Love the symbolism of both the jackal and falcon statues in this arc breaking when chaka and Pell fell. And the Pell vivi backstory was so sweet. Pell was a great character in this arc.
The statues were just simply visual symbolism. There wasnt any tangible relation or power. Oda is very big on symbolism and different ongoing themes. Its understandable to look further into meanings of things where there might not be anything :P
This was such an intense moment the first time I read it. If you’re able the final few episodes of this arc are best watched in a block since there’s a number of iconic moments. This arc also winds up having huge consequences for the rest of the story.
As far as I know, anime has this trend (not sure if its a Japanese folk tale or something) where if something of the character cracks or breaks out of the blue (usually like a favorite cup or a picture or something that represents the character in general... In this case the bird statue that represents Pell), then that character's life is either endanger or is going to end.
Spoiler warning !!!!! The thing that really irritates me about this moment is that it becomes worthless when we find out that Pell survives. What was the point of he could survive with minimal injuries.
@@Nick-uf3he chapter 208, pell's sacrifice -> Release date : November 19, 2001. This is actually the case for this chapter, literally one month after the attacks. Oda prefers to kill characters when it's meaningful. Death is such a powerful story telling tool in One Piece (look at all of the Strawhats' flashbacks) that it seems wasted on such a minor character like Spandam. And ennemies characters often become allies, Oda keeps them for a later use in the plot. And besides Zoro (and prime Robin), Straw hats are not the kind of people to kill their ennemies.
@@MrElekk yeah I get what your saying but I think spandam should have died, he played such a significant role in Frankys life and his father played an integral role in robins. Him dying symbolized the end of their pasts and the end of them running away from their pasts. He doesn’t really bring much except for being the cause of their tragic backstories so to bring him back was pointless he’s not funny, interesting, or scary. Other than that I’d say I’m fine with oda not killing off characters however it would make it a lot more realistic if he did.
