I can't believe it. I saw Teller reach towards his pocket at a critical moment. The first time I watched this. I have never, ever, caught them doing anything they don't want the audience to see, before. This is also probably the earliest Penn & Teller footage I've ever seen. Great bit. Don't practice sleight of hand this way, that's just a joke. You will slice your hand open.
I think the way they made the blade “disappear” was they put a magnet inside tellers shaving cream spray bottle if you notice he picks something up from the tip after they finish spraying Connans hand, then when pen starts juggling you can see teller taking a knife out of his right pocket and attach the razor blade to the knifes end, then when he begins to cut notice that he takes a deep cut takes out without the razor blade and continues cutting, at least that’s what it looks like to me
Ye, look how carefully teller places the razerblade off his hand to the side, then he pushes the bottle against his hand when he sprays. All he had to do then was push it along the side of the knife as he cut.
When they put the shaving cream on Conan’s hand you can see teller get the razor from the can possibly by a magnet and put in the grapefruit when he starts cutting it open
Lmaoo y’all seem to forget teller is a MASTER of slight of hand. He’s being doing this trick since he was 17 also this was love tv so it’s obviously an easy trick for them to preform. Even the best eyes are slower than the hands.
Penn starts juggling, teller reaches into his pocket and grabs the knife and the razer. He pretends to adjust the knife with his left hand and palms the razer before pretending to adjust the shaving cream and the rag as he hides the razer in the rag. He feels the rag again later to adjust the blades location. While cutting the grapefruit, he feigns that his hands are wet with juice and cleans the knife putting the razer in his right hand again. You can see it pressed against the knife blade with his thumb. Pretending to realign the knife with the original cut, you can see teller stick the razer in there and it almost looks like Conan sees it happen and is fake surprised by the result.
"You can see them in the Rio Hotel and Casino July 20th - August 19th." More like you can see them from July 20th until the heat death of the universe.
1:07 "You usually think of using these to, like, you know..." *gets out his wrist* ...I thought he was going a whooooole different direction just there.
Ok, so Teller obviously lifts the blade from conan's palm as they spray the cream, then places it inside the grapefruit when he goes to wipe it off with the napkin, the juggling and reading of the magic word is all distraction. But I'll be damned if I can see teller actually swipe the blade to start with. Quick bugger.
Watch Teller's right hand. He waits for Penn to spray cream, then starts, the magnets in his can pull the razor blade up. He pulls it off the can with his right hand, then when he uses the knife, the first stab, his thumb is pressing the razor blade against the knife blade. That's how it's moved from Conan's hand to the grapefruit.
No the wiping has nothing to do with it: he always keeps the razor in his right hand and only wipes with the left hand. Instead I'm pretty sure he's holding the razor on the side of the knife with his thumb and he pushes it in when making the first puncture. That's also why he makes it at an angle and then pulls the blade out and cuts the fruit at a different angle, and you can see he's no longer holding the knife with his thumb.
When I was younger I didn't want to learn how magic tricks work because I didn't want them ruined. But now that I've learned something about magic I feel like I have a whole new appreciation for magicians. Even if you know the theory the execution can still completely sell it.
it would have been amazing if they had replaced the razor blade with a blood packet, so when he squeezes, fake blood would have exploded out of his palm xD
Teller is just so casual about planting the blade on the knife, and inserting the blade into the grapefruit with his initial cut. Everything about his body language says he's just performing ordinary innocuous tasks.
Unfortunately, it's a major tell when he initially inserts the knife into the grapefruit to plant the razor blade, wipes the grapefruit to hide his cut a little, and then nonchalantly gives the grapefruit a quarter turn to actually start cutting it in half.
@@disassemblyrequired3438 It's a major tell to someone who knows what they're looking for, but to the vast majority of people it'll just go unnoticed. Of course, it highlights one advantage Penn and Teller have by working as a duo - Penn talking is able to distract from what Teller is doing.
I wouldn't have caught that without you pointing it out. I can't ever figure these tricks out even if they tell me what happened so nice to finally see one for once. :)
You should go see their Vegas show. Penn and teller will wait outside afterward and take photos. Penn IS super tall and, more amazing, Teller will talk to you!
To be honest Penn does look considerably different. For one thing I think he's thinner, but even aside from that he definitely looks significantly older. The other two it's not as noticeable.
+Random Person He's expecting to get his right hand, dude, what's your problem? That's how you shake hands: you present your hand and the other dude shakes it with the exact right hand. But obviously not when he's a razor blade palmed in his hand. Stupid!
I met these Gentlemen in the Fairlawn Hotel in Calcutta in Feb or March 2000. They were delightful. They had been filming the Indian rope trick and wore traditional Raj attire. As I wear a proper uniform when in the tropics, I offered to buy them a drink. The little fella, a charming man, saluted me and bought everyone in the beergarden a drink. My pith helmet was a Korean plastic thing that I had bought in Kanchanaburi for 2 dollars, but these gentlemen had acquired their hats from the BBC, apparently last used by Michael Palin in Ripping Yarns. Happy Days!
Teller had the razor btw his thumb and the knife. He pushed the blade in with his thumb on the initial cut. When he made the next perpendicular cut it pushed the blade into the center. Turning the fruit perpendicular again made the next cut appear to be a fresh cut into the center. Still amazing.
It's because he lost the blood pack Conan was supposed to squeeze for the surprise end. Works better if you just see the act, but that's what you missed.
"This is Halloween gone wrong." Uh, I know, right? What kind of sicko would give out grapefruits on Halloween? I mean, they're only _marginally_ in season at the end of October.
5:05 - notice the thumb position on the blade, then at 5:26 - the first puncture is where the razor will be and the next cut is nowhere near the first stab. I love Penn and Teller so much, and love spending time watching your tricks for practice.
also he but it in half with the second cut starting at 12and going all the way around the clock ion a diff angle then the first puncture...but hes smart and flips it over like completing the half cut but does a full cut
@3:18, Conan professes that he's never felt... all he's doing in this trick is 'holding this - like a complete moron'. Same as his holding on to liberal values.
@4:36 teller takes the blade out of the magnetic can in his right hand @5:28, the first two cuts are just to insert the blade inside the fruit or else those cuts were not required to open the fruit. Also it was at right angle perpendicular to that of what fruit was half cut open.
Penn will be the first one to tell you that Teller is the actual magician of the duo. His entire role is basically to be the distraction/assistant. Now obviously he does tricks himself, but he's said time and time again that when it comes to actual skill, he's a novice compared to Teller.
My take on how they did the trick (spoilers) When teller starts cutting the grapefruit, he hides the razor blade with his thumb on the other side of the knife. He then slides it into the grapefruit as he stabs the grapefruit. Then he re-oriented the grapefruit and cut it in half, making it look like the blade was in there the whole time The juggling and Conan choosing was just a mental distraction. Making the audience think that the blade was already in the fruit
Teller's can has a magnet, the can grabs the razor blade and you can see Teller take it from the can and save it to his right pocket. No matter what grapefruit is chosen, the razor is on Teller's knife (which is also a magnet. The first this Teller does is to stab the grapefruit, inserting the razor blade, then he proceeds to cut the fruit like it should be.
magnet on the shaving cream can removed it from his hand then teller takes it and sticks it to the knife and deposits the razor on the first puncture of the grapefruit then cuts it open to reveal the blade. lol love these guys
I'd say there's a magnet on Teller's shaving cream can which catches the razor blade. He then palms the blade and holds in against the knife blade while making the first cut which inserts the blade into fruit. Then he turna the fruit to make the final cross section which reveals the blade he just inserted.
Magnetic spray can to lift the blade from Conan’s hand. Keep your eye on teller you’ll see him remove it from the can , then keep your eye on him when pen is juggling he presses the the razor flat to the blade of the knife and on the first incision he squeezes the fruit to keep the razor blade in there when he pulls the knife out
The best thing about the great magicians, is even knowing how it’s done you are still amazed at how it is done. You are still captivated by the performance. It is so clean you are amazed at the magic of it all.
I think when he makes the first slice, you can see him push in the razor blade with his thumb 5:27 and then he sort of makes a half-cut. That's him pushing the blade to the middle of the grapefruit. Then he rotates it and starts cutting from a different side. Edit: Also when Penn is juggling, you can see Teller position the blade onto the knife
xD that video quality. I cant even tell if it's grapefruits or softballs xD and those razor blades, they disappear by themselves as soon as the camera zooms out a bit. No magic needed :))
This looks so old, yet Penn and teller still perform all time, Sarah Silverman is hotter now than she ever was and Conan recently renewed his eternal youth by drinking the blood of an intern. Some things change, some things stay the same.
While dude on the left is juggling fruit, you can see dude on the right take out the knife, put the razor along the blades edge and hold it in place with his thumb, then when he cuts into it you can see him push it inside.
When Penn was juggling , Teller took the razor blade and palmed it. When Penn handed the grapefruit to Teller, he put the razor blade into the grapefruit through the partially peeled flesh. The reasoning for all the shaving foam is so Teller could do this and no one would notice the partially peeled flesh of the grapefruit as easily as they would if he didn't have it covered in foam.
