This is live recording from a Wintersun show at Hannover on 10.9.2017, on which I played as a fill-in drummer for Kai Hahto. On their Forest Tour I did total of four shows. Everything you hear is exactly as it was played and sang on the night we performed, there's zero edits or overdubs.
For this song I tried to maintain the feel of the song "static" and not to twiddle around with it too much, like I usually tend to do. :) As guitar and bass parts in this song are mainly pretty straight forward I wanted to give the song a little more air by "orchestrating" with the vocals and backing tracks with my right hand. The song features also overall somewhat re-composed drum parts by me.
To put it short.. I know, I could've performed 10x better. I have played these songs and these same parts a hundred times, hundred times more accurate, with hundred times better groove, than in true live conditions. But putting all these thoughts and the results into the context, I'm still 6 out of 10 pleased with the end result. :)
What I learned / can point out of this project:
- Wintersun is an awesome band and Jari Mäenpää is genius when it comes to musicianship and composing new music
- The band has overall very, very high level of professionalism from the technical side of things to the musicianship and have people with very nice personalities
- When at jamroom Wintersun needs to find a way to keep the focus on practicing, instead of outside-practice-activities :D
- When practicing for a demanding and time consuming project like this, always make a plan! Monitor yourself and stay true to yourself. Don't tell you it's ok if it's not. Constantly question yourself "how can I have better results".
- Before agreeing, always ask yourself at least twice, whether you can pull it off. Do not give up.
- Don't do it for the money. Do it for the challenge, for the people, music and emotional experience. :)
