Another great video! Some of these “controlled” studies are hilarious.. fish oil?? I think the result will be more interesting if compared to better placebos. Maybe unscented or clean musk, or other popular floral scents. I don’t think fish oil is even a pleasant smell for most people!😆
I love and appreciate both your interest in the science behind fragrance and also your desire for inclusivity. Your values make you stand out from the crowd and draw me in time after time. Thank you!
@@dr.claire.perfume I mean it as a highest compliment. Fragrance is generally such a trivial, silly, inconsequential topic… yet how we approach it can be so meaningful. Being cognizant of societal inequities, biases, and prejudices while exploring this topic (and others) is so important. You are helping to vocalize the change we need 😊
@@laurenzieger9617 yes I totally agree. Change is needed. I remember when I first started, I didn't really realise how much of the language of how fragrance is talked about is problematic but as I started watching more videos and trying to describe fragrances, it made me realise there was a lot I wanted to avoid...
Yes, not upsetting RU-vid. Indoors are everywhere to be fair, faeces, breath, sweat... We are indole factories, bit different ones smell more or less attractive. 🙂
I did not suspect grapefruit or orange to be among "attractive" notes. 😊 But I can understand the reasons behind it. 😊 I always knew that men love sweet perfumes. 😊 You don't need science to know that one. 😊
I decided to wear Moschino Cheap & Chic I Love Love after watching this video. I'll report back 😄😆 Thank you for all the time and research you do for all your videos, Claire 🥰🥰 See you in the next one 🙋🏻♀️😘
yes thats what i always tell men and women but especially women, just wear what u want or like the most just dont over do it cause too much of something is always a bad thing, in general not just perfumes!! i love n appreciate all the infos and effort u put in ur videos, u cracked me up when u showed elon musks face up there haha.. awesome!
My date night fragrances are Diesel Loverdose Red kiss, and Scandal by Night ( you mentioned that your husband loves) . I think i would have good luck with a fragrance that smelled like cookies or cake too❤😊 as my husband loves sweet foods. ❤ I like lime and spicy, probably cinnamon? On my husband. And i think reminds me of Old Spice, which is comforting ❤
Yes, I think sweet ones can do well. I think my husband actually doesn't remember from one fragrance to another anything he's previously said 😂 I've learnt over repeated tests! The fragrance that gets me compliments from strangers is Montale Intense Cafe. I would never have expected that! 🥰
I wonder if grapefruit is dose dependent. If one spritz makes me appear 6 years younger, will five spritzes make me appear 30 years younger? Also, I think we should drink a shot every time you say "penile blood flow". Cheers!
Yes, that should have been the drinking game for this video for sure! Well I'm hoping in the years to come that the grapefruit IS dose dependent 🤞 thanks for watching ❤️
Apparently I needed this video. I was wearing one of my favorite "sexy" fragrances the other day and my husband walked in and said "it smells like my grandma in here". 😂
OMG ! Can totally relate 🤣 I loooooove my deep , indolic, white florals like Jasmine and Tuberose… or like dense Rose scents…. and my husband tooooootally hates them 🙄🤭
Hi Claire! Pink Grapefruit wow! I didn’t expect one of my favorite notes to be up there! Such a fun and educational video! Thanks for sharing your expertise and your passion for perfumes…. And you funny side! ❤️❤️❤️
Dear Claire, i will bake some pumpkin pie, while wearing a lavender fragrance (maybe mon guerlain), and serving in the same plate some fresh peeled oranges!! Oh my, this was fun
Your pictures you show while you are speaking is very witty and amusing to me. I appreciate your many efforts you’ve included in this video and others. Thank you for what you do.
Hi Claire darling! 🤗 This is a great topic! ❤️ I can believe that about Lily-of-the-Valley! It's one of my favorite floral notes as well. 😊 Of course musk is a must as I always say for this very reason! It's a very attractive notes! I also adore Jasmine! 🤩 I guess I kind of instinctually picked up on the attractiveness of those notes. I would throw Tuberose in this list too, where there are studies or not I know that men love tuberose. 😊
Well tuberose is heavily indolic too I think so it should be thrown in with jasmine... LOTV was a shock to me. I am unsure how sound that research is, the controls were poor. It makes sense that a lot of these notes are extremely popular I guess?!
Yesss, another great science-related video from You, I've really waited for this! Thank you ❤ Also, the photos and the gifs were hilarious in the background.🤣 So, at least we know that lily-of-the valley is the real Holy Grail flower, I'd have never thought that. Pumpkin + lavender, hmm sounds interesting. Maybe I should wear my ELDO Tilda Swinton Like this perfume mixed with f.e. Twilight by Lush. Sometimes men are really-really weird...😂but maybe women as well. I've read a study lately how much women attrack to the heavily sweated t-shirts of their own male relatives (mostly father/brother). As first of all women are able the choose blindly the exact t-shirt of that man (from many others)...Oh I love chemistry, it's such fun😂
Those t shirt studies are fascinating aren't they?! I would love to have a go at one of those studies, I want to know if the choice is conscious or unconscious. How aware are people of having an active preference? I was also surprised by LOTV. It's a strange choice. LOL you did better than me finding a pumpkin pie / lavender combo 🤣 Thanks for watching again! 🥰
@@dr.claire.perfume Thank You for the funny yet interesting content. I've laughed so much 😁One thing is for sure: I'll spend the rest of my life literally "bathing" in various pink grapefruit scents 🤣
I discovered your channel through another RU-vid fragrance review creator and I love your quirky and fascinating videos!🥰I’m a geek sometimes and like to learn about unique things , so this is very entertaining for me. Nice job and keep them coming 🙌👌
Hello Claire! I love THIS approach of fragrances that make you attractive 😉. I guess I’m not the average guy as vanilla and jasmine will definitely not enhance any flow whatsoever. I have also heard that mandarin as a note can make you appear younger 😉. Thanks so much for the excellent scentence (scent and science)!
🤣 thanks for the information! I don't think there's an average guy for sure! Preferences are informed by scent memory and cultural exposure, I bet all of these studies were very White European based, science is sadly behind the times there too... You know what? I love mandarin, so soft but bright and cheery! Thanks for watching Andreas ❤️
Hi Claire, I'm watching your intro and wondering if you've made a video about the effects of storage conditions on perfume. i.e. What happens if it's too humid, hot, sunny, etc.? Might make for interesting research for you, and benefit collectors or newbies who don't know it matters. And if any part of ideal storage is bunk, that'd be interesting, too.
This was a very interesting video 😊 I have to say vanilla perhaps doesn't work on me tho it would explain why I eat so many biscuits maybe 😜 Lily of the Valley does smell very good, I'll have to wear more
I'm so glad you got so much from this 😉 I agree, I wouldn't put you as a vanilla lover, you often say it's boring 😂 but yes, I bet you would need security if you wore a lot of LOTV, you have so many fans as it is. Be careful with all that power.
I really appreciated your disclaimers. I tend to choose scents that I feel good in, that also suit my personality and style. Some of those are sexy fragrances and if my husband finds them sexy, then it's a bonus. But I have never chosen a perfume to attract a male. Perfumes make me feel more beautiful, or boost my mood or calm me down ❤ This was an excellent video, so interesting, thanks Claire ❤ The penile blood flow bit, hehehe! 🤣
Yes, I think those sexy fragrance videos are generally a load of rubbish. Just wear what you enjoy. But yeah I enjoyed looking at the super weird studies 🤣
@@ems_h.eartnotes I know! It shocks me how they can get funding for that but for me investigating genetics of enamel defects it was very much a no when I asked for any money 🤣
@@dr.claire.perfume what really? That would have been so helpful too! Enamel as in tooth enamel right? Oh yeah I forgot, UK health authorities don't appear to care about dental health hence 1000s pulling out their own teeth and their kids teeth cuz no access to affordable treatment
Hello Claire! Science is definitely lagging in so many areas so it’s good to know you are using your talents to nudge it along. Some of these studies blew my mind. I have no idea what motivates some of these scientists but penile blood flow is a bit much. Notes for me would be chypre and aldehydes. I love learning so thanks for continuing to tap into my inquisitive side.
🤣 yes Alan Hirsch always takes stuff somewhere no one wants to go 🤣 Yes chypres also make me feel confident! I love a good rose chypre, those definitely make me feel attractive. I am getting more into aldehydes, I love when they make stuff a bit fizzy or sunshiney, it's so uplifting! Thanks for watching my very strange video 😆
This is fun and interesting. The rose and fish study lol 😂😂😂Interesting, rose oil help with lowering inhibition! Always learning something new from you 🥰
Hello friend, I'm sorry, just now I had time to watch , I have been very very busy lately, oh my Goodness, I loved to hear, see and to learn. So interesting that my favourite floral note is Lily of the Valley, indeed it is uplifting, and now I know why I always found it sensuous, it resembles a bit of a male secretion. My favourite Lily of the Valley Scent is Diorissimo and Quelques Fleurs l'Original, where the Lily of the Valley is very prominent. My respect to you beautiful and very intelligent Doctor🌸💎🌸
Thank you for watching! No worries when! I have also been very busy this week. Yes I was quite shocked by lily of the valley really. It's quite an old school, vintage fragrance note, but I guess it is striking.
I'm not even a big fan of musk to he honest (either one😂) but I thoroughly enjoyed your musk video! So informative! I recently did a deep dive into learning about indolic scents and why we are attracted to them. My favorite scents are the ones that almost smell bad but dont. Lol. Why are they studying penile blood flow!? So funny😂 They need to study womans anatomy more and scents that woman would like on men. I'm going to do my own study! My husband doesnt care for any of my fragrances. So I'll try some lavender and apple pie see what he thinks😂
Yes me too! That's why I love Gucci bloom nettare Di Fiori, so on the edge of something I don't like... No idea on the blood flow, only thing I know is that it's a bit weird... And I wonder who funded it. 🤣 Yes snap, my husband is not a lover of any particular fragrance, he has ones he dislikes and ones he sometimes says he prefers but it doesn't go any further than that...
Oh my goodness! 😂😂😂 All of these studies seem right on point, nevermind if they are flimsy in design. Isn't it amazing how scent connects to primal instincts?! I can neither confirm nor deny that these studies match my observations. 🤣
Super fun video, guao!!! I think the pumpkin pie reference goes back to the vanilla memory (home 🏡 and 🎂) and lavender is sooooo relaxing ) maybe yes! 1 spray of pumpkin something and 1 spray of lavender perfume! Hahahhaa! Love love your science series!!!!
Thank you! You could be right about the pumpkin pie, I definitely think it's a comfort, safe thing. The combination definitely requires some very ingenious layering 🤣
So I love rose, Jasmin and vanilla 🧐 looks like I’m heading for more attractiveness 😜 Oh yea I also love musk. This was a fun video doc, thanks for sharing 🥰
Excellent content as always Dr. Smith! Jessica McClintock is an excellent Lilly of the Valley dominant perfume. It smells a lot like Diorissimo at a fraction of the price.
Thank you! ❤️ That's a fab tip! I'm not sure I love lily of the valley so much as to buy Diorissimo, but I would love something that lasts longer than the Yardley.
Yes I think there's a split with some absolutely loving it and others finding it too strong. I think on the whole Alien is a very attractive perfume to men but I clearly need to do some study to back that up 🤣
The reasons I love your videos are many. However, this particular video reminds me that your editing shows such a fun loving faucet of yourself. Also, when you had to “cut” after telling the sperm fact hahaha! I would’ve done the same thing 🤣
That sniff research / study with sniffing rose oil is really interesting! 😃 I love Vanilla, Rose, and citruses, and I notice that fragrances that I get compliments on have those notes… i am loving musk lately… currently wearing The Musc from Essential Parfums .. 🤍
That's really interesting, my three most complimented this year have all had rose. I don't think I wear a lot of vanilla, but I bet if I did, that would be the most complimented. Musk is super special for sure!
Love this video of yours. Well, fragrances are science... science of developing new smells, scents and obviously a lot of study needs to be done into this industry. Love your approach and idea when it comes to this video, finding it very unique. 💗💗💗💗💗💗
Thank you ❤️ I do quite a bit of perfume science content, some slightly more serious than this video 😉 I love combining my interests. Thanks for watching 😘
Informative and fun 👍😅 love your science videos, Claire 🤗 I haven't thought, Lily of the Valey would be so attractive to men 🤭 The note of orange is uplifting and make you feel happy 😀 Un Jardin sur le Nil was on my wishlist, now there is one more reason to buy it 😆
Me neither, LOTV was a total shock to me! The controls for those studies were not fab though, there needs to be more replication. Oh I love orange too! So bright! 😎 Thanks for watching 😘
Very cool video. I thought of a layout h combo for pumpkin pie & lavender. Like That (pumpkin) Mon Guerlain (lavender). I am definitely going to try it out. Not only on men but I think it will smell good too.
Hello! Interesting! Please let me know whether you think it smells good when you try it 😊 I will look up Like That as I haven't heard of it, and thank you for watching! ❤️
i know pumpkin pie isnt really too much of a thing over there, so id like to say that pumpkin pie doesnt really smell like pumpkin too much. mostly smells like sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and a liiiittle bit creamy. these in combination with lavender make some sense. if they sell pumpkin spice lattes over there, it pretty much smells exactly like that. the flavor is meant to mimic the spices of pumpkin pie.
Yeah, we don't really eat pumpkin at all. Squash yes, because it's sweeter and nicer, but only in savoury dishes. I don't think I've ever had a pumpkin spice latte. I had a whole Starbucks coffee with those syrups once and I felt sick all day. It was unbelievably sweet. 😂
Yes, LOTV shocked me too. It's not one of my favourites and definitely something I have to be in the mood for. And yeah, we all know everyone loves vanilla!
I believe Anthony Bridgerton really appreciate pslily of the valley on Kate! 🤣 Let me watch again! 😆 I’ll have to check but I think L’air du Temps by Ninia Ricci is mostly lili of the valley and it was not an attractive perfume to my nose… 😬 ok back to the video! 😉
Same Julie, lily of the valley sometimes feels too vintage for me. I have to be in the mood for it. And I watched one episode of the first series of Bridgerton and I have to say it didn't click 🤣 I think I need to have another go cos it's all people talk about! 🤣
I think these are quite general notes in the main aren't they, apart form the final, stranger study. I think my dad likes florals too, he likes light airy ones. He's not a fan of anything heavy.
Actually there’s a sweet perfume with pumpkin, and it is called True Star Gold from Tommy Hilfiger, I think it would be nice layered with Yardley’s English Lavender, there’s also Demeter Pumpkin Pie 😅
That's really interesting! I think a lot of traditional beliefs can have some root in something that can be scientifically relevant. Like ancient people here chewing willow bark for tooth ache because of the aspirin content!
... however, floral (tuberose, rose, etc make me feel femme), nystery: I do aouds :) cozy lovey for cold weather: all gourmands, scorching 🏜 heat: fresh ones or fruity fresh :)
White florals are not something I wear often so they do feel very special. And yes, ouds are really cosy. I'm currently in summer mode though and I've been loving some fresh rose fragrances this weekend. Thanks for watching again!
Ahh, yes I could have found a lavender fragrance I think but I wasn't so sure about pumpkin pie 🤣 I have no idea how that tastes, the study was clearly North American!
Ooh thanks for the suggestion! I have and love 4711 original Eau de cologne but I've not tried AA orange basilic, only AA orange soleia (the one I suggest), I picked that cos the studies identified fresh oranges and orange juice as the "attractive" note. Is orange basilic a zesty fresh orange like orange juice? For me, 4711 isn't as sweet and juicy as orange juice, it's more herbal and lemony, do you perhaps mean one of the 4711 flankers? I've not tried those... Thanks for watching ❤️
@@dr.claire.perfume Hi, Claire! So I'm speaking specifically of 4711 Acqua Colonia Blood Orange and Basil, which was suggested to me as an alternative to Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Mandarine Basillic, which is expensive and hard to find. If you've ever smelled the Guerlain it is IDENTICAL to the 4711 Blood Orange except the 4711 somehow sits fresher for longer (I find the Guerlain gets a little soapy in the drydown). I own both since I tend not to trust "alternatives" that are cheaper but the 4711 is somehow better. It is not what I would call a herby citrus (not exactly sure what that would smell like but I'm imagining the Jardin series from Hermes), just an incredibly fresh citrusy citrus! The basil adds sparkle and freshness, not earthiness or herbiness to it. I'm doing a terrible job describing it, but just imagine drinking freshly squeezed orange juice in a garden. It is a very similar sweet citrus to the Guerlain AA line. Highly recommended and it's cheap enough that if you hate it you basically spent on it what you would have spent on a meal out.
@@piginspandex oh thank you! that does sound beautiful actually and I am forever looking for fab citrus fragrances and I really rate 4711 generally for their price point so I will try to find it and check it out 😍 thank you! ❤️
@@dr.claire.perfume On smallflower (which I think is German so likely ships to the UK) they sell a little sample pack with 5 travel sized colonias, including the blood orange. Honestly it was by the best one of the pack but if you’re like me (a fellow scientist who is insanely curious and wants to try it all!) that’s a good place to start. They are not too small so it will last a long time, making it a great value.
Musk always has me on my hot girl shit lol KP Indi has been my musky fave these past few months. When my sister first smelt it, she inhaled deeply and said "this... smells like a woman" lmao facts amirite
If you mean lilial, that is found naturally in chamomile but is generally lab synthesised for fragrance and cosmetics. the EU banned it in March because they found links with infertility, however the studies involved feeding rats with lilial, which doesn't reflect its use as a cosmetic. Other aromachamicals can mimic lily of the valley but a few have already been banned. It seems like a bit of a difficult note! Thanks for watching and for your interesting question!
@@dr.claire.perfume yea I was reading article that that how is said is a main reason why lots of perfumes been reformulated I mean I’ve already had enough kids I’m good here yep .
Those are really strange combinations🤔. Sound like fat and high Men with munchies cravings😸 But I love my sweet and gourmand scents regardless to what float Men's boat
Yes, the notes that they identified are totally nuts really. If you read the study they only gave then seemingly very odd combinations and choices. It is almost like they were aiming to get some click bait results... Me too, I wear a lot of liquorice and that's for me, not for anyone else.
I think so! 🤣 Yes women are supposed to have an enhanced sense of smell because of the need to respond to the need of babies and its importance in mate choice.
