Loved this, I went through elementary school during the 70’s. I recall always being in friendly competition with one of my brothers who was a year younger than me. We did everything together and it was become of him that I learned to ride a bike and to swim in deep water - he was so brave. He passed away last year at only 44yo, God rest his soul, little brother.
I was 9 years old in 1974 and one of the things I remember most was how important a bicycle was to a kid back then. It meant a certain amount of freedom. Loved riding to my friends house, the candy store, the park. My dad would occasionally lead a bunch of us kids from our block on a hike all over town. Lots of fun! Thanks for posting this!
I was 12 years old back in 1974. Had roller skates with the steel wheels that I would clamp onto my Buster Brown shoes. Brings back memories of a simpler time. Heck... we didn't wear safety helmets back then and I had a pair of those crazy plaid jeans back in the day.
It took the whole neighborhood to teach me how to ride a bike. My dad and two other neighborhood dads came out and helped me. The moms and kids all sat on the lawns cheering me on. It was kind of hilarious, I wish there'd been a video. I sucked at it but eventually got the hang of it!
A kid riding a bike these days would be riding towards his own death for sure. It's a shame kids today don't know the simple pleasures in life as we did back then. I was 9 years old when this video was made, and we spent all day on our bikes back in the summer. As long as you were back home by dark it was all good.
OMG, this brings back memories - I was just this age, twelve years old, in 1974. We rode banana seat bicycles with sissy bars and tassels on the handlebars. No helmets, and we rode right in the street - "Look Ma! No hands!" Most of us lived to tell the story...
2000's: concerned residents call police and parents arrested for child endangerment for allowing their children to participate in dangerous "freedom" and "independence."
Some of those kids in the video are in their late 50s. I was 10 years old in 1974 and I’m 57 now. It would be great to go back to that year as a kid again.
