UPDATE: October 17, 2018. This video features Mississauga Councillor Katie Mahoney, Co-Chair of the Peel Youth Violence Prevention Network. This individual, along with Co-Chair Brampton Councillor Gael Miles addressed" the Roots of Youth Violence" with TalkTalkTalk among "community partners" who also TalkTalkTalk on panels, steering committees and PHOTO-OPS.
Not ONCE did these individuals braying about the need for data and statistics ever insist that Peel Police produce the necessary data/stats (ie: especially in relation to race) to inform the public and reveal what was really going on, let alone address the issues.
Then there's Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell --and a Peel Police Services Board and their fakery of oversight and appalling hypocrisy that continue to this day (October 17, 2018) under Brampton Mayor Linda Jeffrey. (No politician has the conviction to acknowledge, let alone address the true "roots" of violence.
You can lay the blame for a decade of Region of Peel Pretend at Mahoney, Miles (and Saito's) feet. (Although they'd firmly deny, deny, deny)
Peel Councillors Grill Police Chief Over Stunning Rise In Murder Rate
CITYNEWS Posted Oct 16, 2008
The normally quiet area of the GTA has suddenly turned into a hotbed of violence with a record 24 killings so far this year. The latest - 14-year-old Rajiv Dharamdial - is being described as a good kid who wasn’t involved with the wrong crowd.
All the violence has prompted residents in the Region to ask one question: what in the world is going on? That’s also what local councillors want to know and they’re going to the top for answers, calling in Peel Police Mike Metcalf for an intense Q&A on the reasons behind the rise - and how to stop it.
“I mean, you’ve had such a dramatic increase,” Metcalf admitted Thursday. “You do the analysis and there isn’t one single reason or one single group, one single age group that’s doing it. It’s sporadic.
Those who live in the affected cities - mostly Mississauga and Brampton - are becoming increasingly alarmed at the violence, and many who moved out of Toronto to escape these kinds of incidents are now pondering another escape for a new save haven.
Chief Metcalf says none of the recent murders are related, but some city officials say in order to understand the spike, you have to first understand Peel’s growing population.
“We’ve taken in probably an average of 27,000 people each year. When you add that kind of growth, you’re going to certainly get issues that come with growth,” said Emil Kolb, Regional Chair, Peel Region.
Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell say the violence will only increase if all levels of government don’t step up, and they say the justice system has to change.
“There needs to be tougher consequences that people need to be thinking about. You know, you will get caught in Peel, and the consequence will be unpleasant,” said Fennell.
