Peekaboo, Spooky, Dry Fork Narrows Slot Canyons are located in Grand Escalante National Monument in southern Utah. This hike is a great intro to slot canyons and creates an 8ish mile loop. I started on Peekaboo, went over to Spooky and then ended on the Dry Fork Narrows trail. What an insanely fun hike! This hike can get wet (mainly near the river) in spring and summer months.

My husband and I did this hike a few years back. In spooky, the rope did not exist back then. Both of us are short (and older ) so lucky for us a great young man (tall) came along to help us. He jumped down and stood up to let us step on his shoulders and then he bent down to let us off. That hike was the hardest but most exhilarating hike we have done besides the Wave. Thank you for sharing!

Great video! Me and my girlfriend tried doing this hike this summer, but tried doing it the other way (spooky first) because the ledge up into peekaboo was pretty slick and getting up looked difficult. We ended up getting semi-lost though and turned back the way we came. Found out later that we had completely missed the turnoff to spooky and accidentally kept going straight toward another, far less traveled slot canyon called brimstone gulch. You can kind of see where we messed up at about 17:54, we kept going straight toward the left of that frame. Kind of a scary situation as we didn’t know we messed up for another couple miles and we could’ve easily kept going further into brimstone (which eventually pinches closed after a mile or so) thinking it was one of the two normal canyons. The lack of footprints tipped us off, but it ended up adding another couple miles to our day, and we were running low on water there (left early in the morning, but by the time we got back it was close to 100 degrees out). Definitely want to go back and try it again now that we know what we’re doing. Not to be underestimated, especially with just how remote it is out there!

Did this trail 10/18/21 - a quick note about Peek-a-boo after a summer 2021 with a lot of heavy rain. In spots like 6:23 the sandy area that you see was washed out significantly and no longer provides an easy step up that little rock ledge, 1 foot is more like 3-4. When I was there, it was full of a pool of disgusting stagnant water despite no rain for several weeks beforehand. The rock was far too slick and the pool too big for me to work around so I just trudged through the gross pool. It also makes for some tougher moves even without the water - if you can get up into Peek a boo in the first place, you'll be fine, but Peek-a-boo was definitely harder than I remember it being when I first did it in 2020. Just FYI if you're using this video as a guide!

Nice that they've added a rope to that one section since I did it in 2017. I just kinda lowered down as best I could and aimed for the flat rock. Still one of my favorite hiking experiences.

The rope was 100% added by some random, it’s not very safe - probably best to still do it your way TBH. Great hike though, one of my favorites in a long time.

I always wanted to see one of these. I didn't realize how narrow and physically demanding it would be with the climbing up and down. I'm glad you posted it because I will never see one. I thought you just walked in and looked around. I didn't realize all the climbing up and down. I always feared meeting a poisonous snake in one. Thanks for the video.

There are def slot canyons where you just walk in and walk out - the one towards the end of the video is like that. Narrows in Zion is also an example of a walk in / walk out. Glad you enjoyed the vid 👍🏽

Great job with the camera work and the editing. Doing it by yourself you did the trail twice going back and forth to grab the camera, and setting up the next shot and the next and so on. Thanks. Loved the video, the landscape and the slot canyons.

Great video! My wife and I did the first part of Peekaboo last March....At 59 we had to tag-team getting up/down that first move but wow it was well worth it. Now that I know what the rest of PaB is like we will need to go back.....still not sure about Spooky...may have to actually put those new years resolutions in motion as it looked tighter than what I remember of PaB. Thanks for a great trip review (and at least for me....a great recent memory)

Great video. Awesome (in the true sense of the word) landscape. I would not have the courage to do this one myself. I know if you carefully plan the hike in the right season there is no flash flood danger, but still I kept imagining that situation and stressing 🙂 Another thing I soooo enjoyed was the natural sounds of the hike and no soundtrack. IMHO sound tracks often spoil an otherwise good video.

Very informative video with plenty of details and great recommendations. May i ask if you think Mid June is a “risky” time due to flash flood in the area?
@TheVirtualSherpa
@TheVirtualSherpa 4 месяца назад
Yes, I would say that is probably one of the most risky times. Anytime rapid snow melt or a rain storm is possible, a flash food is also likely. This website is a great resource to check the forecast before you hike www.weather.gov/slc/flashflood
@c55427

We think that rock was coral? Not sure. We went a few days ago, the foot holds are already wore out entering peekaboo imho. We didn’t do Spooky because of it being too narrow and I’m glad I watched this video since it confirms what we were told. The bypass trail of Spooky is not marked and is only visible on some GPS app (luckily helpful strangers had such an app). BLM really needs a marked bypass trail so each section can be more easily traversed separately.

Thanks so much for your detailed videos! They must be a lot of work! They're wonderful though! They've been a great help to me while researching possible hikes for when I take a trip out west. I think the rope climb down in Spooky might be a bit much for me. But I'd like to try the Peek-A-Boo hike. Is there way to hike just Peek-A-Boo...but without doing it as an out-and-back? I'm concerned about having to do that very first climb in reverse and having to descend those carved-in "steps". So, I guess what I'm asking is: is there a way to go through Peek-A-Boo and then just loop around back to the beginning somehow?
@TheVirtualSherpa
@TheVirtualSherpa Год назад
There are not any trails to avoid either canyon but if you had to go back through Peek-A-Boo that entry climb should be easy enough to "slide" down if you are not able to downclimb it. Might end up with some holes in your clothing but should be relatively safe.

Hey Shane - I think you should be okay. A few spots might be tight (pretty obvious which ones towards the end of the video) but you can always go up higher/lower if needed to get through.
