My brain exploded when he suggested saving your scraps so you could use them as a base for another gun setup. Seriously, I'm now sitting here drooling on myself. This will work very well for my Rifle Dynamics AKM and my future GA precision build. BRAVO!

Try using chalk instead of a marker to avoid leaving permanent marks on your foam.

f you have a Pelican case, just replace the last digit of the model with a “1”. For example, the 1750 Case uses 1751 Foam: Pelican 1751 Original 3 PC Replacement Foam Set for Pelican Case 1750 (use our web-site search)

You should glue the top foam to the bottom with spray mount. This will prevent the foam from shifting and adds additional stability.

What a fantastic tutorial. It was exactly what I was looking for. I would have NEVER thought about using an electric carving knife, but it makes perfect sense. So does the serial number up. Why not cut down on the time spent with TSA. Steve is a fantastic Instructor. Slow and concise. Keep him teaching on RU-vid Optics Planet. Thanks for all the great information Steve.

Informative video. I had a choice of either a Pelican or SKB case. I chose SKB bc it's stronger, lighter, better wheels, rubber handles, better latches and has a $1500 coverage warranty if an airline damages your equipment. Still made in the USA!

Great question, and the answer is YES, but not in a case with such firm cut out structure like in the Storm or Pelican cases. In other cases, or in the case of using a soft case for your gun like the OPMOD double gun case, or the new OPMOD Waterproof MRS (Modular Sporting Rifle) case that I'll be using in Alaska next week instead of the middle piece of foam, yes. The foam cut out for a gun is so secure, that it really does not matter how the gun is positioned. Thanks for watching & the question!

@APhelps91 Hi there! We linked to the Pelican Storm 3300 (the one Steve uses in the video) and more storm cases in different sizes and colors in the description box. We tried to post it here for your convenience, but sadly RU-vid wouldn't allow it. Hope this helps!

OK, Good video, if you can always guarantee that every baggage handler is going to roll that thing on it's wheels. Not going to happen. Every one of them is going to pick it up by the hand grip, and toss it to the next spot: the cart, the conveyor, and the guy in the cargo hold stowing stuff is going to do the same. I NEVER put a scoped gun inside with the scope to the hinges The wight of the rifle hammering the scope, every time it is dropped. Even when first picked up by the grip, by the owner to place it on the exam place, the weight of the rifle comes down on that expensive scope (remember the advice to pay more for your scope than your rifle?) That weight on the bell end (Objective end) will torque it at the narrow part. Great. No wonder the Professional Hunter insists on sighing shots on arrival. I put the scope toward the hand grip of the case. and I wedge some of the material I took out, into hard points to keep the scope from banging on the foam above it, no matter how hard the case is thrown. Never had a scope come out of zero, when we do sighting shots at the hunt.

My case lid closes without having to put a hand on it to latch it closed. But my scope turret does leave a little imprint on the top foam is that okay? As long as there is no serious pressure on it?

Well, I don't have an electric carving knife. But I do have a jigsaw. Do you think that would work in a pinch?
@OpticsPlanet
@OpticsPlanet 12 лет назад
If you turn the two rifles so that the grips are facing each other, with the barrels pointing in opposite directions, you should be able to accomplish that - I hope that makes sense.

A jigsaw blade is meant to be used with a hard surface, I think a jigsaw would mangle the foam. Have you seen the type of craft knife that you can extend the blade slightly and snap off pre-scored sections as it wears? Take a new one, and extend the blade to full length. If you’re feeling up for a project, ar15.com has instructions for building your own hot wire cutter:

Question...Why did you remove the bolt and carve out a separate opening for it? Wouldn't it be easier to leave it in the rifle?
@OpticsPlanet
@OpticsPlanet 7 лет назад
Hi 62T, If you travel, and especially if you fly, you need to have your firearms in a non-active state (for a lack of a better term, sorry, it's Monday morning haha). For boltguns, this is done by keeping the bolt separate. Overall it is just a safety precaution. Thanks for the comment!
