it will fit in that , thanks for the video!

If you've got the medium and small camera cubes in the pack (8.00) the Field Pouch fits nicely in the small space at the top.

This was a great review, I recently brought the packing cubes to go with my Kathmandu 38l Litehaul. I’ve been playing around and I’m trying to get under 7kg, I’m taking a drone and laptop so eating into weight. Would have been great to hear weights and how they affect over all travel requirements. Either way great video.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 4 года назад
Thanks, that's good feedback with the weight. I can see it being tough to stay under 7kg with that bag plus drone and laptop. Did you manage to do it?

I managed to get the medium packing cube and shoe pouch for a discount from a code PD sent me, so I'm happy with those purchases. The medium cube is just amazing but I do agree a little overpriced. You're paying for the design, materials, and convenience of it fitting perfectly into the Travel Backpack (though it isn't too hard to just find other packing cubes that can fit as well based on internal dimensions). The one thing with PD I wish they would work on is improving on their old designs a little bit more often. I get they're a smaller company that can't easily revamp their supply chain constantly, but for example their Everyday backpacks have done really well in terms of sales, but they have yet to address the single most common complaint of them which is the backpack straps, despite selling them for a few years now. Likewise I'm hoping they fix the issues that some of their products have, as I know they strive for perfection. Case in point: Your (rightful) criticism of their accessories. Their whole system of packing units is kind of negated when their tech pouch and wash pouch don't fit in a cohesive way. I feel that they need to redesign both or release a different version that is either smaller so that the two pouches now occupy one "unit" of space in the backpack, OR make them flatter, as if you compress the cubes there is a slight amount of flatter space left in the bag that is left unused. Hence why I am on the lookout for a similar quality and organizational style of the tech pouch, just in a flatter format. Likewise for the wash pouch.

Thanks for the comments, I'm actually posting a short video next week showing how to pack the Travel Backpack with some cheaper packing cubes. I totally agree on the Tech and Wash pouch. They would fit on top of the cubes, or in the front panel pocket, much better if they were shaped different, or flatter.

another great, no-nonsense review! I have used PD camera and tech accessories and often picture what their development meetings must be like. brainstorming well-produced and designed travel gear would be fun in my book! . .. but to carry over their aesthetics, weight of materials and cost to a toiletry bag or packing cube is just not for me... so without buying and experimenting you have solidified my belief... . patagonia even made some ballistic packing cubes, heavy and waterproof(ish).. recently I saw them on a markdown table at REI less than one year after their debut. I simply don't see the need for such weight in a clothing packing cube. for afordable and lightweight cubes my personal favourite is 'globite".. found in airport shops, some major cities and limited products on amazon...
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 4 года назад
Thanks Lidia! So true, their toiletry pouch is basically a mini version of the travel backpack! I really do like the PD packing cubes, they're really nice and work great, but $70 for the set is pretty outrageous. I'm also a fan of lightweight affordable packing cubes. So in the next week or so I'm going to do a packing demo of the Peak Designs Travel Backpack using a couple sets of Gonex cubes. They work really well with the bag, but they're both less than $20 a set.

What do you think is the best ICU for the Osprey Farpoint 40? I think I need a small one because my gear consists of just a Sony A73 plus 2 small lenses
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 4 года назад
I honestly don't know that much about ICUs. I've only tested a few of them. I have a Cannon M-50, but no extra lenses so I usually just use a small camera case. Those PD cubes are nice, but might be a little big for your Sony. You could try F-Stop cubes, they have a wide-range of sizes, one of them should work for you. (eg fstopgear.com/products/icu/shallow-icu-small)

For the wash pouch, I personally wish they made it to open fully. Having used my fair share of hostel bathrooms and showers, reaching into a pouch like that is super awkward. I've had one that opens fully and hangs off a hook with both halves easily accessible and I currently have one more like this one, although it is two compartments the front has a clear flap that also opens fully so I can easily access what is in that section. For all the things I keep in the back pocket, which opens like the Peak wash pouch, I can't access it from where it's hanging because I either reach in and make a mess digging out what I'm looking for, or I just have to take it down. But that's just my preference.

Hey do you think the bag would work for a personal item on a plane? Or just carryon only? Personal item is free but the carryon is like 40$ or so...
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 4 года назад
It depends on the airline, but probably not. The PD bag is 22x14x9", while most airlines personal size is much smaller, usually around 18x14x8". If you want to check I made a table of most airlines personal size, and carry on size limits: onebagtravels.com/personal-item-luggage-dimensions-updated-for-2019/ onebagtravels.com/carry-on-luggage-dimensions/

Thank you for this. I see you’ve done a review on the Osprey Porter 30. Do the Peak Design Packing cubes fit in it?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Год назад
Good question. I don't have the bag right now or I would test it out. In this video I put two 12x9 cubes in the bottom of the Porter, for a total of 12x18". The PD cubes are 12.6"x6.7" (small) and 12.6" x 12.6" (medium). Side by side, these would be about 12.6"x19.3". So about 0.6" wider, and 1.3" longer than how I packed the porter. Obviously the space the cubes take up depends on what you have in them. I imagine they would fit when packed full, but it would be very tight, and you may need to underpack the cubes slightly.
@Meanstoend
@Meanstoend Год назад
I did the test. A medium PD packing cube fits in the Porter 30. I packed it out pretty well and the sides are just fine in there. There is about 5 inches space left over as well.

What wash pouch do you recommend? I like the PD one in terms of layout, but it is pretty large and pricy.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 4 года назад
I agree, the PD one is nice but it's a little large and doesn't squish down well. I use the small Sea to Summit Hanging Toiletry Bag. I like it because it holds what I need to hold, has a hanger, easily compacts when not full, is lightweight (2.8 oz), and comes with a mirror. It's on sale for like $26 now too on their website.

So what made you change your mind one the PD packing cubes because I have seen you using them in the later videos. I have several cubes, been using the Nomatic compression ones lately, but been thinking on these PD's
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 3 месяца назад
They're a good size and fit a lot of my bags and I really like the clean/dirty feature. It's very convienent to just move your dirty clothes to the other side of the cube, keeps them separate and your cube is the same size. I'll switch out between the PD cubes and Eagle Creek compression cubes depending on the bag. Eagle Creek are longer so work better in bigger bags and they compress much better than PD cubes. PD comprssion only really works when you stuff a ton in them.
@KurtRWalker
@KurtRWalker 3 месяца назад
@@OneBagTravels Thank you for sharing the distinction, I have several brands of cubes. Been thinking about some PDs since the small and large look like they work well together and would work for my AER Tp2 and Tp3 small well. Interesting that the eagle creeks compress more, been using the Nomatic compression ones lately

How many days worth of clothes can you fit in the small packing cube?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 4 года назад
It really depends on the type of clothes you take, and where you're going. The small cube expanded is about 9.25 liters. If you're really minimalist, bring Merino wool clothes, and going somewhere warm, you could probably pack a week's worth of clothes in it. However if you bring thick bulky cotton clothes, and are going somewhere cold, you could probably only fit 1-2 days of clothes in there if you're lucky.

Did you know that Peak Design has a smaller version of their Wash Pouch? I recently purchased one in Sage for shorter trips and now prefer it to the regular Wash Pouch. There is no information or reviews on any website, including their own.

@@OneBagTravels I just purchased it in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The minute I saw it I grabbed it as I find the original Wash Pouch too big for most trips. It had no merchandising tags on it, just a simple paper tag, and no serial number so I contact support at Peak Design, and they emailed me one to register the product. There are a lot of posts about the size of the original Wash Pouch in which people wanting a smaller one with the same level of finish.

The whole idea of the cubes is to compress, not expand. In fact, you can’t fit the wash and tech pouches exactly because you didn’t compress the cubes.

There's a sweet spot, pack them a little full and they compress nicely, but too full and the zippers won't close. I think I had them too full =)

Not sure why you only emphasized how the packing cubes pack when fully expanded. I can pretty much guarantee you that I (and probably a few others) am absolutely going to compress the packing cubes before I pack out my bag. So as I continue to look for the right packing cubes, this video turned out to be a total waste of time.
