Pearl SSH-01 Open Comb Safety Razor compared to the Muhle R41. First use of the Pearl and opinion.

Following s request from a RU-vid subscriber, I am trying for the first time the Pearl SSH-01 Safety Razor, and comparing the shave to a Muhle R41 shave. Both razors are open comb type and give a very close shave. The Pearl is about the same size as a Merkur 34C or 37C, weighing about 2.5 oz.
The Pearl feels a little less aggressive than the Muhle, let's see how it does.

This morning I shaved with this razor for the first time using a Wlkinson blade. It was a 2 pass bbs shave. Not only does it give a close shave but it is one beautiful razor. Definitely going in my regular rotation.

very smooth and little blade feel for an open comb. this is the only open comb I'd feel comfortable putting a really sharp blade in, definitely gonna be in my weekly rotation

Thanks for your videos - I enjoy watching them. I ordered a Pearl Safety Razor Open Comb - SS 03 thanks to this video. Luckily I found it locally in Australia. It'll be my first transition to DE razor shaving (from Gillette Power Fusion). Ordered 110 Wilkinson Sword blades from India for AU$10, and some sample blade packets from Sweden - Astra green, Rapira, Voskhod and Feather. Omega Shaving brush, Proaso Sandalwood Red Pre-Shave Creme and White Proaso aftershave balm. Wish me luck!

@@kensurfs/videos The Pearl 3-piece is great because it's aggressive enough - bought online from a store in Australia but this particular model doesn't seem common. I like the Voskhod blade but have yet to try Rapira, Feather and Wilkinson Sword 'saloon' blades. Bought "L'Oréal Men Expert Barber Club After Shave Balm" cedarwood scent aftershave balm for $7 - I like that better than the White Proraso aftershave balm which irritated my eyes.

Thank you Ken for the great review. I have an open plus close comb variant of pearl L-55. Works amazing. Would suggest you to see if you have Pink woolf shaving products available over there. Amazon has it. Really want you to try especially their soaps. Sandalwood in particular. Amazing slickness and can give run for a money to any luxury soaps around.

FFW 2020, I bought a Pearl razor, comes w OC and CC from Amazon $18. OC is good, I would say similar shave to a Fatip. I guess the head is Zamak instead of bronze in the Fatip. Haven't tried the CC (I don't care much for those). Must admit I used a Muhle topcap as I read Pearl might load blade crooked and I don't want to play w it.... It's an interesting device, shave was good. Blade: Personna Israel

Hi Ken. Great video as usual. I can usually buy Williams in a grocery store for about $1 or $1.25. Stores seem to carry it for awhile and then it disappears and shows up again later. My local veterans hospital always has it for $1 in their store. Take it easy.

Hi ken. You can get pearl razors here in NZ. I haven't tried them as such, they do a neat travel razor that breaks down to nothing for easy travel storage. It's way cheaper than the merkur travel razor and looks very similar. Hey don't forget that Palmolive shave cream next time you're doing the groceries, it's a must. (Unless you already have it) Owen in nz💈

The open comb pearls have the same head as the razorock jaws. Just different handles

Kensurfs That head is ad I would call moderate aggresive. It is not as agressive as the Mulhe R41 or many of the Gem single edge razor But it will bite if your not careful. My RR Jaws has a long large hammer style handle in it which I love. It is also in my opinion blade sensitive. Try using smooth blades rather than super sharp blades. Supermax super platinums work the best for me. when using this razor right, you cant beat the shave

nice thank you! I have one too and I like it, the only bad things that I can say are that the head is not symmetrical and therefore I need to take care of the orientation of the cap in relation to the plate when inserting the blade or the gap would be different on the two sides, this and the fact that the blade wiggles a little so blade alignment has to be taken care of prior to the shave. However I have to say that even mounting the cap the wrong way I can have a good shave if I'm careful enough. What's your experience on these things?

I just bought this razor and I think I got a faulty one. The top plate seems to be asymmetrical, so one side has much more blade exposure. Does yours also look like that?

I just checked mine. When a blade is in it, there is a little bit more blade exposed on one side. There is not the exact same blade exposure on both sides of the head. One side is then a little more aggressive than the other on mine. I hope this helps.

@@kensurfs I had the same issue but I've found out that by rotating the cap 180° I get even exposure and gap on both sides although from the top view of the cap the blade doesn't seem to be exposed equally... once you find the sweet spot you've got to trust the razor and you'll get a good shave!

I don't know about others but Pearl doesn't make Parker. The baseplates, top caps, handles TTO mechanism is totally different. Pearl is based in Gujarat and Parker is based in North India somewhere near Delhi.

Open combs are more aimed to sift through extended growth but i use one as my daily shaver. Personal preference really. id recommend a parker 69cr it comes with both open and closed plates
