Thanks for the reaction and info!! The song is from a Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen ( I think that title is correct), so not an original. Great song and as usual, PTX puts all their skills to work making this great rendition.

This is a cover of one of the most famous Broadway songs of all time. If you want to hear PTX originals, I recommend 'I RISE', 'To the River', 'Ref', 'Never Gonna Cry Again', 'Water', 'Invincible', 'On My Way Home', 'New Year's Day', 'Anchor', 'Bored', 'Petals', Coffee In Bed', 'Easy Love', 'You're Out'.

@@j.6133 No problem. The album itself is literally self-titled. So the title of the album is " Pentatonix" released in 2015, and the Single that launched the album was the original song "Can't Sleep Love" A bunch of a bunch of other original music and only a handful of covers. I'm not sure about a second, mostly original music album, but that's what I got for now 🙂

@@haloboy456 The second original album is called 'The Lucky Ones' (2021), and I recommend the deluxe version. Pentatonix members say it's their most personal album to date, you should give it a listen. As for their old self-titled original album from 2015, I recommend you to listen to the track 'To the River' from the Target exclusive version of that album.

It is a cover from dear Evan Hansen. They did awesome job. . For comparison should definitely take few min watch the Ben Platt live performance on I think it was the Oscar’s or Emmy’s. Then get better feel how PTX modified it a little bit sounds so good

So this is NOT an original, this is a song from a very famous Broadway Musical called, "Dear Evan Hansen". They covered this song because it's one of Scott's favorites. Ben Platt is the original singer of this song in the Musical, and in the last couple of years the musical was adapted to a Movie and Ben also played the part and sang it in the Movie.

Yeah, as others have said this song is from the musical Dear Evan Hansen. And as for the piano - it pretty quickly became a bit of a meme in the PTX fandom at the time. "imagine feeling as useless as the piano on the stage with PTX" and stuff like that. haha

So regarding the beatboxing: Back in the day, beatboxers weren't working in studios, they didn't have the assistance of microphones on a regular basis. They rapped on the street, so the beatboxers would create their own artificial echo chambers by cupping their hands. When they DID get up in front of a microphone, they still cupped their hands out of habit and comfort - they were used to doing it, NOT doing it would feel unnatural to them. Nowadays, anyone can work in front of a microphone. Pentatonix found Kevin on RU-vid, in a video he made of himself celloboxing - literally playing a classical piece on a cello while beatboxing - so he couldn't cup his hands even if he wanted to. He went from in front of his own microphone on RU-vid to Pentatonix, THEN on TV a week later to compete on The Sing-Off, wearing body-mics while they danced on stage, winning The Sing-Off, then into the studio with Sony Music, who didn't know what to do with an acapella group, so they dropped Pentatonix, who promptly went onto RU-vid to create music videos of their acapella music, got ridiculously famous as the new benchmark standard of acapella, and what the genre could and would be in the decades to come, win three Grammys for their musical arrangements, and then world tours for the next decade-plus. At no point has Kevin even had the OPPORUNITY to cup his hands to create an echo chamber he's never needed. It's just the evolution of what beatboxing is now, and the ease with which anyone can rock a microphone, even if it's just on their cellphone. The cupped-hand echo chamber was simply a logistical necessity that looked to the audience to be as much a stylistic choice as a sound amplifier. Not seeing it anymore feels a little weird if you're used to that, but it hasn't been a necessity in a long time.

Just saw them in Charlotte. Kevin usually has the mike close to his mouth. They are so dynamic in concert, and do a great job of getting the audience o participate. This is one of my favorite covers. Love Mitch's lower register.

I guess the mouth-cupping was similar to cupping your hands around your mouth to shout--if you don't have any technology to amplify your sound, it's better than nothing, but Kevin I'm sure is well-micced, for better sound and more freedom.

Perhaps instead of calling me names, you can give me some tips for singing? That way, I might learn something from you and you wouldn't be as frustrated when I do sing.😊👍
