Yeah that's how the MLM and pyramid schemes actually make money, not from the members selling products, but from the members recruiting new members to climb the pyramid.
@@YggdrasilAudio I was nearly embroiled in an MLM, but managed to get out before getting sucked in too deep. once i got out, i forgot about them until i came across internet videos exposing the inner workings of MLMS and I was 'holy fuck' that's what almost happened to me and I almost became a victim like these poor bastards.

Anyone remember those old thin pads Steve was writing on? The realtors used to leave those on your doorstep. Those were money for writing notes and stuff. Especially when people would call and you had to leave a message for your parents or something.
Aaahh...MLM business!! Some of my friends were getting rich on those ponzi schemes in the 80s and 90s...i came too late so got burned by it...a tragic ending!!
I almost got suckered into a ponzi scheme selling insurance. Once it was explained to me how it worked and that in order to be a team player I would have to pay $5.00 every month to access the network and give money to the guys above me. I walked away real quick once I figured it was a sham scam.
Don't believe them; they were probably spending more than they were making. And it's been show most of these MLM people lie about how much they make anyway.
don't know if the uploader edited it or it was edited for rerun, but there's dialogue missing at 1:16. when Al asks "how much do we owe"? Peg responds with something like "you mean after my commission"? to which Al sighs an exasperated "yes."
How do these pyramid schemes stay in business? I've had family sell Mary Kay and Avon. They don't pay the salespeople, I think they give em prizes. Also in this episode Peggy was buying all sorts of crap, so she must have had money left over.
Kelly's financial ventures usually worked, though, at least in the first half of the episode. Very common episode formula to have Kelly scratch the surface of stardom/becoming the family cash cow only for Al to somehow do something to cause it all to slip through his fingers.

In all the years this was on the air I probably never watched ten episodes from beginning to end. The show was so bitterly cynical. A slap in the face to the American Dream.
