Penelope Featherington Missed out on Romance for Love [CC] 

My problem with Colin is that I get the impression that he loves the validation he gets from Penelope more than he loves her.

Lord Debling looked at Penelope with light in his eyes. The man literally lit up any time he was around her. Colin has never looked at her that way.

It was such a missed opportunity to make a great story where pen grows into a magnificent, confident lady, to make Colin work for her because she's amazing.

Books be damned! She should have ended up with Lord Debling! I truly felt love would've eventually grown between the two of them since at least they were honest about who they were from the very beginning. If anything I loved Francesca this season. Her story really captured what it's like to be an introvert and how one goes about falling in love.

I like how Lord Debling actually challenged Pen to be a better person and take accountability - the character growth through their relationship would have been interesting to watch

Colin kept his word he never court Penelope, he just went hot and heavy with a risk of dropping her 🤷🏽‍♀️

The lord lowkey was such a feminist too!! He wanted Penelope to live her life as she pleases with no judgement on his end like girl ?!? I was so pissed he didn’t even bother fighting for her love a bit. Even Penelope’s mom advised her to stop leading with her emotions and heart!! I'm not even convinced Colin has love for Pen like that, so it feels like Pen lost a good match for love but for a mere clueless but convenient boy Colin Bridgerton. So much pain, indeed.

Colin was being such a greaseball. I know why they did it but it was so hard for me to watch. I need that man to suffer longer. It's nearly not long enough. He needed to see more of Penelope slipping away from him fr. Penelope should've rejected him so hard until he had to get on his knees and everything. Crying screaming throwing up kinda suffering. Friends to lovers stories like this only work when the person who hasn't shown any interests suffers a lot. I will be dying on that enemies to lovers hill with you though. I really liked Lord Debling too. His vegetarian ways and naturalist rizz was working on me. Penelope stronger than most of the ton (me specifically). Giving up security AND naturalist husband is not for me.

I'm not a book reader, so I don't know how Colin is portrayed there, but I honestly wished that Penelope listened to her mother and got together with Lord Debling. Prior to the season, I rewatched the other seasons, and he was truly the only one who not only made an effort in getting to know Penelope and her interests, but who saw her for who she truly is (someone who loves gossip and drama, romance is well-read and can be funny) Eloise only truly saw Pen for who she was on her quest on finding out who Lady Whistledown is ( prior to that she never saw the true Pen. The fact she is shocked that Pen is looking for a husband this season, truly shows that Eloise never really knew her.) Colin is the same as Eloise, but worse. Just like Colin (and Eloise) loves Penelope to be his personal hype woman. He only grew interested in Penelope because he didn't have there full attention. He only wants her because another man wants her. We should have seen how Colin fights for Penelope. We should have seen how he sticks up to the ton when they belittle her. We (as well as the entire ton) should have seen how he truly treasure her. What we truly got instead was no build up, him running her proposal, him fingering her in carriage and then proposing to her... Portia Featherington doesn't' have it easy.. that poor woman

Pen and Collin could’ve been used as a way to show unrequited first love(Penelope) and not realizing what you have until it’s gone(Colin). The writers already differed from the books by switching up the timeline from the books so It Penelope should’ve married Lord Deblin. Penelope could’ve told Colin that he publicly humiliated her, has threatened her reputation, and has never once considered her a Romani prospect until someone else wanted her. Call him out for acting like a toddler, not wanting a toy until someone else likes it. I hate this trope, it makes no sense. Penelope left security and a man who genuinely had interest in her from the get go for a man who waited till the last minute to ask for her. And he only asked when he knew she would no longer be available to him at his convenience. This season made me so angry, Penelope deserves so much more.

Omg I’m so glad I found this video lol I was beginning to think I was bitter 🤣😂 I hate that the ONLY plus sized woman had to ASK for a kiss, practically beg for affection and only once she’s reduced herself to begging did Collin see her as a possible match for himself! Totally agreed. I just don’t trust Colin’s “love.” He seems more intrigued by her right now than in love. Also, because of the very sexy carriage ride, he’s ruined her if anyone finds out, which they probably will. And the fact that he acted like that without making his intentions clear is totally disrespectful even though she enjoyed it. She was probably thinking a little bit that well her life is over might as well enjoy it. And the trailers for the next half totally look like she’s going to have to be begging him for forgiveness when he should be begging for her forgiveness. Colin is bad news, Lord Debling would have given her security, comfort, respect, and freedom.

You are so right though, that's precisely what annoys me about (some) friends to lovers. I am always a glutton for mutual pining, but when it's like it is here and one side spent years taking the attention of the other for granted, it's much more difficult to see how they are worth that much energy. It could absolutely change once we have the rest of the season, but so far Colin just hasn't put in enough work to get me completely on-side.

The only thing the show did better than the book for this season is that Penelope didn’t lose weight. She got to remain the same and get her “love” in the show. And I totally agree with everything said. Penelope is my favorite and she deserves the world. I wish there had been a better love rival for her. Someone who actually found her charming and beautiful from the moment he first laid eyes on her… but then if that happened, no one would root for Colin 😭

I think if the writers wrote in season 2 that Colin loved Penelope but was to chicken to admit it-then we would have loved his confession even more at the end of part 1. He would have been wanting Penelope for like 7 episodes instead of 3 and that speech his mother gives about armor would have been deeply impacting.

I was really hoping for this to be well developed, I quite like the friendship to lover trope so I was hoping this would be great. I still enjoyed it, but I really didn’t like that it felt unearned. I kept thinking about how Penelope was giving up stability, title and wealth for a man like the Colin that we got. We didn’t even get enough scenes with them together for me to believe in the love they have for each other. Instead, we got unnecessary side plots, fuckboy Colin, like I really didn’t care for it especially since after they kissed, it was supposed to be the moment he realised and started to actually work towards earning her. But no, he’s still with those two girls whilst he’s supposedly in love already, bro I wanted him to be miserable, angsty trying to get her love. That really annoyed me.

So... I know no one wants to hear it but I think the show is setting up Lord Debling to marry Cressida. Once she puts down the mean girl persona they can bond over the disdain of their families. One thing that did about me about Lord Debling is stating that he needs someone to run his estate while he travels. Why can't his bride come with him on his travels? He just got back and town, so who was managing it before that ? Why does your bride had to be alone for the duration of your trips?

I would have loved it if we had a friends-to-lovers more in the style of Flipped (which I know isn't friends-to-lovers but stay with me). It would have been nice to see Pen completely lose interest after the end of season 2, but Colin realize his feelings and have to earn her back. THAT would have been wonderful, and I think the writers were trying to go for that... kind of? Whatever they were going for, it fell flat, between too much time devoted to side plots, the lessons that lasted all of two minutes and made no lasting impact, and the lack of a concerted effort to give us a crumb of chemistry... I hate this season more than season 1, and I hated season 1.

I see that many (myself included) has falled in love with Lord Debling. But what's right for us is not always good for Penelope. She was so heartbroken in the episode 4, my heart goes to her 💔 Pen's mum shaming her for wanting a love match, her watching the Eros and Psyche dance and realising she will never get it, Lord Debs saying he only loves nature... It's just too much. And after all that her dreams came true? I can only be happy for our girl 🎉

I think the thing about "Colin needing to suffer" doesn't work as much for me because it's not as if Colin was willfully/knowingly stringing Pen along. Pen never confessed to him, so she essentially put herself in that position. You can call Colin clueless, but he's not cruel. Sure, he made a douchy comment towards some other bro dudes - but this fits in with his character arc wherein he gradually moves away from the external pressure of the ton to find himself and find the self-assurance to throw those expectations to the wind. I feel like this is a very realistic journey basically everybody goes through - finding where you want to fit in society. Also, he does have a grovely apology towards Pen later plainly admitting his fault and not making excuses for it. Given Colin's lack of bad intentions, I see no reason for Pen to get enjoyment out of his suffering (or hers, since she's still in love with him - so denying him is denying herself as well). It's just not really part of her character. Personally, I also find a lot of romance in the ideas of kindness and vulnerability in love. Giving someone the benefit of the doubt in a situation where your feelings have been unintentionally hurt because of them (note: I want to make clear I am NOT including abusive behavior here) and choosing to forgive and love them without engaging in schadenfreude, to me, is a sign of trust and acceptance towards that other person. Because we all have our unsavory and misunderstood moments; someone taking the time to talk with you, clarify feelings on both sides, and move forward together, constructively, without assumptions or guilt-tripping, is an essential part of loving someone wholly and for who they truly are. You know the saying: "we love people in light of their faults, not because they are faultless." Of course things change when the offending party won't be receptive to the offended party's feelings - but that's another discussion, and not the case in Polin's relationship. There is a sweetness, gentleness and earnestness within their dynamic that I really adore. But of course what one likes in a romance is down to personal preference.

ARE WE FORGETTING THE SHOW IS LITERALLY ABOUT THE BRIGERTONS....IM NOT MUCH OF A COLIN FAN EITHER BUT ENDING UP WITH DEBLING MAKES NO SENSE FOR WHO PENELOPE IS WHICH IS A HOPELESS ROMANTIC AND HE'S MADE IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT THERE'S NO ROOM FOR LOVE IN HIS HEART. I think i would've prefered if colin was always in love with penelope but didnt wanna break their friendship and lose her (even though regency era so they'd get married but he wanted Penelope to find a love match and was selfless about his own love for her so he never confessed ya know?) and was sad when marina got exposed but also relieved that he wouldnt have to go through with the marriage after having major second thoughts after promising to marry her. And then when Penelope is 🤏🏻 close to marrying lord debling, he decides to tell her so that he doesnt regret anything (and cause he's jealous)

In the books their relationship is more redeemable... You see Colin come back after years and start to notice Penn little by little, you se her grow into herself little by little as well... It starts for him with curiosity and desire, they get engaged because oh well carriage endeavors lol... But even in the book when they go to announce it, originally at the Featherington's and not Bridgerton house, he likes to tease her, to get to know her emotions bit by bit. There is also the very important conversation between him and Daphne about how you know it's love... And we get to see his admiration for Penn's writing, his realization of how much he loved her and the sudden fear of realizing she could've married someone else... He was also not such a man whore in the books, it's like they wanted the character in the show to outdo Benedict's shenanigans 🤣 In here, it was SOOOO rushed, there were more developments in side stories instead of them together, they needed to have this season be 10 eps, and they could've fleshed this out so much better than they did... I really doubt a mere 4 eps will redeem it completely, but waiting to see this for so long to get such a disappointing story line and butchering of two important characters and the DISRESPECT to our Penn, nah, this was such a let down... Kanthony still reigns supreme as far as Bridgerton love matches, and the side story of Queen Charlotte still has my no.1 spot. I totally agree with all you said. Gimme a Lord Debling any day!

I would put a lot more blame on the show writers than anything else. They had a mostly "blank" base of a book to put a great story. There was a lot more room for pinning and *deep* conversations. Like S2 had deeper conversations than anything I've seen in season 3A. If you're gonna build a love triangle SHOW us why even then she couldn't let Colin go. Give us the pinning, the sexual tension, the deep conversations, the goofiness, the gifts 👀. Maybe if the Whistledown discovery had been earlier they could've contrasted both suitors reactions to it or even paralleled it, so that in one aspect they're in equal ground. So many great things could've been done...

I don't know if I'm being too much of an innocent person, but have anyone here caught the feeling that maybe the hole point of the part.1 of season 3 were supposed to be rushed BECAUSE in part 2 there's going to be an explanation for all of this concerning parts from part 1? My thoughts below: - 1º big mistake: Colin's forced personality -> maybe there could be a moment in part 2 where Pen sees he in the worst/not Colin-like actions ever to the point where she points out how OUT OF PLACE he is in society as much as Pen when hiding behing LW... Like both of them throwing to each other their mistakes and finally growing out of them? - 2º big mistake: Rushed plot for the romance of Polin -> they could be rushing because it's just the "start" of the hole tea, because if Pen confesses that she is LW, then it will be so explosive and maybe can lead to a bigger chemistry, a big spite from Colin, Pen completely throwing everything up in the air and finally having her biggest grow as a character... That's just my thoughts, I've seen that the internet is giving a lot of mixed opinions and bets of what's going to happen, while I'm thinking (with hope) that next season will also be Polin in the center of the narrative BECAUSE IF NOT S3 PT.2 WAS A MISTAKE.

Then he notices all the attention he’s getting because there’s one person who he’s not getting attention from anymore because the lessons work. Because if he had feelings all along (I think he did and S2 had us believing he did) then he should have been increasingly unhinged by not hearing back from her. And worried about her. 2. This is a man who pledged to take care of her in season 2. Where is he? Instead he just goes off to be a slut in 17 cities? And doesn’t give two shits about a friend not writing him back? Just goes and fucks some more sex workers and Countesses? Let me write about it in my journals too! 3. His apology was glib and unworthy of Penelope and their friendship. They made it about Penelope thinking she is unworthy not Colin being a drunk ass and insulting her to eligible bachelors/her chances on the marriage mart. 4.Colin comes back does the same whoring about the entire time he is teaching Penelope lessons (for weeks apparently) and then kisses her because he feels sorry for her. Ugh that is so gross to me. 5.Then because he is supposedly so despondent over Pen having a suitor, he goes back to fuck some sex workers again. 6.He only gets up enough courage to tell Penelope how he feels once he knows she is getting proposed to. Like he couldn’t call on her, not even once, or bribe her maid again, to see her and explain how he feels. Instead it’s poor me me me me…. I keep asking myself why I should want ShondaColin with Penelope. She deserves sooo much better than him. They could easily made him a fake Casanova who’s just lying 🤥 to fit in. That would’ve been something different. It would’ve made him more endearing and intriguing instead of another. Man Whore

I WILL NOT hear your aspersions on the friends-to-lovers trope, which is the superior trope. I will, however, agree with you on the fact that Polin is not a good pairing so far. However, my problem is that Colin is just not a good friend. Colin's relationship with Pen depends on HER goodness, she's just kind of been people-pleasing this man who doesn't deserve her this entire time. You're right, she should have rejected him, at least intially

While I do disagree on some of your opinions (I do like friends to lovers for example) I agree that love does make one settle. In some instances settling is perfectly fine, like when you have a strong base of friendship. But if a relationship is based on lust then settling is a bit problematic for me. Also Pen would be unhappy eventually if she had a loveless marriage as she does long for it. I just hope the show can make Colin almost deserving of her love - cos he was an ass in the book.

This is the only video that gets why this story feels so unsatisfying! Pen deserves more. Colin needed more development for him to deserve Pen and become a romantic lead we can root for. Colin sabotaging Pen’s prospects reminds me of how the Duke sabotaged Daphne’s prospects in S1. I’m concerned that Pen is going to have to “earn” Colin more in P2 when her secret comes out. Tbh, I’m not sure what “love” means in S1 and S3. The Duke was a downgrade and so is Colin as he is currently written in the show (haven’t read the books). Sorry not sorry.

Never liked Anthony. This is the most enjoyable season for me so far.
