The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel ru-vid.comUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

I have all three of these reels, in fact I have had 3 Daiwa Saltist in the last few years. I loved Saltist reels until they gave me problems and were hard to crank. I sent one back to Daiwa service for a maintenance for around 100 dollars and it came back like new. In fact, it may have been a new reel. I have another Saltist that is now inoperable and I refused to spend another 100plus to get the maintenance. The third still works ok but is slowing down, The Penn Slammer is kind of bulletproof and for surf fishing it is a tank. My favorite is the Shimano Saragossa 6000 which I use for surf fishing. It cast well and the return is silky smooth in fact so smooth that sometimes I reel in a fish not knowing he is still on the hook. My vote is the Saragossa and I plan to buy another one for my wife because her Saltist is going down hill.

Yep I have only Shimanos for surf fishing. An ultegra 5500 on a Ninja 11’ dagger and a Serphos 14000 on a Star Stellar 12’. When reeling in fish, sometimes I literally won’t feel them until they hit the shore.

New subscriber from South Africa. Thanks for the comparison Ryan, some really pragmatic considerations given in your comparison. Some interesting insights for someone who's been out of it for a couple years. Typically for surf fishing, if you're running a big grinder (here in S.A) filled with Suffix 832/J-Braid or equivalent in the 65lb range (with several hundred meters of Berkley Whiplash Pro backing) targeting big flat fish and sharks. And... they're usually Shimano Saragosa's and up. Shimano always had a great reputation for grinders, more so than Daiwa with Penn in 3rd place. For multipliers, it was always Daiwa (Saltist/Saltiga) with Penn in second place and Shimano in 3rd (especially the newer Trinidad's). The Shimano multipliers were always notoriously hard to cast well, so we magged the spools; which works really well. But we tend to cast multipliers differently to you guys, because we typically are targeting distance when casting in the surf or off rocks into the surf. So some really interesting insights into the newer models and interesting to see the newer innovations from all 3 manufacturers. You just made me realise I need a new grinder... :)

The Saragosa drag clicker is amazing. The Slammer’s is “ok”. The problem I have with my Slammer 5500 is the drag seems inconsistent; e.g. If I loosen half a turn, then turn it back up, the drag might not be anywhere near where it originally was. There are also times where I loosen the drag by like a quarter turn, but the drag got tighter. Weird.

Can't stand with Shimano reels here. Own 3 Stradics FJ/FK and 1 Saragosa, all 3 stradics are death to me. Took out FJ for surf fishing, can't crank the reel next day. Bought FK for 2 weeks, can't reel because line roller bearing issue. Try Saragosa, they keep having endless problem with line roller bearing to the point the guy fish next to me, walk F-out because he can't stand with noise lol. Try Saltist 2016 once and I never look back at Shimano again. Drop this damn thing into ocean and never wash it. It is running smooth. Now, I push all the way to Saltiga/Certe. Truly, love Daiwa reel. They are fun to fish with.

Zinc main in a 200$ reel is pushing it. Zinc main in a 300$+ very hard to justify. The Magseal is nice too but if you use the same reel and fish a lot it doesnt last more then a couple years. If that reel takes some spray when your jetty or surf fishing after the Magseal has emulsified, you can feel the difference right away. You can tear down the BG/Saltist and LTs to clean the sand and debris out, but unles you have that MQ wrench your beat. If you dont want to risk damage or wear you have to stop fishing that MQ and get it serviced. If Daiwa was better with getting reels back and didn't charge so much to reapply the ferrofluid it wouldn't be as big of a deal.

For me it's been and I think will remain shimano, I do all the maintenance myself and find it easy, as well parts are easy to find on web even for older models, I find the wording "smooth" subjective because by smooth you mean light to crank, Daiwa's have always been lighter on the start- and use les power to rotate than Shimano's (true for all ranges, ex: stradic vs caldia same results, but I actually enjoy the feeling of Shimano's more. I replace all my reels handle knobs with aluminum balls on bearings and I find the Shimano's egg knob don't age very well in the eat (South Florida) and become really annoyingly sticky. The opposite of smooth would be rough (like metal grind or high frequency vibrations, noise) which non of the 3 are. Penn makes the best cleaning product in spray bottle on the market, that thing is insane, I go through a lot, I use it for everything including washing my hands after working on the car, I believe it even helps keeping mosquitos away, it's my tee tree oil for engineers and anglers haha. And to finish with another subjective view I would like to say I catch more on shimano's which is the most important to me so they are more of my lucky brand haha, you know need to have that feeling of having an edge or an advantage on the fish or on your mates to keep you concentrate on your fishing action and to believe it's going to happen now from the first to the last cast... @@cayreimer1486 kind of like comparing a Ferrari to a Toyota. Yeah the Ferrari is gonna be nicer to drive and looks prettier but when your spending thousands of dollars repairing or replacing your Ferrari im dragging my Toyota through the mud with 400,000 miles on the clock and never had to repair anything lol

For price, and usability, the shimano is unbeatable. Id like a penn or diawa but all my other reels are shimano so all my parts and accessories are interchangeable. I’m not one to buy a top of the line stella etc when the gosa does the same thing.

Hi Guy's help req'd... one of those req'd features google won't find.... I am fishing for Sea Bass from a high cliff 100 meters (110 yards) with no access down... I gotta reel them all the way up, dead weight n all. I know most reels will reel up the fish but here's the deal... when reeling in water and reeling a dead weight (2- 2.5kg - 4lb)... that's a whole different league of power, smoothness and build quality. Kinda the ultimate test of a reel quality you could say. I am hoping some of you Guy's know which reels stand out for this? An open faced reel weighing around 485-500grams (1pound or just over) to match my rod and allow other uses. Thank You Guy's in advance.

Correct me if I am wrong but the bail on The slammer 4 is titanium, as well as the spool shaft. Not hollow either it's just the size they decided to make it.

Gosa! I got 8k and love how tanky it feels a quick spray and wipe is all I do after a day of fishing. With my stradic reels I would feel all sick when they would get splashed by waves, with the gosa I still get the same anxiety but I reassure myself with the knowledge in knowing that others before me have submerged it without issue which is a huge reason I switched from stradics. Love the Saragosa, loved Shimano all my life, as growing up all of our fishing gear was Shimano. Great video mahalo for sharing.

You can definitely go wrong with Penn. Heavy, bulky, and for people who are ok with not catching those trophy fish. And that's totally fine for some anglers.

I’m retiring to the Panama City FL. area and looking to get into Surf Fishing. Looking for advice on rod and reel, combos for species, such as red drum, black, drum wing, Pompano, etc. looking to get started with equipment that I won’t outgrow in a few years and anyone any experienced angler be happy to have.

100% Daiwa BUT.... don't waste your money on this saltist MQ I've bent three of their handles already in 4 months the 4k , 8k ,20k don't buy this real.. water got into my 4K and noise coming from the gears on my 8k and 20k buy a Caldia Sw 2022 model .. same ballpark price and a better reel.. and don't forget the new Saltiga Flagship model will be dropping anytime between here and January

The slammer 3s had the same type of plastic bushing like the saltist does in the line roller. The 4 added the feature

I don't understand why daiwa rescaled the mq.. i have a saltist 5000 (not mq) and to get the same adistance of line with the mq i have to get the saltist 10000 mq.. which cost around $400 where the old saltist 5000 non-mq. Is about $260.. i don't know if i want to spend $400-500 on a reel…. Also to me what i fear the most is not salt water but sand.. i fish most of the time on the beach and on the beach sand is a nightmare.l. Even if you don't put the reel directly on the sand… you get sand everywhere.. could be the sinker , the fish it self no kidding, or even your hand.. sometime you need to grab something that came in contact with the sand and then you touch the reel without realizing it.. then your reel ends up with sand . Sometime things happen so fast, that you can ruine your $300 reel in just a split of a second because of the sand.. so to me, a reel that has the best sand proofing is the beat best reel.. i lost few shimano due to sand.. and i was unable to save them because they were just too difficult to service., shimano have too many springs and tiny screws .. need to be careful how you dismantle the parts.. anyway, im happy with my saltist 5000 non mq , that im thinking about upgrading to a mq version but because i want to get. 12 -13 feet rod , im thinking about getting a saltist 14000 mq..

Absolutely nothing wrong with a Zinc main gear. Especially when it is a large gear with tons of torgue. Will outlast the smaller brass and aluminum gear

I have a Slammer IV 5500 and with how much of a beating it’s been put through over the last 6 months it hasn’t given me a single issue also with some of the larger fish I have fought it man handles them when I see other anglers on the pier struggling with smaller fish with more expensive or even larger reels sometimes I will say it is fairly heavy so I wouldn’t want to throw it 100 times in a day the drag sound is also amazing if it’s setup right
