When Paul McCartney listens to "God Only Knows" and gets competitive, this is the result! What a gorgeous, pretty, "clean" song!
Forgive the transition from guitar-heavy covers to a song with barely any guitar on it, but I wanted to highlight this standout piano and bass performance by Paul. There are three pianos on this track - the basic piano track, a "tack" piano, and an additional piano playing some gorgeous layered chords over "Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes." There's also a gated copy of the basic piano track panned to the left, which adds some driving rhythm to the shuffle.
I tried illustrating only the Beatles' playing in the video (as opposed to showing the Midi/VST stuff done on computer), so you only see the actual Beatles' contribution to this song. Paul is on piano and bass, George is probably on guitar, John is probably on tambourine, Ringo on drums (and bongos), and perhaps George Martin plays one of the supplemental pianos. For the orchestral stuff, I included a ton of brass, woodwinds, string, and Mellotron overdubs. I think I used 5 separate VST programs to emulate all the orchestral parts (see below for a comprehensive list). For just a guy and his computer, the end result ain't bad!
For those who want to learn the piano part, I will absolutely post the isolated video of just the piano in the coming days. Don't stress if you can't follow the playing in this video.
Next will come a transition back to the early days, including "I Want To Hold Your Hand." A few surprises are coming soon...
