Peckforton Light Railway - Houston Gate Loco Works diesel loco RC conversion

After a bargain purchase on eBay, I set about converting a Houston Gate Loco Works (HGLW) kitbuilt loco from manual to radio control using a Deltang Rx65c receiver/controller. A fairly simple conversion. The next stage will be to adapt the bodywork to make it more closely resemble a small centre-cab diesel loco. Peckforton Light Railway is a 45mm garden railway representing a 3-foot narrow gauge railway which might have been constructed to serve the local communities and copper mines along the foot of the Peckforton Hills in Cheshire, UK. Thank you for the informative videos - seeing all the internal components laid out at 0:23 was really useful.

Thanks for sharing Rik, and for giving us a few more ideas of what can be done with some relatively simple mods :)

Thanks Gerald. There's more to come. I'm in the process of converting it from what looks like an electric steeple cab loco into something which looks more diesel-like. Next installment coming soon ..... 😄

Nice looking loco, but I think that it is more reminiscent of some steeple cabbed battery locos rather than diesel. It certainly seems to run nice. I had not heard of HGLW when I had a garden railway.

Hi Mervyn. Yes, my thinking too. I'm in the process of rebuilding it to look a bit more like a diesel loco.

I can see this engine being the station pilot at Beestone Market or Bickerton.

Yes - not sure yet where it will be located. There would be more work for it at Beeston Market - unless it pottered about the sand quarry near Bickerton.... 🤔

There are so many possibilities. Perhaps it's an MOD electric shunter from the great war that's used as the Beestone Market Pilot. Just an idea from other creators that I've seen.

That's a nice little locomotive - I rather like the HGLW range, and really should finish my little diesel from them some day (I built the chassis, then life got in the way and I haven't got back to it). Looking at the circuit diagram you posted, what's the function of the JST plug at the top right, please? Is it just so you can attach an external fast-charger and bypass the BMS?
@rikbennett9

Hi Dan. Thanks for the feedback. The JST plug is so I can balance charge the cells from time to time (i.e. make sure they are holding the same amount of charge). There's more about balance charging on my blog - riksrailway.blogspot.com/2013/10/getting-started-with-battery-power-and.html#balance

Deltang says they are no longer building RX65 anymore. Have you used whatever they're replacing it with?
@rikbennett9
@rikbennett9 4 месяца назад
Hi. Yes, I happened to have a Deltang Rx65c in stock from a batch I bought just before they ceased production. I've now started using Micron MR603 which are compatible with Deltang transmitters. They are equally as good as Deltang and Andy at Micron is starting to develop further products to assure the future of the range - micronradiocontrol.co.uk/land_rc_components.html
