Can't get over how much good stuff is in this song. The bassline, the solo, the groove with those handclaps on the accents, Thomas's vocals and damn just the way it climaxes in the final minute or so. Just amazing.

I don't know I think these bands mostly came out of de-industrializing hellholes amidst grinding poverty, bleakness, and a sense that tomorrow will indeed be far worse... The big difference I find is the UK had much more Empire immigration from the west indies so those sounds would have been more part of the cultural foment that created punk and post punk

Such a weird plea -"Humor me" I don't understand what the song is really about, but that desperate command from the singer, to be allowed to carry on pretending, is so haunting. What truth is he trying to forget?
@monsieurbertillon9570
@monsieurbertillon9570 3 года назад
@Deus Ex Boyfriend IIRC it was the death of a former member of the band, Peter Laughner. David Thomas wrote the song in grief about that event.

@synthmalicious7541 2 года назад
@@monsieurbertillon9570 I’ve always been curious about that though, I get that the idea of a joke comes from his last name being ‘Laughner’ but how does it relate to the rest? Is it that someone is making fun of his death?

@AG-uj1cp 8 лет назад
Nathan Nathan My question for you is, if you knew someone would say it, why come looking for it at all. You seem awfully worked up right now. Take a breather dude it'll be okay. You're looking for ways to validate your own pessimistic views on what you consider "teen culture".

@@ko6el it really is sooooooo good other than that tho lol. not to exaggerate or draw an undue comparison but the song is so good kind of sits in the same category as 'romeo's distress' for me by christian death. where it is probably the best example of the type of song it is that i have ever heard, period. BUT unfortunatly never too interested in hearing Rozz Williams use a slur ironically to prove a point. This song really is incredible and mindblowing early too. its insane how much incredible music has come from ohio ! its hilarious how often i think this
