Kevin is also the beat boxer...and cellist...and producer...and writer. He also has a degree from Yale in pre-med and speaks several languages fluently including Mandarin. He is an epic individual and has a heart of gold. ❤
Actually, in their official videos (like this one) Avi (or now, Matt) records a second track with the bass harmony line for his solo, and they layer that in; it just sounds better that way. (Slightly better, anyway.) But in live performances they can't do that, so that's when Scott covers the bass harmony line.
Avi Kaplan (2011-2017)- Basso Profundo also does overtone singing. Plays guitar. Matt Sallee (2017-current)- Bass Scott Hoying- Baritone. But has a 4 octave range. Covers bass when bass is singing lead. Plays piano. Mitch Grassi- Counter Tenor. 6 octave range. He & Kirstie can interchange. Plays piano. Kirstin Maldonado- Mezzo Soprano Kevin "KO" Olusola- Beatboxer, Tenor, Celloboxer. Also plays the saxophone, the piano & some drums. In songs where they want more harmony & less percussion he sings tenor & can go very high, as in this video. They also ALL write. This group is literally like an all star team lol!
If you go back over their cover of 'Sound of Silence' you will clearly see Scott singing the bass line when Matt is singing his part. It's one of the only videos where the camera visually catches Scott singing the bass. Scott's hands animate when he sings, you can pretty much tell what part he is singing by watching his hands. LOL
Heh. One of the reaction videos to "Say Something" has a commenter remarking on how Scott "is a hand-singer" and how he has to white-knuckle the back of the chair he's gripping to prevent himself from doing it there. So watching it always makes me smile, thinking about that.
It's called the PTX wall of sound. It always has a fallback. Their cover of Amazing Grace is another great example of the wall and probably the most spiritual/beautiful song they've ever done.
As others have said Scott is the one doing the bass whenever Avi/Matt sings lead, but there wasn't much bass going on in that first part. Songs where you clearly see Scott take over is Sound of Silence, Hallelujah (especially the live version on their channel), Light in the Hallway, Can You Feel the Love Tonight... and you could always check out his solo cover of "I Should Tell ya Momma on You". The guy has an insane vocal range and while he normally sings baritone, he also covers bass AND tenor parts. :)
Watch the live version of hallelujah. That is what makes them so great, it's because someone else in the group can step up and fill in. Another one to watch live is daft punk!!
Really enjoyed seeing your excitement over PTX. Might I suggest you look into their new album, The Lucky Ones, and choose Coffee in Bed, Never Gonna Smile Again, Side, and my favorite Happy Now.
Yeah! So, with the cards, you see in the beginning Mitch wrote "LGBTQ+" and then handed this to Scott, since they're both LGBT it is something that unites them. So each time a member hands a card over, they are showing something they have in common, making their interpretation more about celebrating our differences and finding common ground than simply "we're all equal" rhetoric :) So Scott hands "man" to Avi, Avi shows Jewish and *then* hands "American" to Kevin, Kevin shows Black, but hands "Christian" to Kirsty :) And then of cause, something that they all share, is humanity, the final message!
@@sp0ngeb00b7 in this case, I'm using "generic" as the opposite of specific. I mean it's not specifically you and me, but every person in the world is included. I know there's a better way to say it, but my brain has decided eloquence is not my forte.
YOU are an absolute JOY to watch..i have been re-watching your reactions and grinning like an idiot the whole way through!!! You have a special light and we are so lucky to have the opportunity to witness it! I LOVE Pentatonix and i would love for you to do more but seriously i do not care what you react to i am here for it all...stay safe and healthy
This is simply the most incredible version of Imagine that I've ever heard. The leads are all great and the harmonies just blow me away. And then, the message they convey via the simple use of the placards is just genius! Loved your reaction, of course.
Everybody has mentioned who covers for Avi, but if you listen again to this song, you will realize that the highest notes are not sung by Kirstin or Mitch, but actually by Kevin (the little obligato during Avi's solo, and for the wall of sound before his solo. Both Kirstin and Mitch have said that he can hit notes above their ranges.
This is very true, and I hope you replay the video to witness Kevin singing the highest notes twice in it! The man is a musical master, despite his humility about his singing voice.
Reminder: defining a person's vocal type isn't simply which notes they can hit (though it starts there), but the quality and voice technique (head, chest, falsetto, etc.) they are using when they hit said notes. This is why Matt is a bass and Scott is a baritone, despite having seemingly identical ranges. Mitch is widely regarded as a countertenor, but Kevin isn't.
Want more? Amazing Grace! I can’t help falling in love with you Dreams Royals 90s medley PTX Originals: Sing Coffee in bed A little Space The Lucky ones Love me when I dont
Have watched this cover of theirs at least 100 times (if not more) and i still tear up...even when just listening to the audio without watching the screen it gets me! You hear so perfect the emotion in their voices that they obviously feel
Scott does bass (blonde, 2nd vocalist) does bass when the bass sings. That crescendo was beautiful. They are doing what they are and what they have in common. What a great message. They are the living message, Black, White, Latina, differing faiths, differing sexual orientations, individually they are strong..together..it's magic! great reaction.
The one thing about all of these wonderful people is that though the may define themselves as Bass, Tenor, baritone, soprano their ranges are each so extensive they can go much higher and lower than what those titles represent.
@@infin8reactions Scotts vocal range is INSANE! He is a baritone, covers the bass when Avi or Matt have a singing lead and Scott hits AMAZING fallsettos! Scott is a vocal chameleon!!
Not only were the signs about them individually, but because they only held signs that applied to them, it meant they only passed the sign when it showed something they had in common with the next person. It's such an elegant way to highlight both our differences *and* our commonalities without actually explaining a word of it. "Imagine" is one of my favorite songs, and with that detail, this video has been one of my favorite by Pentatonix since it came out ❤️
Scott has a phenomenal range and does a mean bass when their bass singer is singing lead. Kevin is actually a tenor with a beautiful falsetto. This will become apparent the more PTX videos you react to. Loving your genuine reactions and obvious enjoyment. Looking forward to more...
Kevin, the beatboxed, is a tenor. The new bass singer is Matt Sallee. A I had started a solo career. He missed his family & friends too much ; with the heavy touring schedule.
Another layer of them passing the cards and revealing themselves is that the always pass on a common trait between the passer and receiver. I’d love to know what Yoko Ono would think of the cover.
@@infin8reactions just so you know Scott takes over the bass when Avi or Matt have a singing lead. Scott is a vocal chameleon! His range is IMPRESSIVE. He is a baritone but flawlessly sings bass and high falsetto. He has a VERY SOULFUL voice and is the KING of riffs and runs.... Kevin the beatboxer has a GORGEOUS tenor voice.
I love this version of Imagine, even more than Lennon’s original. I think he would be so proud of this too. When they go into the “live as one”, I still get major goosebumps ❤
I can see that others have commented about Scott covering Avi as the bass (or Matt, in the more recent songs), but I loved your attempt to narrow it down via process of elimination! It wasn’t a bad process either. Scott just has an incredible range, as do most of them. With the cards, they are showing not only their differences, but also what unites them. You don’t realise exactly how diverse they are until it’s put straight in front of you, and I think it was the perfect way to represent an iconic song like “Imagine.” And that it really doesn’t matter who or what you are, we should all be able to live without hatred. Loving your reactions to these guys! (I may have rewatched some of your other vids a few times, cos they make me smile so much). Keep them coming. I’d like to see your reaction to the Daft Punk medley, and also to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy … where they are literally being the instruments. Both of those won them a Grammy
Others have pointed out that Scott usually takes the bass line when Avi sings lead (Kevin is a high tenor who can't sing bass), but if you listen closely during Avi's lead on this song, there really is not a bass line during Avi's lead.
I think it is so wonderful that five totally different individuals share an equal musical passion and create such breathtaking masterpieces. We are the lucky spectators and the real stars are the songs. Thank you John Lennon. 🤗
Check out their originals, "Sing" "Happy Now" "Can't Sleep Love " "Coffee in Bed" to name a few... a couple great older PTX originals are "Run to You" and "Love Again" they are wildly different styles/genres but both are mind blowing.
Beautiful version with a powerful message. Check out the Beatles “Here comes the Sun” One of the happiest songs ever. Given the current pandemic it’s a breath of fresh air
That's known as the wall of sound when they all come together, PTX do it so well. If you want to see Scott covering bass, you could check out the live performance of Halleljah on their Christmas special, it's amazing.
If I hadn’t been a fan of your reactions before now, just your response to the cards and their messages and meanings would have done it. Thank you for this!
Please, please, please give a reaction to one of their other (faster) songs like their Daft Punk medley, Love Again (original song), or their cover of Can't Hold Us (cover of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis)! Listening to their vocals on slower songs like Imagine or Hallelujah is amazing, but you'll be blown away by some of their other songs where you'd SWEAR there's instrumentation behind them. (Like seriously, how do you do a cappella versions of dance music???)
Love that famous PTX wall of sound. Their cover of Mad World is amazing or would love to see you react to one of their originals. Love Again will blow you away! Or for something totally different their cover of Can't Hold Us. They can literally do anything!
It is easy to get confused as to who sings which part because they all have wicked ranges. For example Scott goes really low in Sound of Silence and Come Along and really high in Thank you and Defying Gravity (superfruit video)
As per previous comments, Kevin is a tenor not a Bass. Scott does the bass when Avi or Matt are singing. If you check out Sound of Silence, you'll hear Scott sing quite low.
Great reaction. Others have explained who covers the bass. It's great to see you got their message so perfectly. You've already gotten 4 of the biggest ones. Now it's time for their first grammy win, and one that is guaranteed to blow your mind completely: their Daft Punk medley. You will stop the video in the first 20-30 seconds trying to figure out WTF is going on. It always happens. But it is shear genius. Which is why they won their first grammy. Then their 90s dance medley.
I also think that when you do Daft Punk, you need to do the triple. There is the official video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3MteSlpxCpo.html. Then there is the live version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vz4CFeWBiEQ.html Then there is the "VIP/NO MIC version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tw4YCsHXKgI.html
When they pas the card to the next member it is what they had in common with each other Mitch (gay) Scott (Men) Avi (american) Kevin (Christian) Kirstin
Love your reactions. Watch Hallelujah live on their Christmas special. You can see Scott singing bass when Avi is singing. Scott has quite a range. As do all the members of PTX.
Their Wall Of Sound is amazing, always so emotional. When they turnover the HUMAN cards they are singing in unison. While most people get along with others very well regardless of differences, it is wonderful to actually see this group live it. I would also say that most of their followers are like minded. The comment section is always positive. Even small amounts of negative are really rare.
It is one of the mostly beautiful song ever written, although I am sure there are many many more, but this one really gets an important point across beautifully. Scott, Mitch and Avi are LGBT. What amazes me about Avi is how he performs other songs that are considered Christian with such gorgeous feeling.
For ballad and 'spiritual'-type stuff, I can recommend 'Amazing Grace,' 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight,' 'When The Party's Over' (a gorgeous Billie Eilish cover,) and 'Mary Did You Know.' For more upbeat ones, there's 'Can't Hold Us,' 'Starships,' and, if you want to hear some of their own, original songs, definitely check out 'Love Again' (if you thought Daft Punk Medley was crazy, this will blow your mind!) 'Coffee in Bed' and 'Happy Now.' Scott and mitch also have a side project together called Superfruit, and it's well worth checking out their stuff too. I can definitely recommend 'Guy.exe,' and parts 1 and 2 of 'Hip-Hop Goes Broadway' to start you off. And Avi's solo work is worth a look too - especially his 'Change On The Rise.'
Fantastic! Amazing. They have so many amazing songs. I say do their evolution of music. It's a live recording of them. It's a bit different than their others so it will be a nice change of pace.
