The first time i finally got to see them when i was kid in 1998, they opened with this. They have most frequently tended to open with a ballad as a sort of palette cleanser ease in, but this was a show was a show they came punching out of the gate. lights went down that riff opens, lights kicked on when that intro drum fill and jeff ament did this massive jump to the front of the stage into a crouched lean back pose and i remember going "holy sh*t....this is real. i'm finally experiencing this" (they had been my favorite band since 93 when VS came out and i had been listening to them since Ten). This song isn't even in my top 25 of their catalog, but that will forever be a top 3 live moment for me being at a concert.

Good review. I figured you’d love this track as soon as you heard it. When I listen to Spin the Black Circle, so do my neighbors.

They are a super versatile band, this is their 3rd album and when they started experimenting. Their 4th No Code was even more so, and not well received by critics, but I felt was awesome because they didn’t try to repeat themselves over and over. They have rockers, but they have done punk, blues, folk, pop, and just a lot of crazy things I don’t even know how to categorize; maybe you could. Enjoyed the review keep it up bro.

As a punk music fan MAYBE I LOATHED this song because it had the feel of punk and NOT typical PJ, BUT you nailed it, this is more polished, NO mistakes and I am looking back now and questioning my reasoning for not liking this one back in the day... It WAS a punk feel BUT no f@#k ups... My ears more than likely picked that up and was being biased without my knowledge! lol

Cool back story to this song. Stone Gossard came up with the riff and Eddie was listening to it on tape and sped the recording up and asked if they could play it at this speed instead. Hard to imagine this song being slower, I'm curious how it originally sounded.

Glad you really enjoyed this one. This song won the 1994 Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. Gotta love a song about playing vinyl. Another punk track you will definitely like is their live cover of the Ramones' I Believe in Miracles. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Nlw6Sqkr-7M.html I think Blood, Habit, Mind Your Manners, and the Whipping have similar vibes. Maybe also Leash. Another sound of theirs that you haven't covered yet is represented by songs like Do the Evolution and Worldwide Suicide.

Back in high school I used to blast this song in my Camaro with the t-tops off. Sometime around 2000-2001, Pearl Jam released a bunch of live albums - full concerts from their tour. I had the one from the Saratoga show and they did this song. Sounded amazing

Nice review! I've always appreciated this song as a tribute to vinyl. The whole band as noted below are such fans of multiple genres which leads to a breadth of creativity. The fans that could never get beyond "Ten" never quite got this sadly. BTW -- All those offshoot videos that I've sent you are huge influences on PJ. AND, I've have had to take music out of my car because it made me too "aggressive".

You should check out Lukin (Pinkpop 2000) vs Lukin II (slow Lukin) 5.21.10 New York, NY. The first one is in it’s original format and is quick punk type song, but the stripped down version is a little haunting. Great review 😁

Every time this song ended back when I listened to this album back in the day I THANKED whatever god was out there this song ENDED! I LOATHE this song!!! I expect this from an early 80's punk band, NOT what I listen to PJ for, and I LOVE punk, LOVE it, BUT again, I listen to PJ NOT for a punk sound UNLESS I want covers they do. Any punk band this would be a sweet song, for a PJ, imo it's a POS and I LOATHE hearing it! lol Though 20 yrs later since last listening to it, it doesn't hurt my hears as much for a PJ song I must admit, maybe with age my view may be changing lol

i've come to the conclusion that vs. and vitalogy are the best albums in human history... fucking love how eddie sings his lungs out in most of his songs.... solo or no solo... in the end song writer and vocals hold the entire song together which make you feel something..

Ok a RARITY here for me... I HAVE to say rehearing this song after nearly 20 years AVOIDING it due to hating it... Well I NO longer LOATHE it! Ok still NO where close to a top 30 PJ song BUT yeah, I CAN see myself listening to this song now and enjoying it for what it is, NOT a typical PJ song :) Thanks for changing my view David by doing this video!

I was always a Nirvana guy and hated Pearl Jam's Ten. But songs like this sounded like Pearl Jam trying to write a Nirvana song and I loved it lol there are others like it on Vitalogy and Vs... After Teen Spirit exploded that was just the vibe of the time. To me, It seemed like Pearl Jam genuinely agreed with Kurt Cobain's criticism of early Pearl Jam and they definitely changed their sound to more of a raw punk thing (with polished production) after Kurt eviscerated them in the press in 1992. I think they respected him and took it to heart.
