Our trophy rainbow trout fish are on the way from Lyndon Trout Hatcheries! I meet up with Clarke at Lyndon Trout Pond to pick up a couple hundred trout of various sizes from 6" right up to 5 pounds! Can you help name our trophy fish? After the fish are in the pond, we egg-wash, deep fry in oil and devour super fresh fillets hand delivered by Clarke from the hatchery right at the pond!

Later, we will stock rainbow trout from Lydon Fish Hatcheries with the help of Clarke Rieck. Our goal for this series is to turn an ordinary farm pond into something extraordinary by digging it deeper to help keep the fish cooler, fix any algae issues, add oxygen by way of pumps, solar systems and off grid aeration, and introduce a thriving pond ecosystem including frogs, minnows, tadpoles, crawfish, and insects to help our fish become more natural feeders.
We use a massive excavator to dig out our gravel and shale based trout pond so that we can add hundreds of rainbow trout! If you want a huge trout or fish pond dug or other kinds of excavating please give Trevor a call at Trevor Smydo Excavating: trevorsmydo@sympatico.ca 519-571-8668
Lyndon offers both fish stock for ponds of any sort as well as stocked pond fishing, fly fishing, and fishing of any sort for kids to adults. You can book corporate events, or a day with the kids. Lyndon will show you how to clean the fish and even rent you a rod and real. Just show up and fish! www.lyndonfishhatcheries.com.
Facebook: / lyndonfishingpond
The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episode we had Clarke from Lyndon Trout Ponds and Fish Hatchery measure water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Our plan to excavate the remainder of the pond, pushing the size out to about a half acre in size and a water depth of around 8 feet. 15 feet is more ideal, but our base is shale and therefore can not be dug any deeper.
A trout pond is very difficult to establish, but it is very possible to do correctly if you know what the fish need.
Aeration of the pond is something we will be exploring as we see how the season develops. We are hopeful that water remains cool so dissolved oxygen in the water remains high.
After we dig the pond, we will let is sit for a few weeks before putting our fish in the pond. Ideally you will let the pond sit for a full year, but we are not patient enough for this.

Cool ecosystem. In the late 1930s in Arkansas, my great Aunt and Uncle who owned a small dairy started 2 projects like yours. The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission had a catcher program. They stocked with crappie, bass and bluegill brim. It is two warm there for trout. But almost 100 years later my brother lives on this property and still maintains the fish population. I know in years to come your family will come to enjoy the fish of your labour all the while maintaining a really rad ecosystem/ ☮️❤️🎸

They say on Gov research that usually about 300 fish per acre. That depends though. An Aerator and Koenders water treatment is what I recommend. If you have an overflow from a well going into the pond that helps big time too. Keep in mind rainbow trout in a pond won’t breed unless you have lots of movement of water. Brook trout will though if conditions are adequate. Springs in the pond help massively too. The aerator will oxygenate the pond. And keep the water clear and clean + healthy even for swimming.
@Mjones8383
@Mjones8383 5 лет назад
Clear water don't mean healthy water for fish. Remember algae blooms feed the phytoplankton which feed small fish and bugs which feed the bigger fish. Super clear water also causes massive weed and grass growth which during the day give some oxygen but at night take more 02 than they give in the day. Stained water is me beneficial to a healthy ecosystem.

A good natural habitat you can put in the pond is left over Christmas trees. Also if you clean any brush from your property just drop it in various spots and you will notice the fish are attracted to structure and will really enjoy it especially since you have a gravel bottom pond. Good luck with this pond and hope to see more videos about it!

With all the gravel you have there, you have a good shot at a strong crayfish habitat. Would be great food for your troutzilla. Only the big trout can manage to down a crayfish, but once big enough they love to eat them. In addition you may want to introduce a minnow population... the most important thing you can do is to research how to creat habitats that attract Midges and Mayflies. Small Rainbows eat mostly flying insects in the wild, then add minnows and crayfish when they get bigger.

Sinking a tree or two in an area you don't plan to swim or fish in will give the smaller fish a natural hang out. The algae will be a good thing later on if you leave enough fish to spawn, The fry will use it as a hide out and a bit of a free nursery/restaurant. Nice pond and I hope the Bass give your Trout a chance.
