Except for the fact the b25 wouldnt have bombs that big. They were likley 500lb bombs. The explosions were highley exagerated on a individual bomb.

Not only that but it forced Japan to keep hundreds of fighters at home to defend the home islands that otherwise would have been sent across the Pacific to fight. And the boost to morale for the allies at that moment, which had seen only defeat after defeat to both Japan and Germany was immeasurable.

The main damage was one bomb in the gardens of the imperial palace. For the japanese HQ it was a loss of face unbearable. So they change plans and decided to expand the security area at the east of Japan. The best way to do this was to take a group of small islands... Midway... the rest is history!
@superspies32
@superspies32 2 года назад
Actually it has very strong impact because Japanese government confused about their takeoff location. So they assumed it was Midway and bring their main fleet from India Ocean to Midway. The fleet was decimated later.

0:44 , this scene right here growing up is what got my interest peaked in Japan during WWII. Hearing so much about the victories, strategies and machinery of the Americans always left me wondering about those of the enemy, since America seemed so interested in learning about their enemy's aforementioned items during the War too. Everything from life in Japan to the frontlines at Tenaru. It was this scene that inspired my 9 year old self to get into Japan in WWII. I credit a lot to this because if I hadn't of discovered this, I never would have formulated so many essays, collected so many curios and never would have owned Japanese weaponry. Every time I watch Pearl Harbor, I always have to appreciate this scene; just a few short seconds of seeing two sides of the War in one shot.

@momo chi Yes, many war crimes were committed during ww2 by everyone, especially Japan and Germany. Except they weren't legally war crimes yet as the Geneva conventions weren't until 1949, 5 years after the end of ww2. Instead they were called crimes against humanity and many were charged with that after ww2 ended.

I would add Battleship just bc is a fun movie with a Iowa-class battleship, and Midway 2019 were we can actully see how the battle occured for both sides, with the USN sending wave after wave to block any counter attacks from the IJN carriers, while keeping the dive bombers for last has they were the only way they had to destroy the carrier has this was a big gamble done by the USN commander, in order to hit the enemy carriers on their most vulnerable state, and the gamble was indeed pay back almost fully, even if the Akagi was hit by 1 bomb it was enough to doom the entire carrier and prevent any very dangerous counter attack from this one single carrier that had expert pilots both torpedo and bombers, and the USN didn't had a lot of ships to provide much more need AA to protect the carriers, but what they add was enough, since Yorktown took all of the attacks while keep her sisters safe from any damange and danger. Their bombs didn't do that much damage and they were gone before the Japanese defenses could react. Several flights of Japanese aircraft sighted Doolittle's planes, but didn't react or report the sightings. The Japanese assumed the raiders were American naval aircraft and went eastwards from Japan to look for the aircraft carriers that launched them.

There are different types of victories and this was a huge boost morale that the US needed after Pearl Harbor. It also proved that Japan was vulnerable to attack, which they had claimed was impossible before the Doolittle raid.
@hungryowl1559
@hungryowl1559 Год назад
It wasn't about damage. It was about sending a message. Because of this raid Japan had position its forces differently in order to account for a surprise United States Raid. Meaning other operations were possible/easier because their full force couldn't be brought to bear.

I know the director and producers said not to expect historical accuracy--and there wasn't a whole lot. But the Doolittle raid was not as shown here. There was no formation--that would have used up too much fuel. Each plane took off, circled once and passed right over the flight deck which was pointed toward Tokyo. Each plane was on its own at that point. One plane, _The Ruptured Duck_ was almost pushed overboard by the deck crew when Captain Lawson had difficult starting the port engine. A good book on the preparation, the raid, and the return home, is _Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo_ , available from various sources.

Doollittle Raid used B25B, with the dorsal turret near the tail. In the film they used b25J, with the turret near the cockpit. No formation, there was no fuel nor time to get together. Damage was minimal and japanese reaction was not so strong. Most of the losses came from bad weather on China Sea. The effect of the raid went far over the material damage, it diverted resources to defend japanese mainland. The film was a fiction with some point of contact with history. And, to me, not a great film. If someone are curios about the raid, read "Thirty Seconds over Tokio", by T. Lawson. He was there. Wonderful book.

In real life, the Doolittle Raid didn't do as much damage as seen here. Unlike the real raid, this shitshow has the bombs raining down on literally the entire Tokyo industrial complex, accurately blowing up factories and steel mills with one shot. There's also the fact that the B-25's did not fly as low as portrayed, and not in squadrons but in individual groups towards single targets, a mockup Type 96 AA gun being used instead of a real one, no Ki-61 Hien fighters trying to jump the bombers, and the B-25 somehow instantly teleports to China to crash land shortly after previously being over Japan. Even Midway's Doolittle Raid scene did better than this.

They had actually gotten a tail wind after they bombed Tokyo that helped them make it to China. Many planes were able to make it with fuel to spare, divine intervention for sure on that one because they estimated that the fuel they had would still make them 100-200 miles short of China. One of the planes had to divert to Russia because of antiaircraft fire and being pursued by Japanese fighter planes.

japanese werent stupid they knew this dumbass mission could and would not be repeated because losing all your bombers everytime for minimal damage is a fools errand. no way this bothered them especially since they were not afraid to die anyways.

The Doolittle raid wasn't meant for wide spread damage it was to let the Japanese know they weren't invulnerable on their home island, which they thought was untoucable, the americans arent idiots, they knew wut they were doing. And rightgully so after dozens of their cities were reduced to rubble, and ofc the 2 atom bombs.

Considering it's computer graphics, you would have thought that they would have used the correct model B-25 for the raid, the B-25B. The one shown in the movie looks more like a B-25H, a much later model.

Good way to put it because that was exactly right. It takes a modern nation about 2 years to get fully ramped up into war production and once the U.S. war machine finally got to it's peak the Japanese and the Germans had no chance. By the end of WW2 the United States was producing half of all industrial output of the human race on Earth.

0:04 What the hell is with the altitude? Didn't they know that they consume sooo much more fuel on low altitude? On the other side, it doesn't matter since the bombers will be riddled with shrapnels from their own bombs exploding.

Great movie. One thing I noted, there was no connection between Japan and Republic of China. A lot of these planes ran out of fuel and had to crash landed in Republic of China. From the point of view in this movie, they almost made it look like the planes were crashed inside Japan right after the raid.

Yep every film got that wrong just like the recent Midway movie they even got gunpacks at the side which is a later versions of a b-25 strafer. I have only observed what they got right is that they have used a customize bombsight that cost only 20 cents. The most accurate movie of the Doolittle raid was the Thirty seconds to Tokyo.

A Japanese submarine was sunk on Christmas Eve in 1941 by 5 men who went on the raid off the coast of Oregon by the Columbia river. This is the only combat experience the Raiders had. The first strike was less than 500 feet. The second pass, parts of the sub struck the plane. They were not awarded medals until after the war so as to not alert the public that the subs were so close to our homeland.
