People Have STOPPED BUYING CARS!

People have stopped buying cars because the cost of ownership is too expensive. Car prices are still pretty high, even though they have been coming down, interest rates are too high for people to afford the monthly payments and even if you can afford both of those once you actually own the car, the cost of insurance maintenance and fuel is also too high. So many people are just holding onto their cars until the wheels fall off.

If your going to fall behind on your payments. Here is one of the best ways to handle it. I always have several credit cards that I dont use. They have interest promotions. Like no interest for 2 years on a balance transfer. Pay off the loan with a low or no interest credit card. The payment will probably be lower and you can get cheaper insurance. If all hell breaks loose and you need to default on that, at least they dont take the car. I did this before and paid off the car in even less time before the interest jacked up. Because there was no interest on the CC everything went to principle.

calculated this once in percentage terms in comparison with my parents. My father was an average earner, my mom did not work at that time. They have 3 kids and rented back then. Out of my Dads wage, 20% of it needed to go to pay the rent every month. Compared to todays prices (average income and rent prices) you have to pay 50% now and can never have wife without work and kids at home.

U.S consumers are NOT smart at all then cry when income begins to suffer. I def live within my means and it allows me days off or leaving work early and not suffering, no extravagant loans or mods to my house or car and i can trim the fat to certain assets if need arises. I don’t understand how people can afford $70,000+ on trucks and cars. I make 150k and after federal, social security and Medicare tax I net $112k then after health insurance, retirement, and other deductions I’m at $92,000. That’s before mortgage, living expenses, and debt obligations. So even at my high income I wouldn’t dare touch a new vehicle. So how can people with 75k income and lower afford these ??

I'd say less than a quarter of the people that drive 70K trucks can actually afford it. The net worth rule says your car shouldn't exceed 5% of your total net worth. NO WAY everyone with a 70K car has a net worth with at least 1.4 MILLION. They are using massive portions of their monthly take home on the payment, insurance, and gas. One job loss or emergency situation and they could be screwed.

The price of new cars has become legalized theft plus the payments $700.00 plus for 84 months plus insurance and in some states the yearly license fees. So many comments saying, "Well, just stop buying" and "Don't buy what you need", which isn't possible for something like a car in the US, the majority of which is highly car-dependent and severely lacking in public transportation. Maybe not buy a car that's a lot more than you can afford, sure, but you can only get away with not having a car AT ALL and still live, work and play independently in only about 5% of this country

Yep - even selling cheap used cars has become difficult. People don't have the cash - they pretend they do, pretend everything is going fine - but they're broke. People who have never been broke before are now broke. Start worrying.. "Buyers" come in to look at vehicles - I don't even bother going out to talk to them lately, I let the other guy go do the blah blah - they ain't gonna buy, they'll have to "Think about it" or some such - these are cheap cars, not ferraris. Nothing wrong with the cars, it's the "buyers" - they ain't got the cash. They want to know can they finance a 2k car - no, nope... so they walk.. They ain't got 2k. They don't even have a grand. They have 200 quid & want to finance the rest. Broke., "Normal People" used want finance on 5k cars - they'd stump up for 1500-2k cars no problem. Now they can't - they want to, but can't. They want to finance them. That's scary. That's "Real World" car-money stuff - what can they pay in cash? Seeing some schmoe roll off in a fully financed 30-60k car is meaningless - that's a loan they ain't paying back, nothing more. Another problem for the Banks. If I was a masochist, I could agree to finance on those 2k cars - take the 200 deposit, let them drive off. They ain't never making the payments, even if it's just 200 a month. No way Hosé. They're buried in just surviving - even if they look all posh. I see it too on the servicing side - big flash cars coming in, owner looking for the bare minimum service - oil & filter, worrying about the cost. Drop the oil - its never been changed since forever - because they couldn't afford to. They're sweating the cost of changing it now, 2 years too late. Those are your REAL economic indicators. People broke. Simple as. No wonder either - cost of living is insane. I know why they're broke - the big boys are robbing them blind with bills & taxes.

Taking my former employer pension and renting out my condo and will live on $2000 VERY comfortably. Made 3 trips there so far to do my due diligence. At 50 years old, I see no reason to continue to work 2000 hours per year (86 entire calendar days/nearly 25% of the year) just to get by until I’m eligible for Social Security, which still won’t be enough for me to retire. One of my top reasons for leaving America is because, due to inflation, I am no longer able to be charitable with my money and time. That will all change September 1.
