O.k.....HOPEFULLY this one won't get blocked....if it does, I'll add it to my new Patreon page. This one came heavily requested by a number of folks. Today I am Reacting and Reviewing a live performance from Pearl Jam. This one is Porch, from PinkPop '92. I keep hearing about what a "high energy" live band they are...so far I haven't seen a lot of energy from the band as a whole. But everyone keeps telling me "DH, if you really wanna see their live energy, you gotta watch them perform Porch at PinkPop '92". Sooooo, here we are, ready to experience the magic.
Come on in, enjoy the show...I'll see you inside.

Just for clarity. Pearl jam has never played two sets the same. Different set every night. Most of their fans hit multiple shows a tour. They travel to and from all over the world to see them. The only band I know of where people travel so far to see them and rarely only go to one show a tour. In 03 they played 3 shows in Boston and played 95 different songs. Only one repeat. Also within hours of the show you can buy the digital bootleg from their website. Every show since 2000. Its always a great experience at a pearl jam show and most of us actually go for the songs that we havent heard yet. It's mostly about the music we love so much. We wouldn't care one bit if they stood in one place the entire time and just played.
@jmhaces
@jmhaces 3 года назад
That's very true. Back in like 2003 or so I saw them three nights in a row and, though they did repeat some songs, for all intents and purposes the three shows were completely different concerts. Even the opening act played somewhat different sets. Every other time I've seen them live over the years it's been a different set regardless of whether or not it was during the same tour, and as you said, every live album you listen to is also really different and that's just the "official" releases, let alone the bootleg series. Hell, not only the sets vary but the actual versions of the songs can also be very different from one night to the next in the same tour.
@Deadmarsh81
@Deadmarsh81 3 года назад
While they have released most of their shows since 2000 it's not every show. 2004 and 2007 tours have not been released by them. And there some other exceptions here and there, but those are usually some kind of non-regular performances and part of the tours per se.

Re the “critique” moment at the end: I’d been watching this clip for years before I finally realized what happened when Jeff sits after the song ends: In the closing seconds of the song, just before Ed’s primal scream, he swings the mic a la Daltrey, which he was prone to do frequently at this point in their career - except it sure seems like he accidentally hit Jeff in the head with it! You see him get ready for the swing, with Jeff nearby, then the camera cuts away to the crowd. You hear the “thump thump thump,” then the camera cuts back and Jeff is holding his head. So the “critique” moment, I think, is Jeff sitting down for a sec because he just got clobbered in the head! You even see Jeff make a spinning motion with his hands when Mike comes over to check on him (awww friendz).

The whole concert is basically this level of energy. Oh and they covered Rocking in the Free World after this as an Encore. That's a good one as well. Why Go is my favorite of the set. The bass player jumps too hard, falls and plays on the ground. Pretty good stuff.

It would not have occurred to me that Eddie was merely just standing there (although he wasn't at the start of the song) on the account of his intense facial expressions. :)

I was laughing so hard when you were talking about Eddie not doing anything at the beginning. They always went crazy during Porch. There are plenty of other performances where Eddie is swinging from the lighting rigs and climbing the speaker stacks. Trust me, this wasn't that nuts. For call and response I second It's Ok. For crowd singing, Better Man MSG 2010. As for the music/performance aspect there has to be a balance. Most PJ fans are there to hear the music and some songs are detracted from if they are over performed. Eddie especially, but the rest of the band too, often sound better live because of emotion, changes from the recorded version and dynamics that somehow don't come through in the recording. I think people would be disappointed if they didn't get that because the band were too busy performing to play the music.
@THEDavidHeretic
@THEDavidHeretic 3 года назад
Oh of course I completely agree with you, there has to be a balance between performance and execution. I'm just saying that bands should be willing to put on a great stage performance, and not focus so completely on playing every single note perfectly so much that they shoegaze and stand on stage like a bunch of trees. Obviously they should do their best to play the songs correctly, but people pay money for the live experience. If the band isn't going to put on a great show, and just focus completely on playing every single note exactly how it sounds in the album...then folks should just save their money, stay home, and listen to the CD or digital copy. No no no trust me I completely agree with you, that balance must absolutely be there, and I was thrilled to see Pearl Jam have that balance in this performance. Thank you for watching, hope you enjoyed the show. DH.

The unplugged version of this tune was the reason for me to say “this will be the band of my life”, 29 years ago And if you want to see perfection in stage, go see Radiohead or The Cure. I'm waiting on something so you're stuck with me again. I read a comment somewhere that said "while other singers were doing heroin, Eddie was doing Crossfit". Made me laugh a bit and then feel sad. It may be kind of true in that Eddie just channeled it differently. This video as you already know is just one of many epic adventures that must have terrorized his band mates. 🙂

What other singer climbs a camera rig, jumps into the crowd, climbs back up and still hits sustained long notes. The only reason they were still on the stage is because Jeff got whacked by the mic. Otherwise they wouldn't have done that. This was new to them. They had never played a festival before and they were not the headliners by a mile. I, for one, would not want to be the band following them. 😲
@THEDavidHeretic

I actually would love to follow them, for that VERY reason. I'm very competitive by nature, and I love it when I'm pushed to do better than the last guy. One of the many reasons that this is the only band that I will board a plane to see, every show has a totally different set list- they make songs that aren’t “radio hit” become a favorite. As for call and response, they didn’t do a lot of that in the beginning, but he does a lot of it now, hell, the fans even provide the backup singing for some of the songs.
@THEDavidHeretic
@THEDavidHeretic 3 года назад
Yeah I saw the call and response in the Corduroy video, really well done too. It's a learned skill, back in '92 he probably wasn't comfortable doing it yet, especially in front of a crowd that size. I’m sure it’s on your list of to do’s...Pearl Jam Black Unplugged Live. Obviously not going to be a high energy show as the unplugged series is supposed to be a low key subdued feel. Their performance of Black may be the closest thing to perfection at a live show. Me? I’d rather listen to the unplugged live version over the studio recording. While you’re on the mtv unplugged kick, get after Nirvanas unplugged version of “where did you sleep last night (also known as In the Pines)” It was never a Nirvana song but best known by Leadbelly. As a musician, I hope you’re familiar with Leadbelly. If not, tick tock! Some say that Kurt Cobain left his soul on the stage at the end of this song. He died shortly after the performance.

I love the energy of this performance, and it’s great to watch, but musically it’s one of my least favorite versions of Porch (and still awesome!). They did one more track after Porch at that show. Eddie used to do a lot of stage diving. That all stopped after the Roskilde festival in Denmark in 2000 when the crowd stampeded and 9 concert goers were trampled to death. It really shook the band. They have talked about the tragedy a lot, and wrote the song Love Boat Captain about it. I’m glad you are enjoying your PJ tour. Those that want you to review Black from MTV unplugged are on the money. The MTV unplugged show was beginning to end great and is being rereleased next week. I just got my copy in the mail from the preorder from the Ten Club. Also, as commenters have noted PJ have NEVER played the same set twice. They were chatting on the side of the stage because Jeff Ament hit his head and they wanted to make sure he was ok.

@@THEDavidHeretic agreed...i will say this: this is a high-tempo song from the start. as a former vocalist, i can attest to this: they're playing even faster live than on record...and he's having an issue keeping enough oxygen in his body to sustain a good vocal performance. on other songs i'm sure you've seen him get NUTS again & again. actually you see it here, don't you? but yeah, singers sometimes have to TIME their activity unless they're willing to sacrifice some quality. a great example of this ethic is with the now-defunct band Fair to Midland: their singer Darroh was one of those TOTALLY about getting all the way into the live performance bit, even when it hurt the quality of his vocals. he's an amazingly skilled vocalist, but he did all these other things while trying to sing (starting with drinking, plus climbing lighting tresses etc., running and flopping around, etc). it hurt their live performances at times. doesn't make him a worse singer, but it SOUNDS like it. so eddie choosing to BREATHE during the early moments of the song that's NOT giving him many pauses in which to catch his breath.

I hadn't. I avoided Pearl Jam like the plague prior to starting this channel....and the only reason I even started with Pearl Jam is because it was requested by my brother of all people, who is a die-hard Pearl Jam fanatic. Honestly I hadn't seen that video until I saw it for the first time doing this reaction.

I was there about 50 meter away from stage and this jump changed my live for good...now 28 years later I got pearl jam tattoos and a son named Jeremy. I've seen manny concerts and festival s but Pinkpop 92 pearl jam was unforgettable. 2 best...rage against the machine Pinkpop 93 check that out as well. Check this as well...interview after this concert...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w-gmaO4qw2s.html

this band is so dramatic..ppl agree and disagree but they who disagree cannot find anything magical so powerful and natural like this, tell me just one band with powerful youth energy like this..even heaviest metal bands dont hv anything like this, heavy, powerful, natural, beautiful, and dramatic..

Sorry, one more request I’d love for you to add to the list. Jack White on Saturday Night Live just a week ago. He was asked at the last minute (about two days out) to fill in. Nobody would’ve criticized him for a substandard performance with little prep time but ends up with the best SNL performance I recall in many years. If you appreciate guitar play...which you clearly do, this is a must. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bhN4M4aS50U.html

Bass player was injured. Eddie spin the mic accidentally hit him at the end of the song. They’re not discussing the show, just making sure he’s okay cos he’s bleeding

Pearl Jam was a different band with Dave Abbruzzese. I stopped listening after they kicked him out. They went from kicking ass to artsy folksy boring cover band.
