Dennis,I’ve been waiting for this Squall 30 LW video. Bravo! Now I can disassemble and tune up mine with confidence, with the master at my side ! All kidding aside ,Thank You for what you do . I used to just squirt oil into my reels , and after watching your videos and securing a schematic , I can take apart and reassemble any reel with ease! I’ve become very popular with my fishing buddies,too .I’ve even fixed some of my old reels that I never thought would fish again . Thanks again ,Rocky.

Nicely done Dennis! I’ll be doing a very nice Roddy Roddymatic 904 tomorrow. It is one I’ve never worked on before so I’m sure it will be interesting. It is a saltwater spinning reel.

The free spool lever has some play on one of my Squall level wind reels. The spring does not appear to be under tension until I pull it back about 1/8” from its locked position. On my other Squall the spring tension is immediate. Could the spring on the free spool lever have worked its way out of the slot on the Jack plate?

Yes - it is possible that the spring may be worn, broken or loose. That free spool release can work without the spring, so it is worth looking at to make sure the spring is properly set or replaced - Dennis

Turns out it was the rectangular cutout in the eccentric lever itself that was slightly worn out which is why there is some play in the mechanism. The spring and the rest of the internals were fine. Ordered a replacement lever.

I have a pen squall non level wind. When I go to cast it starts out smooth then it’s like the breaks get put on and stops the cast. I’ve just put the real aside cause I’m at a lose to what’s going on. Any information would be appreciated

Have you checked the line? If you have not replaced it in a while, my first thought is that the older line and been compressed and is binding after a bit of the top layer is released. I would change it out before anything else if it has been on the reel for a while. If it is new line, it may be something trapped inside the spool and gears that is causing the issue - Dennis

Great video, thanks. I have a concern on my squall 30 lw, I have 4 of them and they are all a bit loose where the body is riveted to the rod clamp, wondering if this is normal or can be fixed. Thanks

It's not normal and I don't have an easy fix. You can replace the frame for around $50 or you can drill out the loose rivets and replace with screws. Sounds like a design issue - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Thanks for the reply, I managed to get a person on the line at Penn and they said this must be a manufacturing fault and I should send the reels in for repair or replacement, customer service at Penn seems alive and well

What’s the reason for using plastic on the idler gear? Same as on the old GTI reels. Once the teeth wear away the level wind stops working and you’re left with an unusable reel until you can get home and replace the idler.

The plastic idler gear is a failsafe. It is the weakest link in the chain. If the reel gets hung up, that gear will break rather than ripping up all of the pieces in the line guide, worm gear, pawl, assembly. Plastic also has flex and is naturally lubricated, so it make the transition from the spool t the arm gear smoother and it does not require the frequent oiling that a metal gear would need - Thanks for asking - Dennis

When I disassembled the handle of the reel everything appears to be working, but as soon as I attach the handle with the bolt that u use the wrench with, the drag no longer loosens and tightens properly

That handle is locking the star wheel when you tighten it down it is clamping it in place and preventing it from turning. Either the star adjuster is not on all the way or something is preventing it from turning down. You need to check the drag stack to make sure it is assembled correctly if you cannot get the clearance on the star adjuster
