The Rex Razor has by far the best knurling ever put on a razor. It's amazingly grippy without feeling uncomfortable. Great points on both razors.

Hi buddy, I am from India, have lived in multiple countries (including US) and wanted to share my $0.02. I completely agree with your point of supporting innovators and I would happily pay $250 for a Rex ambassador just to respect the innovation, even if there's an affordable knock-off available locally. Having said that, my experience has been that customs+shipping significantly increase the prices of imports. As such, if I buy a Rex, it'll easily cost me upwards of $400. I have bought ton of shaving supplies from US/UK and almost every time I end up paying close to double. Hence, as a consumer based in India, I'm comparing $70 knock-off with a $400 original. Most people will go for a $70 option (including me). Moreover, as an India, it also gives me an opportunity to support local manufacturers and give them an incentive to innovate and not just be copy cats. Either way, I love the amazing work you do and regularly follow your channel. Do keep making more amazing products!

The Flexi is not a "copy" of the Res Ambassador. Both razors are homages to the vintage Gibbs Adjustable razor. I have never heard anyone other than Matt indicate that the blade feel and range of aggression are similar between these two razors. Gibbs was the innovator here, not Pearl or Razor Emporium, or any of the other makers of Gibbs Adjustable homage razors. They are Entrepreneurs who by necessity engage in some serious Engineering, but the original design is uniquely French in origin, and pre-war. I have read many comments on forums by owners of the Rex Ambassador who claim that it is overly efficient, even at the lower levels, and that it has a high blade feel across the entire range of adjustment. I have not read a single comment in a forum to this effect in regard to the Flexi, once the cap alignment flaw was corrected. Pearl chose to make the top cap on the Flexi ambidextrous, rather than keying it to one side, as the vintage Gibbs Adjustable did, as the Rex Ambassador is, as the Parker Variant and Merkur Progress are. This decision by Pearl presented tolerance challenges that were not reliably overcome until the third variant of the Flexi came to market. The top cap alignment (canting) issue has been resolved. The closest homage to the vintage Gibbs Adjustable in terms of it's smoothness and it's broad range of adjustable efficiency is probably the replica made by Heritage Razor; but I have heard some user's state that the Pearl Flexi comes close to these qualities of the vintage Gibbs Adjustable, once you adjust to the fact that it weighs nearly twice what the vintage Gibbs Adjustable does.

I have Version 5 of the Flexi. The problems have all been resolved. The blade alignment is perfect at every setting and the top piece fits flush to the bottom piece. There is no play between the two. Awesome razor for the price. I also own the Rex and it is superb.

Today I received the Rex Ambassador for my birthday. I own many razors, including the R41, Tatara Muramasa, AsD2 and others. But I must confess that none so far had impressed me as much as Rex. I tried it at every setting and got incredible results. I came to the conclusion that it is a simply perfect machine and certainly represents the result of a timeless passion.

Firstly I love my Rex Ambassador, and my Envoy, and my Sovereign. I love my Razor Emporium revamped razors too. So I’m a big supporter of yours. But you keep saying how they took your design, and they clearly did, but you took the Gibbs adjustable design, it wasn’t a revolutionary design you created. I think it’s incredibly hypocritical to take these shots at their copying while you don’t credit the Gibbs.

Congratulations, I think it is very brave that you compared a copy of your own product in a very professional and polite manner. As a German I really appreciate overengineerd things and the Ambassador is one of them. I think there is little room for improvement except one thing: Is there any chance to get a surface hardened / kolsterized version of the ambassador so the razor will stay free of scratches?

I tend to not jump into a purchase (I do my research). There are a lot of people that use the Ambassador as their measuring stick. The more I researched, the more I realized I should try it out (and did). I also purchased a T2 and since returned it after comparing the two. Matt also nailed it on a great point; considering the fact that you will be able to use the razor for a lifetime, it really doesn't cost that much. It could be the last razor you ever have to buy.

I also think that there's a possibility that people will talk about the wrecks ambassador in 40 to 60 years as people talk today about the Gillette fat boy. I don't say that to take anything away from Gillette. I just think it's a quality built razor that people will talk about for generations

Hi Matt! After many years of being a face and head shaver, I decided to graduate from the training wheels of multi-blade shaving and move to DE razors. After reading several reviews and forums, the choice was clear, and I purchased the Rex Ambassador, SS stand, and travel case. I love how the entire Rex product line radiates mid-century luxury and style! Regarding your question about the beryllium copper that is used by Pearl corroding, it should develop an oxide tarnish that will passivate the surface. Regardless, I prefer to spend the extra money on the innovator, their vision, and charter.

I agree with you 100%. That being said I can't justify $250 on a razor. I could easily afford $250 for a Razor just as I could afford $250,000 on a sports car. However I'm not going to do either one. My 10 year old pickup truck and Gillette Fatboy is the route I'm gone. Plus I love the twist to open feature. I don't like two or three part razors.

I'm a proud owner of an Ambassador that I just bought this summer. I had the opportunity to try one in a passaround. While it's not my absolute best razor, there was just something about it that I did really enjoy. I saved up for 6 or 8 months to be able to buy one. There was a time when I would have gladly bought the less expensive copy, but over the past few years I've gained a new respect and appreciation for artists, entrepreneurs, and small business owners. I also respect your very Seth Godin-like decision on the razor. You could have made it cheaper by going outside the U.S. or using a different material, or skipping the warranty. I like that you sell it for what you believe is a reasonable cost, and didn't try to sacrifice what you wanted to make just to try and pull in a few more customers. If it's too expensive, that's unfortunate for you, but it just means this isn't the razor for you, and that's ok. It's people like us that buy razors like this. Way to be the bigger man and give an honest review.

I purchased a Rex Ambassador a few weeks ago and I love it. Before the purchase, I took a peek at the Flexi and the materials used in the manufacturing of this product, let alone the unevenness of the blade once the adjustment is turned up. Well, I decided to pass and decided to purchase the Rex. I can foresee the razor getting passed down to my son and remaining in the family for years to come.

Superb review Matt. I thought the conclusion was best summed up when you did the 'tip over' test😂 I absolutely get the fact not everyone can afford to spend $200+ and it is nice to have a cheaper alternative... This review would convince me to save up. Other than the unintentional slant issue, I thought what was quite telling was there being no natural drying option if the Pearl is upright and/or in the stand, so corrosion is inevitable. Nice job Matt. 👍

Completely agree with Matt. Support the innovator and ethical practices not the imitator. By buying the Rex Ambassador, you get the top quality luxury razor (best in class design, engineering, materials, manufacturing and customer support) but you also support innovation, and ethical manufacturing practices and labor practices as the razor is manufactured in US by people treated fairly and paid fair wages. As Matt stated, the first adjustable razor manufactured in the US since Gillette stopped, let that sink in for a second. By buying the Rex you are helping bring manufacturing back to the US and supporting US workers. PS: It's kind of a shame that Pearl shaving was not even capable of copying a design with proper tolerances. For those wondering, here we are 2 years later and @Heiko Shaves just purchased a Pearl Flexi and it has a faulty uneven blade gap, so 2 years later the issues are not fully fixed despite what Pearl Shaving communicates.

He did mention the warranty. He said there was a warranty, but he wasn't sure how long it lasted. The Rex is the better razor, period. It was designed from scratch, with higher quality materials, brass is not a superior material compared to stainless steel, both are good but stainless steel is more premium. That being said, the pearl is a great value for money razor, but saying its superior is quite laughable.

The 21st century is a time of low-quality, disposable things, because people have lost all taste and have ceased to be grateful. It is easier for them to buy again than to save what they have. Not to be critical, but if getting copied more cheaply was undesirable, why isn't the Rex patented? That's what the Patent system's for. (By way of comparison, consider Gaisman v. Gillette back in the day. Gaisman's patents brought down the Gillette marketing monster in the end.)
@RazorEmporium
@RazorEmporium 3 года назад
You can't patent an old design (adjustment mechanism) unless you improve upon it significantly. And even if you do get awarded a patent In usa, trying to enforce it may cost more than the matter is worth. Hard to enforce too with international companies.

 @RazorEmporium I am a Patent Attorney, and enjoyed your discussions about Valet Autostrop v. the Gillette New. I cannot give you legal advice, and this most certainly is not legal advice, but I can make broad brush observations about the patent system, and the two points you make, about obviousness and litigation costs, I've heard these two points many, many, times, and it's not that simple AT ALL. The best overarching guide is, whenever one comes up with something that seems really cool and that people will like, immediately talk to a capable patent attorney, and reliably explore the limits of the possible and advantageous, otherwise one might be generating self-inflicted harm. Btw, I notice on your webpage, that its logo has no copyright notice. (Woah!)

@@RazorEmporium I agree with your assessment about international enforcement. That would be a nightmare that would never end. You'd be better off using the lawyer expenses to lower the price of the Ambassador.
@edwardmiles6513

@@BartBuzz International enforcement is a whole additional level of complexity, and, of course relevant. But as a first cut, one can think about enforcing in the U.S. market against knock offs, imported or domestic. Again, consult your friendly local patent attorney right out of the box.

@@edwardmiles6513 The point here is that the Rex design is not original enough to be patented because it is mostly a copy of Gibbs or Personna adjustable razors.(original Gibbs patent expired many many years ago). And that's the reason why it is impossible for Matt to protect and enforce design rights in the US or in other parts of the world because he doesn't own this razor design. On the other hand if they would've tried to copy his logo or would've called their product Rex Ambassador that would've been another story.

I just started getting into shaving with a safety razor. I got the Henson (a great razor) with a milder blade format. Rather than start with the more expensive Ambassador, I went with the Pearl Flexi. While the Flexi gave a good shave, I notice the the milder Henson gave as close a shave as the Flexi on 3. That was a bit surprising. Also I don't think shaving side by side is the way to test the Flexi vs. the Ambassador. There is going to be a bias against the Ambassador because it's the more expensive product. The shave should be given by a barber with the person getting the shave blindfolded. They should then be questioned on how the felt being shave, which had the smoother shave both at the time of the shave and 8 hours later. I wonder how long the Flexi will last vs the Ambassador. Is there a way to do a torture test? Finally I'd do the same test vs. a non adjustable razor. I felt that the Henson gave me a much better shave than the Flexi. I'm not sorry I got the Flexi but wonder if I should have waited to buy the Ambassador.

What a gentleman, his razor design is ripped off by an imitator whose labour costs are peanuts and he manages to give an unbiased review. Here in the UK, the Ambassador sells for about £239 which is expensive, but once purchased it will outlive the original purchaser and is, therefore, a functioning heirloom that can be passed onto future generations, such is the quality of the Ambassador. At the minute I have the Envoy and I am that impressed I now intend to purchase the adjustable version, ie the ambassador. Great review and a superb product, quality are always worth a premium.

They’re exactly the same when broken down. It’s cool to be proud of something you created but it’s another thing to throw dirt on someone else based on how you feel about their resemblance to your product. That's like saying that no new car company has developed anything after Karl Benz created the internal combusion engine in the 1890's. When you take something and improve it, change the way its' made, the materials it's made of, the way it performs or assembles, you have innovated an old idea. That's what we did. Pearl did none of that and instead copied our improvements. Big difference.

@@RazorEmporium I wouldn’t say they outright copied your razor completely. What they accomplish is making a brass razor that is affordable for people who can’t afford a made in USA all stainless adjustable razor. As for the HS Taiga, having the ability to change the base plate from a closed to an open comb can also be considered innovative given what you said about the combustion engine. Not tryna sound like a hater cause that’s not what this is, but I think competition is good and in the end we, the consumers, win from y’all shooting it out and trying to make a better product. Props given for making an adjustable slant, as I’m really looking forward to trying that out in the future. All the best!

I respect your philosophy, and an not trying to argue the point, but I could see where people (like me) who have limited funds but want to support USA manufacturers would be drawn to a scaled down version. Maybe a brass version (not as nice, but as you said, Gillette has already done this) would be a good way for people to support the innovators, buy American, and still have a lower price point. I mean, no one says Ralf Aust razors are bad because they aren't Max Sprecher prices. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't mind paying for quality, but some of us are happy to get a nice product (with fewer bells and whistles), but honestly feel a price pinch at the over $200 mark. If you could offer quality, but maybe something with a limited warranty (maybe reduced but not free repair costs or something?), there may be a market that you could reach without compromising your philosophy.

Matt I don't think Pearl or any imitators make you look bad. It's all about buying power. Everybody is aware of material, tolerances or workmanship differences, but there is no solution to it. US is a well developed country with its money is highly valued, and its citizens' prosperiy is exceptionally well whereas there are a lot of underdeveloped countries with poor welfare. For example in my country monthly minimal wage is 216 dollars right now. Hard to believe I know, someone with 2k salary of course would happily pay for Ambassador. But would you able pay more than a month of you income for a razor? No, I guess. Not even for an iphone right? So thats the situation for most of well developed countries right now. Their money is so valued they will have a lot of problems exporting their products. No matter how good or better made they are. It is an Era to make affordable products that will sell a lot to be able to stand on your feet. Because a handful well developed countries makes the remaining world countries poorer day by day either by some apparent or devious ways. Ok, done with my political ranting, I think Ambassador is a great product but also kudos to Indians to imitate such a complex product that well. I wish they had been more innovative and authentic with their designs.
