Building a New Fish Pond Series: • Building a NEW FISH PO...
Lyndon offers both fish stock for ponds of any sort as well as stocked pond fishing, fly fishing, and fishing of any sort for kids to adults. You can book corporate events, or a day with the kids. Lyndon will show you how to clean the fish and even rent you a rod and real. Just show up and fish! www.lyndonfishhatcheries.com.
The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episode we had Clarke from Lyndon Trout Ponds and Fish Hatchery measure water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Aeration of the pond is something we will be exploring as we see how the season develops. We are hopeful that water remains cool so dissolved oxygen in the water remains high.
After we dig the pond, we will let is sit for a few weeks before putting our fish in the pond. Ideally you will let the pond sit for a full year, but we are not patient enough for this.

I watch so much content. Joe Robinet, Fowler, Xander Budnick, Greg Ovens, Les Stroud… and more… Plus multiple podcasts and audiobooks throughout the week, movies with the family… I can honestly say that you and Kevin have grown to be my FAVORITE over everything. I noticed how bad your channel took a hit after you took a break for health reasons, but there’s still a lot of us here who’ve been watching consistently for years and years and years. Thanks for sharing your lives with us, Gents.

If you ever install some kind of filter, then the collected fish waste is absolute magic for garden fertiliser. You could make a skimmer setup just like in a pool, but it's a crazy amount of work and requires a ton of adjustments until it works like you want it to. A pond flocculant will help with water clarity and also algae control. An over-stocked pond (any pond with stocking levels above 'natural' density) will require a bit of careful measurement for dosage as it can result in gill stress if over-dosed. If you wanted to "go crazy" with natural filtration, you could run a channel about 30-50 feet long, down a slight slope to the pond and plant it with ranks of reeds set across the channel and a gravel bed. Then you pump water from the bottom of the pond to the top of the channel. As the water flows down the channel back to the pond it is filtered by the reeds and any other water plants in the channel.

Hi, just found your channel and just want to say I love everything I see, so cool to watch you build your own pond from scratch and then put rainbow trout in too, so jealous! It's very normal that unfortunately some fish don't make it in the first days/weeks, unfortunately that's how it is and you have to count on it, but after seeing your fish you're raising now, it proves how well they're doing and that you're taking care the pond is fantastically good, the fish are super shiny and in incredibly good condition, another sign is that the fins have no damage and are incredibly fine, as rainbow trout have incredibly sensitive fins, have some experience as I built a slightly smaller pond with my grandfather for many years ago, but we didn't have anywhere near that many trout hahah :D, keep doing what you're doing and I'll see the framemeot continue on the pond!

I loved the pond project from the start and I enjoy to watch every episode about it. A natural way to filter the pond water is to buy freshwater clams. You can put them in like shopping baskets or other containers with a lot of holes for flow and it really helps. Now, your pond is quite big so I am not sure if it makes sense or how many would you need to actually have visible improvments. But it might be a nice idea to investigate :) . Thank you very much for your videos !

Chris, super jealous of the awesome pond and beautiful trout. Longtime viewer and love the content. For more nutrition or food you could do some spin on aquapoics. I had an aquaponic system connected to my backyard aquaculture tank and was impressed by how the plants converted the fish waste into food and it also filtered the water well.

Ok, i have a water garden and for my plants i either use black milk crates or black flower pots from a nursery. most aquatic plants dont require any soil or very little. think of it like a hydroponic system. soil retains moisture and nutrients. your pond will provide that. most pond suppliers sell net or mesh bags, i simply use mesh laundry bags with a pull string. place your plant in the bag and add lava rocks. they are clean and will trap silt in the small holes that the roots can bind to. pull the draw string around the plant and place it your container of choice. hope that helps or gives you a better idea, oh herrings get wise to fake one unless you move it around on them

I don't want to be a backseat driver, but... (of course there's a but)... I did a similar project and had easier success using empty 2-liter pop bottles. They gave a lot more buoyancy than pool noodles or foam (a lot!), and they were easy to move around the sides in order to balance the planter out. Also, much easier to add or subtract bottles to adjust buoyancy. And, on the aesthetic side, I think you can still drape the geotextile over them and keep them out of sight. (They also last a really, really long time without leaking!) Sorry to butt in. Love your work!

Good work bro❤ personally I would add a water feature like a waterfall this would break up the scum and algie on the surface causing it to sink also it would improve the oxygen in the pond because it will create circulation on the surface. I believe that it's 80 percent of oxygen in water comes from the surface therfore forcing the surface water down and mixing it up will add oxygen to the overall volume, this is essentially what your air pumps are doing but they're not creating enough circulation on the surface to break up the scum. Hope this helps good luck dude❤
@idjtoal
@idjtoal 11 месяцев назад
Waterfall, right, I thought this was the plan, earlier. A pump pushing water to the top of a "stream" full of plants ? It'd basically be an aquaculture setup at that point, take advantage of the excess nitrogen by growing food in the "stream" as well as the regular aquatic / marsh plants.

if I lived nearby, I would love to donate a sand filter and a skimmer. I am in the pool biz, and it would help with clarity, although not very natural. Also, the pump would require regular voltage, so if the property is truly off grid, I am unsure of any options. It would be nice to not have to net the surface, and just let it collect in a skimmer basket and filter.

You guys need a Canadian distributor of your spice. I'd buy it, but no way am I paying customs and import for seasoning.

Will that dye affect the colour of the fish flesh? I've heard of green eggs and ham, but blue smoked trout?????

@TheWoodedBeardsman

It's spring fed, so as long as it keeps raining the pond will fill up from ground water.

Lots of oxygenating pond weed is what eventually sorted out the pure clear pond (after a year + of it being mirror black)

@@TheWoodedBeardsman it was so black 😂 but it really helped clarify the water - gave time for oxygenating plants to grow [under water] I think. I guess there's no quick wins with ponds unless you throw huge filters into the mix (which i'm not spending money on!)

Why Don't you dig a well, really deep & constantly pump cold clean water into your pond????? the trout will love it & algae will not grow as much, use a solar pump to get water from well
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 11 месяцев назад
The well would have to be big enough not to go dry. It would be a challenge.

@@TheWoodedBeardsman you never know you could have a continues under ground stream/river, it could be 30 or 100 feet deep(or more), just a thought, but if you can pump that cold water to your pond the trout would taste amazing
