They didn't. The sound was recorded in a closet when their studio time fell through. The video was professionally recorded by Fifgen Films - yes, in a kitchen - and the *supplies* cost $400. The completed video, itself, cost much more. There's a writeup by Fifgen out there on a lighting and film blog with behind the scenes photos.
Logically, I know that they are all pretty much equally in terms of skill and talent. But I almost always end up mesmerized watching their bass singer, Avi, trying to see those bass notes come out of his mouth. He looks like he had a blast with this song, which is awesome.
It's a medley/mash-up of 7 Daft Punk songs - they won their first grammy for the arrangement, in 2015. I think you'd like their original song 'Love Again': full-on a capella EDM with a steampunk aesthetic. :)
$400 budget filmed in a kitchen recorded in a closet equals 1 Grammy the Pentatonix way. They've won a Grammy for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. They sang a song using no words for a song with no words and then they won a Grammy for singing a song with no words. Their 3rd Grammy was for their duo with Dolly Parton for Jolene. Bohemian Rhapsody is really good. My most favorite is there cover and updated version of Imagine. Pentatonix does not do covers they do upgrades.. when it comes to Christmas albums Pentatonix owns Christmas. For 2021 the big song was the prayer originally done by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. Off of 2022 is prayers for this world which is just phenomenal. The other group that just did an acapella version of Nothing Else Matters is voiceplay. They knocked it out of the park
I'd definitely recommend their original 'Love Again' - again it's EDM and it's very cool. The Daft Punk medley was recorded in one of their kitchens and the video was shot with a ring light in a closet I believe! They won their first Grammy with this one and they even created a whole new category for them which they have also won again for 'Dance of the sugar plum fairy'. You're right, Mitch and Kirstie look quite different in this one. Mitch lost a lot of weight in the years following this and it made his face shape look different. Kirstie changes her hair colour up a lot andy is looking a bit techno alien in this one anyway with the make-up and blue contacts. The contact lenses hurt their eyes (in particular you can see how red Avi's eyes are!). Kevin couldn't wear them, hence the visor instead!
The group initially came together for the Sing Off (third season), Kirsten Mitch and Scott all knew each other through high school and had auditioned as a trio but the people told them they had to have 5 members minimum so a friend of Scott's recommended Avi as a really good bass and Scott found Kevin from a RU-vid video playing Cello and beatboxing at the same time. They went on to win the Sing Off and got the recording contract and winning money - all of them moved out to California only to get knocked on their butts by Sony who dropped their recording contract saying that they didn't think an acapella group would be very popular. So they started posting videos on RU-vid and this one was made for 400$ in Avi and Kevin's closet and they edited in their kitchen. You might want to check out their Sing Off performances - there are 12 total - but make sure to find the videos with the pre-post introductions and judges commentary. You'll gain an even bigger appreciation after watching those.
a great example of turning a heavily produced, electronic song into a stripped down, vocal only song is Gold by Kiiara. watch about one min of the original then watch how they convert that to voice. its crazy. watching for more. Thanx
Love Again, an original in the same vein as this one with the whole EDM thing going on. Also you might check out Avi Kaplan's solo music. Avi is the bass who left the group in 2017 and began recording in 2019, his solo music is amazing and very different from his work with PTX
They made this video in Avi & Kevin's apartment. It cost them $400.00 and they won their first Grammy for it. Avi is the bass and Kevin is the beatboxer.
Nice reaction. You start to become a Pentaholic, because most of us say "that's my favorite song" after each PTX-Song we've just heared. 😆 I also support the recommandation of "Love Again", it's one of their original songs. It's EDM and it's tailored to their unique voices. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F80FsZDTgn0.html
Oh yeah, I forgot to add if you want to see an original by them, and not a cover, check out Sing. It's awesome and has a lot of fans and celebrities in it and it's just upbeat and fun.
This is an early video and they were very young. Scott was 22, Mitch and Kirstie, two chameleons, were 21, Kevin and Avi were the old men of the band at 24/25. There is a very short video of their acceptance speech for the Grammy you might enjoy. ru-vid.com?search_query=ptx+grammy+speech
Gold, new rules x are you somebody, cheerleader, the prayer, prayers for the world are all tremendously good. Mitch and Kirstie look different every video. They changed the bass singer in 2017 from Avi to Matt. Avi was deeper but Matt more versatile and likeable in my opinion. Avi was great but couldnt handle the rigorous schedule that they still do. 3 Grammys ,millions of albums sold, over 3 billion views on utube ,20 million plus followers. They to me are the best by far. Home Free is good but I like the style of songs better with PTX and they are heads and shoulders above Home Free for awards etc... They also are major players in the Christmas music. They do entire concerts of Christmas Music. They have hundreds of videos. They cover a lot and they also have many great originals. People also want to collaborate with them, They are the real deal.
As others have said, they’ve had only one member change. Avi Kaplan left in 2017 and then Matt Sallee joined as the bass singer. It’s always Mitch, and it’s always Kirstie. For another early, exuberant example, check out Can’t Hold Us, and for a more recent one, Prayers for This World, written by the great Diane Warren and released late last year. I enjoyed your reaction very much. Oh, another recent-ish one that uses a very similar video set-up is their ‘90s Dance Medley. I dare you to not chair boogie! Peace from Ohio …
Loved watching your reactions thru out the song! Glad you are going down the rabbit hole with PTX. You have a new subscriber here. Check out the 90's Dance Medley, I think you will like that as well.
I'd say you will like their original "love again". And for something special you should try "dance of the sugar plum fairy" (a song with no words by a group with no instruments), but I think the video is very hard to put up because of the copyrights (I don't see much reactions to it)
Sony had just dropped them and they didn't have any money. They recorded in the closet and shot in the kitchen. They won their first Grammy with this. This is my 8 year old grandson's favorite song...LOL. To really see what they can do, watch their upgrade of Kiiara's "Gold." Then watch PTX's...live, no set, individual mics, and talent. But really, listen to the original before listening to theirs. You're welcome.
Great review, and here's a little fun fact about this video. Count how many times they blink. There's a few spots where they close their eyes but they don't blink through the whole thing, it's crazy. Probably explains the bloodshot eyes on Avi..lol
Well, You can see the "Recording of Evergreen" to see some of how they do their arrangements and ethic work they all possess, its very impressive what the human voice ita capable to do or recreate. They are masters on this!
now maybe you will add the only all female acapella group founded by members of pentatonix called citizen queen and their cover of killing me softly and get your mind blown by their version AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
With every PTX video, you have to watch the videos several times to catch everything that is happening and who is singing/making sounds-music. Similarly to Home Free videos, there is a lot going on both musically and visually. They are both amazing groups. Thanks for your reaction.
If you like acapella and want to discover something different check out Jared Halley. He is a one man acapella "group". He is a genius. You will love him!
Every time I hear this I think about Dec 2014. Grammy nominees are announced. People are feeling good about their soundtracks or jazz renditions being picked. They decide to check out the competition in the newly renamed instrumental or acappella category. And they find Daft Punk. WTF?
Hi Josh, I've just subscribed as I enjoyed your reactions to 4 videos I've watched you review. I do have a request though : could you turn up the volume ? Your voice comes across fine, but the music needs to be at least twice the present volume. Thanks eh.
Great reaction. I recommend An original of theirs Love Again. It's along these lines. But you need to check out Come Along, 90's Dance Medley and Can't Hold Us. Thanks~
You MUST check out the Acapella group Voiceplay SOON! I recommend their covers of Nothing Else Matters, Hoist The Colours, and Oogie Boogie’s Song. Great reaction btw! New subscriber here!
They recorded this in a closet in the place where Avi and Kevin were living, and filmed it in the kitchen. Their expenses for their first Grammy...$450!
I like your reaction channel, new subscriber. Based on you music taste, I think you'd really enjoy Nightwish Phantom of the Opera (Official Live), an incredible mix of rock and opera. Also Pentatonix 90's Dance Medley is a great feel good bop you'll listen over and over. Keep up the good work!
This was so much fun. You should check out A little space that they did with Ateez. Also check out a group called VoicePlay and their cover of We don’t Talk about Bruno from Encanto .
Can't hear it. I hear you just fine. I will watch anyway since I have heard and saw this one before multiple times. I'll just watch you watching them without audio. LOL
Can you turn up the volume on the video that you’re reacting to? I really enjoy your reactions, but the volume on the video (not your part) is a bit low. I am hard of hearing so I will say it probably doesn’t overly affect most subscribers, but I have my headphones on at top volume and I know these songs well and it’s hard for me to hear. Thanks I appreciate it.
