Leonard Cohen, the guy that wrote the song, heard this rendition shortly before his death and said it was far and away the best version he had heard. This was the guy that wrote the song.
@judithcure2255 Not according to his own words. He said that the Pentatonix version was his favorite. I realize that YOU have your favorite, but he said his favorite was Pentatonix. Maybe you saw a clip from an interview from before they released their version and assumed it was from the day after he died. You would be wrong yet again.
@judithcure2255 They have this wonderful new invention called an internet search engine. Try looking it up for yourself. As a teacher, I never liked doing someone else's homework for them. This is something that you can look up for yourself. I invite you to do so. Whether you accept the truth of what you find is dependent upon how trailer trash you are and how gullible Donnie Dimwit has made you.
There is no evidence Cohen made any comment on PTX's final version. Sadly, he passed just weeks after the video's release. Scott (from PTX) has said Cohen disliked an earlier PTX version that changed some lyrics to be more about Christmas, so PTX then recorded this version. Those who knew Cohen have said he had declined so much before his passing that he would have been unable to make an assessment on this final version. Cohen's praise for the k.d. lang version is well documented.
What you just received was a Mitch slap That's what The pentaholics Call a person's 1st reaction to Mitch And it's totally well deserved cause that boy can sing his ass off I absolutely love this reaction
Their cover of The Prayer is great. Mitch goes even higher as he sings Celine Dion’s part. Scott, the first singer does Andrea Bocelli’s part in Italian. It is beautiful. The album that it is from has been nominated for a Grammy under the best traditional pop album category . It would be their fourth if they win. Please continue with Pentatonix both for their Christmas music and after Christmas. They have 11 years worth of fabulous music! Great reaction💕💕

Hallelujah is not technically a Christmas song. They put of few on each Christmas album. You need to listen to Mary Did You Know, Hark the Herald Angel Sing ,and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Dopamine overload all of them.
In case you think this is somewhat due to studio magic, you should checkout the video of them live performing this song at a Christmas special show they did several years ago. If you want to hear something truly Christmasee, check out their recording of Mary Did You Know.
They are truly talented but live vocals can also be "massaged" to sound better by even a mediocre sound engineer. That said? Almost certain Pentatonix manipulates their live vocals.
I saw Home Free live and that was INCREDIBLE especially feeling the rumble of the seats and building when Tim went sub-woofer!!! A complete experience and great show!
Definitely!! Everything they do is so magical & special but yes it is one of their best as well as The Prayer & I just love Imagin. Thier upgrade of Oh Come All Ye Faithful is sooo good too
Great reaction! Congrats on your first "Mitch-Slap"! We all still get chills from PTX songs after listening to them literally 100's of times. They still bring out emotions in you. You MUST SEE their covers of Imagine, The Prayer and Sound of Silence. Just subbed for more PTX!
I've always believed good music lifts our vibrations. Then there is music that does the opposite. Some types can make us feel sick. I won't name the types because there might be fans out there of that type, but you might know what kind I mean. But THIS kind - yes, definitely raises the vibration in a good way.
Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty")Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on RU-vid, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his RU-vid videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on RU-vid), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on RU-vid, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed next year.
Some small corrections Matt came in late 2017 for their Christmas Show on TV and their Christmas Tour 2017. He was always meant to be at the end the new bass, but they all wanted to test if he fits in as a person (they were sure he fits as a bass). He fits so well that there was no question about at the end. Info is from the Penta Parents Panel 2018 on YT. Greetings from Germany
@@stevensallsorts The only reason I mentioned Kirstie, and NOT Kevin is that him becoming a parent would not (as with most dads) mean a break in working/touring.
You gave me a great laugh. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say, "he started to high" about Mitch's part, and then visible worry he wasn't going to make it.
As mentioned already, The Prayer is amazing and you should check out O Come All Ye Faithful and Mary Did You Know. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, a song with no words, sung by a group with no instruments = Grammy Award winner ; )
BEST MITCH SLAP I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME! That was great friend! See, us Pentaholics love reactors like you because it's almost like us getting to hear these songs for the first time again- the frisson(chills), the disbelief, the Mitch slap, forgetting to breathe, being overwhelmed, all of it! So thank you for this & I hope we'll see more of them from you! (PS: PTX asked to change a few things since this was going on a holiday album but Leonard Cohen said no, & this is the amazing version he approved of, & said was his favorite cover, before he sadly passed.)
I was lucky enough to make a living in music. My mother said I was dancing in front of the radio before I could walk. She became ill a few years back and while in her last days we were talking and she asked me "Why do you think you love music so much?" I didn't know what to say. I thought everyone loved it like I do. But, they don't. They like it, or, enjoy it. Or, it's great up loud when they're drunk type of stuff. I've been binging you all day and it's wonderful to see someone getting the chills like I do. New sub and thanks to you. Good fun
One of the best Mitch-slaps I've seen in a while! 🤣😁 So you have in order of solo: Scott Hoying: Baritone Avi (AH-vee) Kaplan: Super-mega-ultra-WTF-bass Kirstin (or Kirstie, rhymes with thirsty): Soprano probably doesn't really cover it, so I just say Mariah Carey. Mitch Grassi: God, lol. But seriously, as a countertenor, he can take his voice places most women can't. If you ask the group who the best singer is, everyone IMMEDIATELY points to Mitch, no hesitation at all. And then Kevin, who did not have a solo: Main role is beatboxer, but also has a beautiful tenor voice. By leaps and bounds the most multi-talented of the group. I describe him as a cross between Mozart and Michael Winslow.
Every PTX song is an eargasm! That was only the tiniest fraction of what they can do. Check out Carol of the Bells or Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Hearing them do instrumentals is insane..everything they do is amazing.
Pentatonix captivated me a few years ago. Especially Hallelujah and Sound of Silence blew me away. Their interpretations with the arrangements, harmonies, layers - and just their voices, which are sublime in their own way, but also give me chills when combined. Bohemian Rhapsody is also one of the songs they do justice to. I have a long list of songs that I would love for them to tackle, but I'm sure there are many others who feel the same way.
I had the absolute honor of hearing this song live and the experience was indescribable. There are no words in existence that can describe the feeling that hits you. Full body chills, like deep soul chills.
Avi, the bass with the beanie left the group a while back, amicably. Oh, and you’ve just been Mitch slapped (an expression about his insanely high vocals) Kevin, the beatboxer also plays the Cello. Merry Christmas from Australia 🎄🎅🏻
@@CateB66 He played the sax in Carnegie Hall...I think around the time just before the Sing-Off. And if you check out his channel he does amazing loops of cello, keyboard, beatboxing and singing and puts it all together...basically becomes a one man band.
What you need to hear next from them is Mary did you know And amazing grace They are by far too of my favorite songs that they ever done And I see that you done Disturbs version of sounds of silence you really truly honestly need to hear their version of the song
At last! Now I know why we get chills. Dopamine is a beautiful thing my friends. I'm here in June so I'm a bit late to the Christmas party but it's never too late to appreciate our fellow man.
i am eighty years old and i listen to this every day. i do believe it is good for my very old heart because every time i listen i can feel my heart jumping around sorta like getting a jolt of adrenalin or something ...i dont what
I'm a Amiture Writer , "It's Not a Cry that you hear at Night , it's Not someone who's Seen the Light , it's a Cold and it's a Broken•••" I had one of my main hero characters Die with the words to This Song on her lips.
Thank you for explaining the Chills when listening to music! I get them always when listening to their music. They have a way of reaching right into your soul and it is amazing! I get them at the end of The Prayer every single time . . Never fails!
Thank you for a great reaction. I could tell when you were getting excited and your joy in the music is contagious. You made me fall in love with the Pentatonix version of this song all over again.
“ I’ve become a more patient and better person because I’ve been exposed to beautiful things”. You had me right there. First time watcher and I subscribed 👆👆
Thank you so much for the reaction! You are so right about dopamine release, but I have never heard it explicitly mentioned by a reactor. Congratulations :) If you pursue PTX, you will be amazed and delighted by the variety they are capable of. And happy holidays to you too!
I listen to this song multiple times during the Christmas season. And other times of year too! It brings me to tears and I love it so much. My young toddler son watches me singing along and crying. It’s just so beautiful.
Incredible reaction. So many things you encapsulated perfectly. My favorite version with a singular singer is K.D. Lang's version. And the best version of that is not the Olympics but at the Juno awards in Canada. You should check it out sometime.
For more showcasing of their insane capabilities: sound of Silence, Amazing Grace or 90ies dance Medley. And for the protocol: they can pull off their Hallelujah performance live (there is a live video from a Christmas Show, which is even more impressive than the video!)
A large percentage of performers find their nitch and pretty much stick with 'what works for them'. Not happenin' with Pentatonix. Every aspect of their style is unique. From the adaptations of the songs they cover to the choice of background settings in each video, they give you something different every time. I cannot say I like everything they do, but of the things they do that I like, I REALLLLLLLY like!!! They are in a class they have created all by themselves and I wish them nothing but continued success.
Oh friend, you are in for a whole lot of treats with Pentatonix!! The things they can do are extraordinary original, difficult, beautiful!!! Their Christmas catalog is really extensive, but their carreer spans 11 years, so their whole catalog is impressive with amazing covers and originals. I can't wait for you to discover more!!
Their version of Mary did you know is life altering as well. I'm not tremendously religious any more, but the rendition they do of that particular song is very spiritually uplifting, and brings out emotions thought to be dormant or extinct.
When the little guy hits the high notes, it is called being 'Mitch slapped'. The whole group is amazing, and Mitch is in a class all his own. Any one of them could go solo. My fav by these guys is 'Mary did you know?' & I love that Kevin; the percussionist sings more in that one than he usually does & he also has the voice of an angel.
I hope you react to more Pentatonix. They have lots of beautiful Christmas music. They almost always do Hallelujah in concert and it is as good as the video.
Really enjoyed your reaction. Hope you will be reacting to more PTX .It's a 12 year rabbit hole, which means a lot of great music to choose from. Also, Avi Kaplan, the original bass singer, has had a very successful solo career for over 4 years now. His music is also well worth checking out.
Amazing Grace and Can you feel the love tonight by Pentatonix are a cpl more to hit ya in the feels! Awesome reaction!!! I get teary eyed when I watch ppl get emotional with their heavenly voices.
I absolutely LOVE pentatonix!!! I have loved them since the very beginning when they were on the Sing Off in 2011 ❤ they are mind blowing and amazing and they are all such amazing human beings! Just subbed to your channel hoping you keep reacting to them. Their catalog of music is HUGE!!! Thanks!! 😊
