+John Mark Well, I just think there's no such thing as the "greatest drummer in the world..." My current 'top 5' list (changes ).... Jo Jo Mayer, Gerald Heyward, Adam Deitch, Sput, Chris Coleman... but soo many others as well... Fun stuff...
@gustafsone

Sput is amazing and most definitely one of the best current drummers, but there are so many others that are just as good. I don't even know if I could even pick a "best" drummer right now. I could name someone, then if asked the same question again a few hours later, it would probably give a different answer. A good example of this is if you look at Snarky Puppy alone. You have Sput at the helm for many of the records and tours, and he is phenomenal. Then you have Larnell Lewis on a couple of the other records and tours and he, too, is a phenomenal drummer. I'd have to say that whichever one I happen to be listening to at the time would be my favorite. They are on equal footing, in my opinion. Of course, then there is everyone else out there, some of which are just as good as Sput and Larnell. It's a good time for music. It's out there, you just have to find it. In the last 2 years alone, I've discovered more new music and musicians that I love than in the last 30 years of my life, and my record collection isn't small, either!

I've never seen a drummer tilt their crash cymbal away from them like Sput does here. I think I understand why he does it. If it's tilted away like in this video, then you're going to hit the cymbal consistently at the same angle each time. Does that mean I would like my crash cymbal positioned that way? Nope.

Teach them to play ambidextrously. Open handed always. Left and on hi hat, right on the ride on the right side. Make it so they never have to cross their arms. It makes the body naturally more relaxed being open handed always. Mike Johnston said the same that that is the way to go if your serious and just starting out. It's gonna be a lil harder for a while but the pay off will be well worth it if they're patient.
@nathans4957

@larrytate1657
@larrytate1657 9 лет назад
Open handed is actually a more relaxed less stressed way to play if anything as opposed to crossing over. Crossing over also puts tension on your right shoulder. But hey drums are hard enough so if u dont have time to learn your syncopated cascara patterns and what not with your left hand it's understandable.

Jardy Rodger Was it his playing that lost you or was it the odd time? Or both? Personally speaking, a lot of times it's the odd meter that a band is playing rather than what the drummer is playing. If the time signature is very complicated, like a measure of 11/16 followed by a measure of 15/8 over & over, then I can get lost no matter what the drummer plays. And if I still can't find where "1" is after listening to it a dozen times then I tend to get frustrated. I don't think this tune is one of those examples though. I don't know why a band would want to write something so mathematical to the point that it doesn't groove anymore. I like odd time signatures but it has to make sense musically. That's just my opinion.

It is all subjective really... i am more of a fan of larnell lewis' driving groove, and i feel he has more energy when he played with SP, but i think Sput has much better chemistry with the group and just cant be replaced in SP. So in different scenarios it is difficult to say one is better then the other.
