Dr. Pete led a group of adults with an ASD support group that I attended. I can't tell you how wonderful it was to have someone treat all of us with respect. I remember relating a bad scenario to the group and being so frustrated that I blurted out "If you NT's have all the skills, then why don't you tried adapting to my world". Dr. Pete has repeated my words at several of his conferences and always cited me for those words. It makes me feel good.

This is a good question to keep in mind for conversations amongst analysts. I'm going to keep this in mind. It points to many things like the arbitrary nature of decisions made by clinicians of what is "appropriate" or "socially significant." Thanks for sharing!

So real...thanks for posting this... i think it changes my understanding of the "profession". This is more of a calling... isn't it. (I'm a student analyst in Europe)

Some feel that way! I think it shifts throughout your career. What I think you may be pinpointing is its alignment with personal values and morals.

I think at some point anyone who serves others realizes that we are here simply to serve others. No judgment, no expectations, just acceptance and the goal to be the one that helps them navigate life and have a better quality of life. Some things make our lives more challenging. Some peoples challenging things are noticeable. And just because my things are less noticeable doesn’t make me better, and doesn’t make them worse. I find myself to be a better person around people that are addressing their challenges head-on. When I’m feeling discouraged my husband always says to go see a client Because it is comforting and satisfying to and admire The people that are working so hard. Maybe I didn’t say that very eloquently but the idea is that I admire the people I serve.

That's a great analogy to explain the ideas behind "the rat is always right" quote.
