+Kendra Bernot Wait, an immigrant is someone who settles in a foreign country permanently. A person born here is not an immigrant because America is not foreign to them. For example, my parents came here from Vietnam, so I have immigrant parent. I, myself am not an immigrant because I was born on American soil.

My great grandad immigrated from Germany just after hitler became chancellor. He moved to Scotland and got a telegram from a nazi saying if he didn't participate in the war alongside the others they would forcefully shot him. He left England and landed in Egypt. He lived in Egypt for 5 years after the war, still in hiding from nazis because the government wouldn't help. After he got the money he left Egypt on a boat and got to South Africa before all his money was gone. He met my great grandma in South Africa and they started dating. She was from New Zealand and she was from rich decent so she took him to New Zealand. He's 97 now and had just gotten his New Zealand citizenship 10 years ago. After living there for almost 50 years.

Being adopted and moved around so much, I never had relatives who could tell me about my ancestry. I didn't have special recipes or items passed down to me. All of my grandparents died and I was never close to my blood family. All I knew was that I was African American of course and that through my grandmother I was a Native American descent from the Blackfoot tribe. I learned through DNA years later that I had Italian and German blood but because we never kept old photos, I never knew my past. So I decided that since I will never know my past, I will just embrace all cultures. And it really is a wonderful experience.

My parents left their country to give my sister and brother and future kids a better life, knowing they wouldn't see their parents for a long time, only a phone call. My dad'sfather past away and didn't get to see him, my mom cries every time she speaks with her parents. The only thing they can do to help is send money and call. Money for their parents to eat well and get medical care. I'm going to visit my grandparents in May, and my gift to my mom is to vlog the entire trip and make a video and burn it on a cd for her to watch. I'm sure she will not only appreciate but love the gesture.

Why are you falling for this Marxist propaganda? 100 years ago America was 90% white european. Nation of immigrants is a slogan used to push more mass immigration for the banking elites and corporations to make them money and to consolidate their power by dividing the populace and pitting them against each other so there is no chance of a united revolution to take the power back from the elites.

I'm currently doing this for an art project and my parents came to the United States in the 90's as refugees from Kurdistan. My parents very narrowly escaped genocide by Saddam Hussien. My father carried his younger sister across the Iraqi border into Turkey and she died in his arms from dehydration. My mother came to the United States without any money or knowledge of the language. She currently suffers from PTSD from the gas bombings and all the deaths she witnessed while making the journey on foot across the border to Turkey. Everything I do in my life now is for them. I am so grateful that they survived and made it here to the US. I am proud of my Kurdish heritage and I am proud of my parents for everything they have done. They suffered in hopes that their children wouldn't have to one day. I can only hope that I can make them proud too someday.

most of us in America are product of immigration, colonization, and slavery and it gets on my nerves when certain people see newer immigrants that are completely different like some Muslims, hispanics, or some body who isn't white like majority of the U.S having the nerve to tell some one to get out so "We can make America great again"

My grandparents on both sides are immigrants :) one from Italy and the other from Dominican Republic. They both came here and worked hard for their "American Dream". I love that they immigrated because it keeps me and my family so close to our roots. I think it's important to know your family's native language and culture. I don't understand how kids now a days have no interest in their family's past and don't speak the language.

I love the comments section. I love seeing people sharing the stories of thier ancestors, and sharing their own. It makes me happy to see people appreciating thier own cultures and each others without arguments or judgement. That is how the world SHOULD be.
