They actually do add green onions in Bánh mì in Vietnam. They just shred it, then soak in water to remove some of the onion flavor and to give the onion the curly look. Most places outside of Vietnam skip this (maybe that’s why Aaron doesn’t know it, but if he did, he would add it haha). I always add it even when I order from the Banh mi shop here.
I work at a vietnamese restaraunt, and your banh mi is surprisingly different to ours. If you added lemongrass to your pork (which we grill) , it would make a nice improvement in flavor I think. We also use a pate made of pork liver, which adds lots of umami to an otherwise bland mayo. Otherwise, good job on the pickled veggies and great idea to torch the pork!
I love Claire’s enthusiasm, especially when she describes the dishes. Also Aaron has a very nice, calm and soothing voice! Stay safe and I hope you guys have a great week!
3 Crab! I'm American and love cooking Asian foods. I bought my first bottle of fish sauce when I began experimenting with recipes. It was a huge bottle and the smell was off-putting, so I thought, what am I gonna do with all of that? Guess what? It's gone! I'm on bottle number two! I love using fish sauce!
Any fish sauces made from first drip batches such as 3 Crabs are good. They have higher fish umami content, more concentrated. The usual most sold fish sauces such as the Squid brand are the less concentrated 3rd+ drip batches. Still good tho. Just not premium stuff
You did a great job, Aaron! I am Vietnamese, usually, when we pick a place to eat Banh Mi, Pate and butter sauce are what we look for because 2 of them are the main factors to determine if Banh mi is delicious or not. Try to make pate and spread on your Banh Mi Aaron, it will be much tastier!
Can't speak for other people, but my family loves the smelll of nước mắm. It's used in a big chunk of Vietnamese cooking, and is a common dipping sauce for meat and veggies. The smell is very nostalgic to me and reminds me of mom's cooking. Good job on the sandwich, it looks yummy.
When I was in Vietnam for 3 weeks, I had at least one banh mi everyday, either for breakfast, tea, or supper. I like sandwiches, and these were so cheap and easy to get off the street everywhere. You don't get bored easily because you just keep changing what meat gets put into your next sandwich. The next thing I had a lot of was beef pho soup. Thankfully I don't drink coffee, otherwise I'd be broke in no time.
I cooked shrimps using fish sauce and completely forgot to put away the bottle standing on the table in my small kitchen. I entered the room three hours later and the smell was so dense, I could almost cut it with a knife. 🤢. I did not like it very much... 😉 Oh, and I blame Aaron and Claire for introducing me to this terrible stuff!
Did you just refer to Claire as a "hangry bird"? LOL I am dying...that was the funniest thing I've heard all day! Hope she doesn't beat you up too hard for that 😂
@@AaronandClaire I had to rewind to make sure I heard that correctly! Had me laughing too. It's not a bad expression. In Britain a "bird cage" is a car that attracts beautiful girls.
When I lived in Da Nang, these were sold on every street corner. I found them to be a great breakfast option, even if I had no idea half of the ingredients they put in.
Aaron and Claire, I love your channel. May I suggest adding a couple of tablespoons of finely chopped lemongrass to the marinade and your yummy recipe will rise to another level!
GREAT JOB AARON, AS CLAIRE SAID....THE BEST BAHN MI SANDWICH SHE EVER HAD. TRULY YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR CHEF/HOME CHEF WE ALL LOVE TO WATCH AND HEAR ABOUT YOUR COOKING TECHNIQUES AND HOW WONDERFUL CLAIRE THINKS THEY ARE. THX FOR SHARING ANOTHER GREAT RECIPE.
I’ve been binge watching your videos and I saw the fridge magnet from the Philippines 🇵🇭😉 It’s nice to know you have a piece of my country in your home😉 More videos and more food please 🤤
I agree with Claire!!! Love Bahn mi!!! Its been one of my projects over quarantine because I can't get to the shop by my work. I've even been making my own rolls!!!! Waving HELLO to Claire!!!
Lucky Clair, that looks amazing, many bakeries don’t put enough filling in and that totally spoils that experience. Heating up the rolls is a great idea. 😉 Thank you. 🙏
Aaron! Our Asian grocery store doesnt have Daikon raddish? Could you come to Germany to teach them a lesson please? (When you're here, you can also cook for me :D)
Aaron, usually your sense of humor is outstanding, but this video it was amazing. I don’t know what you had for breakfast, but you should have it every time you do a video! 👏👍🤣
I have just learned at some places I can get a banh mi with Thai basil and/or mint instead of the dreaded cilantro. It was the only reason I had never tried this sandwich. And now I know it can be easier to make than I thought. Yay!
i suggest doing the daikon and carrots much finer, almost shredded. it creates a better texture for a sandwich but try them both and see what you prefer!
from a Vietnamese's perspective, he did a really good job with what he had. Korea probably doesn't have everything he wanted to use so he made do with what was available. to be honest, banh mi is like Subway, there are so many variations and ingredients that you can put in banh mi that it is really hard to to a video that is representative of banh mi. love this video
I make the pickled veggies and store them in the fridge so they're always on hand. They are delicious on tuna, chicken salad, you name it - I make variations of banh mi with what I have on hand.
Highly agree! Banh Mi is one of the best sandwiches in the world. I'll surely try your recipe, Aaron. Just from Claire's comment, I can see and hear how legit good this is. I just hope I can get Vietnamese baguettes here. Thanks for sharing this.
Im trying to get into baking my own breads so I think this will be one of the first sandwiches I do. Thanks for the video! Awesome as always and I always learn something.
For some viewers interest: Go to vietnam and eat this. This is really good and it's everywhere. Cheap, customizable, TASTY. Nobody even came close in the west to recreate it properly.
Vietnamese/chinese person here and i have to say that: AH YES THE THREE CRAB BRAND IT IS WONDERFUL. Aaron is doing it right. (I like mine with pate, and the lemongrass tho.)
Omg you always make me laugh in your videos. the part about the red chili’s. 😆That sandwich looks so good and I learned something new today. Rillettes!
