The motivation for Jeremy points back to a true, disturbing story which took place in 1991…The incident occurred in January of 1991, when Jeremy Delle arrived at Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, with a gun. Delle then shot himself in front of his fellow students due to incessant bullying from his classmates. According to an article in The Dallas Morning News, “Because he had missed class, the teacher in his second-period English class told Jeremy to get an admittance slip from the school office. Instead, he returned with the gun, police said. He walked directly to the front of the classroom. ‘Miss, I got what I really went for,’ he said, then placed the barrel in his mouth and fired.” Vedder read the article and was inspired to tell the story of Jeremy Delle in song. He wrote “Jeremy” and the song was an instant hit. The video was met with a great deal of controversy.

Hi guys! It's a quasi true story. Eddie wrote it after seeing an article about a kid named Jeremy Wade Delle, who killed himself in front of his english class. He also combined some details from another article about a similar situation and added some slight artistic interpretation.

@@gcarap Well, as far as I am aware, the parents being distant and not paying attention to him is also not quite true, although that heavily depends on his personal perspective and how he felt. And his classmates said he was not bullied, just a shy, quiet kid and crazy talented artistically.

@dirtyhistorian just because his class mates didn't see him bullied, doesnt mean it didn't happen. Unfortunately too many teenagers commit suicide. However, Jeremy wade delle doing it in front of his class, he was sending a message, he was having the last say. It's bullcrap he wasn't being bullied.

“Jeremy” won numerous awards when it first came out. In the 90’s, Pearl Jam backed away from a lot of typical promotional activities, for sanity’s sake, so they didn’t make many videos. And when they finally made another, in 1998, to the song “Do The Evolution”, it was brilliant. Would love to see you react to it (have lyrics handy if you do). Fully animated by Todd McFarlane (who worked on “Spawn”), with lyrics by Eddie Vedder, it’s a brutal look at the evolution of humanity. And it’s one of their greatest songs.

The Nazi salute scene relates to the lyrics "King Jeremy the wicked ruled his world". The scene is Jeremy's fantasy just like the intro lyrics about, painting pictures of mountain tops and the dead lay in pools of maroon below. I remember when this first released on MTV when MTV was worth watching. I was 8 years old and I can't believe it has been 31 years now.

I'm really surprised how many Americans get confused by the so called "nazi scene". It's the pledge of allegiance. I thought it was something everyone did over there, but apparently not everywhere, or anymore maybe. I'm not American, but I know I have seen it in American movies. You can just look up Pledge of Allegiance on Wikipedia, and see pictures of kids holding out the arm while doing the pledge.

MTV made them take out the part where Jeremy put the gun in his mouth (censored version). There was some confusion at the time that maybe he shot the class because they had blood on them in the final scene. The uncensored version wasn't released until 2020 for National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

The German salute ( not Nazi) was used by Mussolini prior to Hitler ( fascism). Used in the USA commonly in schools prior to WW2. Called the Bellamy salute, named for Francis Bellamy who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance.

I always interpreted the salute imagery as a critique of the school system being kind of restrictive and authoritarian, students are under a lot of pressure to conform, whilst at the same time their wellbeing is not really cared for. Also as someone not from the US it's super weird how you have to recite the pledge of allegiance in school - from the outside that looks super cultish or something!
@mitchellbeston1033

I'm not from the US but i think a pledge of allegiance is nothing but positive. Why shouldn't a citizen show their support for their nation? Once upon a time in Australia, we would sing the national anthem at school assembly each morning but of course those who despise our nation, yet enjoy its freedoms, have progressively talked our nation down to the point where citizens feels cowed into accepting that our nation is not a good one so such displays of unity are now frowned upon. Having grown up in another country, and experienced that the grass is not even close to being greener on the other side, such fools have no idea how lucky they are.

How old are you guys? You seem of the age that you'd remember Pearl Jam and the whole Seattle Grunge movement - but maybe I'm just old. Anyway, have you thought about doing some of the other Grunge bands - Nirvana, Alice in Chains, or Soundgarden? For Alice in Chains I'd start with Them Bones, Soundgarden start with Outshined, and Nirvana start with School (Live at Reading 1992).

I think the Hitler thing is about his perceptions of the world around him. Childhood trauma leads to a lot of warped perceptions but the biggest one is feeling separate from your peers and very anti authority. So Hitler was a fascist authoritarian. As someone else said this is loosely based on true stories, one of the true parts is that the real Jeremy and other anti social school shooters usually see the people around them as following mindlessly like the Nazis followed Hitler. Pearl Jam did an amazing job bringing a lot of understanding to the cause of some of these situations. Now if only we could learn. Another good one like this is "pumped up kicks".

The Bellamy salute is a palm-out salute created by James B. Upham as the gesture that was to accompany the American Pledge of Allegiance, which had been written by Francis Bellamy. It was also known as the "flag salute" during the period when it was used with the Pledge of Allegiance. Bellamy promoted the salute and it came to be associated with his name. Both the Pledge and its salute originated in 1892. Later, during the 1920s and 1930s, Italian fascists and Nazi Germans adopted a salute which was very similar, attributed to the Roman salute, a gesture that was popularly believed to have been used in ancient Rome.[1] This resulted in controversy over the use of the Bellamy salute in the United States. It was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute when Congress amended the Flag Code on December 22, 1942.

@@Bobba666audio what does that have anything to do with why Pearl Jam put it in the video? It doesn't. My comment is called relevant. Stop being an arm chair history teacher. If you want to talk about the song, lets talk. If you want to talk about the video, sure. I do not care where the salute came from just what it represents.
@Bobba666audio
@Bobba666audio Год назад
@@milissaleatherwood6837 Sorry, i did not wanted to be a arm chair history teacher :) Regarding the song, you refer to Hitler, but I wanted to tell that it was more likely that Pearl Jam is refering to the Bellamy salute. A salute to the flag. If you see in the orginal video, Jeremy has the American flag around him at 3.00 min. And in the class where all is giving the salute at 3.37, The American flag is on the wall behind, and Jeremy is the only one without white shirt doing the salute. I think this could mean that so many people don't really understand what they believe in and are following. Like I guess it could be political, religious, or whatever but so many times people are forced to believe or act a certain way and be forced into things that they don't understand or don't believe in. But, since Jeremy isn't shown giving the salute i think it means he felt different than other people and didn't follow the crowd, sort of a "rebel in society" i suppose.
