In late 1988, talk of skinheads in the New York media was all the talk. There was the WABC-TV piece, then the Geraldo episode where his nose was broken. After the Geraldo show, there was a program called People Are Talking, hosted by Richard Bey, that brought trad skins on to discuss what skinhead culture is. This program features the founders of S.H.A.R.P. We must note that we are talking about the media here. There are going to be stupid questions, and of course the obligatory bonehead that is also invited to the program.

He's so concerned with how they treat "their" women meanwhile the only questions he's asked that woman is about her appearance and if she finds other skinheads attractive as if she doesn't have any substantial contributions to make to the discussion outside of boyfriends and hair. The host needs to be a little more concerned about how he treats women.

The funny thing about that is later on in the show when Richard Bey (the host) takes note of the fact that he hardly asked Lyn any questions.

Of course he had to ask the typical question all media asks of skins (and punks), "Are you still going to be skinheads when you're in your 70s?" It's so difficult for these media talking heads to understand that this isn't a phase this isn't a fad, it's a fucking way of life!! I'm in my 40s and into punk and hardcore since the 80s and I'm still here and still doing it. I may be a little slower in the pit but that's life because this is the life I chose for myself and that is what its all about.

This was actually the beginnings of the Richard Bey show. It started with this, then went to something called 9 Broadcast Plaza, which he hosted with Janet Langhart who is now married to former Sec. of Defense Cohen, and then it became the Richard Bey show.

All they would need to do is show footage from the 70's of Carribean Englishmen and White Englishmen dancing together, wearing the same styles and listening to the same music. Job Done

Of course, but harmony and happiness isn't good for the ratings.

Its a start, but still not that simple. For people with basically no clue as to what skinhead culture really is, theres a lot to be explained. Skinhead culture still the most varied sub culture that's ever been. Making it the most complex. Least this show was one of the first to explain the finer details. By giving a voice to actual real deal skinheads.

@MichaelHansenFUN Not anyone in the scene, especially not back in the day, but when grunge brought punk back into the mainstream Docs came along with it, and the marketplace saw dollar signs.

@MichaelHansenFUN Yeah, this was 1988 and back then you only saw the roughnecks sporting tattoos, especially sleeves. So asking that question wouldn't be much of a surprise. It's funny all the things that are so commonplace now that weren't then. Suburban pre-teen girls wearing pink Doc Martens?

Heard Marcus is still around running his own tattoo shop. Not sure if he still skinhead. Bruce no longer skinhead I heard, and Troy passed more than a few years ago. What I have heard, don't know for sure though.

I wonder if any of these Americans have seen the British film This is England. Watch and see true skinheads black and white.

Put this way mate. I was a 16 yr old skinhead in England, more into hardcore punk at time then ska or even oi music in 1988. Raybeez of the hard-core band Warzone was also a proper non racist American skinhead in NYC. Agnostic Front were originally all non racist skinheads in NYC. American skins like these fellas is what inspired me, and made me realise what proper skinhead culture was about, (where as as good and cool as 80s 2tone loving ska skins were, they did not make it obvious to the mainstream who they really were or what proper traditional skinheads were really about. Not like original American SHARP at the time anyway) .Marcus knew his stuff, well before the age of social media too, and made sure he was following what he knew of proper English skinhead culture. I claimed SHARP for myself when I read a couple of NYC punk zines mentioning SHARP, some English friends of mine had in 88'. These fellas set a very clear and positive example for me at that age. I'd liked the dress style and attitude of skinhead as a young kid and a young teenager. Knew my English step brother was no nazi, or his mates. And he loved 2tone ska the best in early 80s. But never thought to ask him what it was really all about. And had no clue about original 60s 70s skinhead roots thought it was all an 80s thing at the time. For me I reckon the original NYC SHARP did a lot of good for promotion of the non racist side of the more traditional skinhead culture. SHARP spread through Europe by 89 etc. They were far more in line with what we know as traditional skinheads today, than the extreme neo nazi skins at least. Without the original SHARP taking a stand against the mainstream media hype painting skins as all wp nazi back then. And drawing a line tween themselves and WP skins. And shining a light on what it was to be a non racist skin and anti racist skin. I think skinhead might look very different today. Very few trads maybe, and maybe way more hard right winger and WP skins I would think, who knows. All I know is original SHARP was a good thing to happen to skin culture. There had to be a counter balance to Ian Stuarts Blood and Honour from 85'. And SHARP was that. Marcus did not found first NYC chapter til 87' far as I know.
