a lot of MREs sit on the shelf for years before anyone gets their hands on them so their more concerned about shelf life then anything a good bit of what they give you is bearable but not all that appealing like peanut butter and a tortilla not what you're use to but it'll do when you need it hell some have bags of candy like what you'd get out a gas station just have to cross your fingers and hope you get lucky

Having had rations from other nations, more work could be done toward harnessing the psychological component of food. So much focus on "This makes you fight harder because we've dumped a bunch of stuff from GNC in it." and so little on "This provides comfort and a taste of home during stress." The French RCIR is just loaded with comfort food and normal retail products that meet NATO standards, and I don't hear about them getting scurvy. I would've loved to see a lot more hearty stews that didn't just taste like potato starch, canola oil and unseasoned beef.

Gabe S Yeah, only certain kinds(the kind used in poppy seed bread) has enough where such a thing is possible, but you do have to eat a TON to get high. When bringing it up to a friend, he told me about when he tried to get high on them in college. He said he had to eat so many that he got sick from the taste(apparently they don't taste very good on their own), and was miserable through his whole high, which wasn't that good to begin with. Not worth it, which is why they are actually legal. You would be better off planting them I think xD(VERY illegal)

Look at it this way, These guys are eating basically new food in a test environment. Yes, It's going to be good. One of the other posts...When your hungry you will eat these up. Very true. When your hungry enough you'll eat cat food. It doesn't make it any more palatable, it just means you're hungry enough to eat it. Look at Russian Day rations. They put real canned meat in them. And it's good. Now the crackers, well you could use those for inserts in your plate carrier, but the meat is top notch. Why can't we do that? We put a man on the moon ! ! This is a problem that has dated back to World War 2 and was addressed by several General Officers and also by Chesty Puller. The problem is simple. If you take a bunch of guys in Lab Coats and ask them to design a Field ration...You're going to get something that tastes like it came out of a Laboratory or in other words, the current issue MRE. My Solution, Approach the troops who have been sitting in a FOB for 8 months and getting a hot meal 3 times a week and ask them what thy want in a Field ration. Better yet? Ask them to design it. I promise you, you will get a well fed Soldier/Marine. Remember, an Army marches on it's stomach. This was an old adage when Rome fell. You'd think we'd get it by now. Salty? Try those nasty sandwiches they put in the MORE packs. I got nuthin on them when it comes to being salty.

I just got some from the national guard after Ian. Some are okay, some are just..inedible and awful. But the sides and snacks are typically okay/good. We were thankful, and while in the thick of it having a hot meal without wasting any other precious resources like gas or charcoal was invaluable.

It shouldn't cause any harm to your digestion, because having diahrea on a march is kinda awful. Cheese, sausage, sauce they're all not very "neutral" and can cause some troubles.
