-- Hold on to the reins.
-- AMY: You don't imagine your child who's
perfectly normal is all of a sudden going to,
you know, get really sick.
-- ABIGAIL: I knew I had something wrong,
but I thought, oh maybe I'm just not
exercising enough or something like that.
I couldn't get dressed by myself.
I couldn't get out of bed.
I was kind of wheelchair bound at that point.
-- AMY: It was extremely difficult to watch
your daughter have kind of the life sucked out of her.
I chose Dr. Silco as our pediatrician.
He's our, what do you call it?
our MVP, our most valuable player?
-- DR. SILCO: It took a little bit of time to kind of
get to the bottom of what was going on.
And so it was super important for the family and I
just to keep those open lines of communication.
-- When we're in the room with him,
he always makes us feel like she's his top priority.
-- Look at that!
-- He was of course keeping track of how fast
things were changing and he was corresponding
with all of the other care providers.
-- Whenever there's any kind of specialist,
whether it's just one or 5, 6, or 7 specialists,
you know, I view my role like a leader of the team.
It's my job to make sure that all the pieces are in place
and that all the parts are kind of functioning together
rather than separately.
-- He said "we're going to refer you
to see a neurologist."
And so he confirmed the diagnosis of JDM,
or Juvenile Dermatomyositis.
-- ABIGAIL: I'm feeling better.
I'm getting there, back to normal.
I went rock climbing the other day.
-- It was almost a year ago
that she was diagnosed.
And we're thrilled.
I mean, she's almost back to the Abigail
she was before she got sick.
-- Watch out buddy!
-- She's doing great.
